Holly Golightly and The Brokeoffs @ Hi Dive, Denver CO, 2010-04-27

First and only time I have seen Holly Golightly.  If your unfamiliar she came up during the 90s in the UK through an association with Thee Headcoats and Billy Childish.  Some of her stuff is more garage rock but she has a ton of releases so it is all over the place.  

This show featured her more country side  project The Brokeoffs with her long time partner Dave Drake.  Holly doesn't tour much but the recorded output is impressive.  There are 10 Brokeoffs albums.

Holly and Dave are full of good stories and banter through out the set.  The thread about not being welcome back in Utah is amusing.  Lots of fantastic songs from across the catalog,

Crowd is a bit chatty on this Wednesday night but not intrusively.  Fun listen.  Enjoy.

Messer Chups @ Streets Of London, Denver CO, 2018-10-16

Messer Chups is an interesting group.  An experimental, slightly jazzy, surf rock band from St Petersburg Russia.  Led by Oleg Gitarkin they been putting out albums under this moniker since 1999 when it began as a spin-off of his other band Messer für Frau Müller.  

Those Messer für Frau Müller albums going back to 1991 and the early Messer Chups albums have a lot of samples and fit more into the experimental category than later Messer Chups releases which are more straight ahead surf rock.  A friend turned me onto them around 2015 and I saw them live at the Tiki Oasis fest in 2016.  Been hooked ever since.

This was the 2nd of two shows that they played at Streets of London, now just Streets, back in 2018.  I had tickets for both but blew off the first night.  I regret that a little bit now.  I believe that these were their first ever Denver appearances.

If you dig this hit up their band camp pages and grab one of their many releases.  Keep supporting independent music, artists, and venues anyway you can these days. Eventually we will get through this current pandemic and will be ready to rock live and in person once again.

John Doe & The Sadies @ Lion's Lair, Denver CO, 2009-07-28

This was a fun one.  John Doe fronting a band comprised of The Sadies.  John Doe is from X of course and if your not familiar with The Sadies they are a long running Canadian rock/county band started by the Good brothers in 1994.  They have a big catalog that is worth exploring.

In 2009 they put out an album called Country Club that features a ton of cover songs from known and not so known country artists.  Good stuff.

At this show they played many of those tracks and did some X, John Doe solo, and Sadies songs too.

The Lion's Lair is tiny and recordings from their can features plenty of bar room atmosphere but this is mostly free from that.  You hear the occasional bottle clinking and some crowd chatter but during the music I think this sounds fantastic.  I wish I could remember where I setup my mics for this.

Built To Spill @ Fox & Ogden, Boulder & Denver CO, 2001-06-08&09

 

In the 90s and early aughts bands coming through Colorado would often play Denver and Boulder. With an additional stops in Ft Collins or Colorado Springs many times for a nice run of shows through the state.  Great for the bands too since Colorado is pretty far from the next big concert markets, 8 to 10 hours in any direction, they could do extra shows to make up for the long distances.

Now they have proximity clauses in the music business that prevent bands from doing runs of shows like that.  It's kind of a bummer.  I caught so many fun 2 or 3 night runs of my favorite bands at the time.  

I guess I shouldn't be complaining too much with no one touring at the moment. Bands are still out there making art though.  So go and support independent music anyway you can these days.  

Here is a set of Boulder then Denver shows from Built To Spill back in June of 2001.  They were on tour for the Ancient Melodies of the Future album.  Nice long 90 minute plus sets each night.  With a different mix of songs.  Which Doug talks about briefly at the Boulder show.

Nice sound on these I think.  A very enjoyable re-visit to these shows.  I'm sure I traded these out on CDR back then.  These files are a fresh transfer from my masters.  Fresh ears, fresh tags and art.  Enjoy.

Iggy And The Stooges @ Riot Fest, Byers CO, 2013-09-21

How about another Colorado Riot Fest show?  This one was from the first 2013 edition almost 50 miles east of Denver in Byers.  In a big cow pasture basically.  Iggy and The Stooges featuring Iggy Pop, James Williamson, Steve Mackay, Mike Watt, & Toby Dammit.

This one starts out a bit rough as I get closer to the stage.  Then it's a bit distant sounding but the vocals are pretty clear.  Fun listen.  Then the end suffers because I decide to go get close to the stage the Replacements were playing on. So it is what it is. Warts and all.  Enjoy.

GZA @ Denver Riot Fest, Denver CO, 2015-08-30

Live Hip-hop can be really hit or miss.  This performance from GZA on this scorching hot August day back in 2015 was mostly hit.  GZA keeps the banter to a minimum and just spits fire with Wu hit after Wu hit.

Crowd is a bit chatty inbetween songs since the lyrics are fairly complex no one is trying to rap along with GZA,  I'm happy with how this sounds and it was a fun performance.  Figured what the hell I'll throw it up on TTTAT.  Enjoy.
