X & Rhett Miller @ LODO Music Fest, Denver CO, 2003-07-19

 

Here is a fun double feature from right after the turn of the century.  For a bunch of years near the baseball park in downtown Denver there was the LODO Music Fest.  Always and interesting a diverse lineup.  In 2003 it included Joan Osborne, X, Medeski Martin Wood, BoDeans, Dark Star Orchestra, Ohio Players, Rhett Miller, Steel Pulse, Blind Boys of Alabama, Radiators, Iguanas, Rob Base Kurtis Blow, Camper Van Beethoven.  

They must have been cool with tapers because I recall my friend Tom flying his mics on a stand.  Maybe we knew the sound person.  Too long ago to remember.  Tom recorded X & Rhett Miller from Old 97s that day.  I bet he recorded Camper too.  I need to see if I have that one. In the meantime here are sets from Rhett Miller and X.  

There is a fun overlap between these two.  On the Old 97's album 'Too Far To Care' Exene Cervenka from the band X sings on their song 'Four Leaf Clover'.  About midway though Rhett's solo set on this day he expresses his love for the band X and covers X's song 'Dancing with Tears in My Eyes'.  Two songs later Rhett is joined by Exene to sing 'Four Leaf Clover'.  I was so thrilled.  Still was listening back all these years later.

Rhett plays a nice mix of new solo album songs, Old 97s songs, and some fun covers.

X's set is all hits.  As is every show they play.  I'm a gigantic fan.  They have announce that they are doing their last tour ever.  Covering 2024 into 2025.  I missed this years Denver show.  I hope perhaps we might get one more chance in Denver.  Fingers crossed.  If not I got to see them lots and lots of times.

I had been wanting to share this stellar recording Tom made for awhile.  Had a great time listening to this one and thinking about that time.  Enjoy.

X @ The Coach House, San Juan Capistrano CA. 1985-09-15

 

Here is another cassette from the Kat Georges archive.  This time an uncirculated X show from 1985 at The Coach House in San Juan Capistrano California.   Kat's tape and J card were undated so I'm not 100% sure of the 15th being correct.   On setlist FM they list a September 13th show in San Diego, and a September 14th show in Irvine.   There is a poster for that one.

So I think it is safe to assume that this Coach House show was on the 15th or sometime shortly there after.  The sound quality is not good.  It's a rough listen and what I would call a big fan only recording.  Interesting setlist with a fair about of banter from John and Excene.  Even though the quality is poor it is an uncirculated recording and I figured I would get it out into the world.

Here is another cassette master from the Kat George archive.  This time it's a show that she didn't record but a friend of hers did.  I suspect this is the 1st or 2nd gen copy made from the master cassette.

This was the Knitters 2nd official show ever.  The Knitters were a group started by X members John Doe and Excene Cervenka in 1982. They were joined by Dave Alvin.  It's said they started this rootsy country folk act as a response to the increasingly violent and hardcore turn the punk scene had taken around this time.  I think that they just really loved playing it and had more to do with it ultimately. 

X members were older than a lot of the up and coming punk scene and had grown up listening to folk, country, 60s bands, even the Doors. The very things punk supposedly stood against. There was always that kind of roots edge to X's punk sound. 

In 2000 I saw John Doe play an afternoon instore set at Waxtrax Records in Denver's Capital Hill neighborhood.    He played the Silver Wings cover that day too and said a lot of his motivation to get into playing music to start with stemmed from wanting to be like Merle Haggard.

 I had been part of sharing this recording before way back in 2005ish.   It got torrented on DIME back then  I lost all of those original files years ago and made a fresh transfer of this show with my new setup after rediscovering these tapes in a box not long ago.   I have to assume this is an upgrade to that original file set.   It's still a audience recording in a not ideal for sound room.  The quieter numbers  sound the best.  It gets a bit blown out on the louder numbers.  Enjoy

X @ Cal State Long Beach soccer field, Long Beach CA, 1984-03-30

 

Here is post #5 of recordings from the Kat archive.  Today featuring another uncirculated recording from her cassette stash.  This time Los Angeles punk icons X playing on a soccer field at the Cal State Long Beach campus.  Just over 39 years ago.   It sounds like it was a Miller beer sponsored spring break event maybe.  John mentions there being a gigantic inflatable Miller bottle at one point.  

X is a pretty well documented band so I assumed I could figure out the date of this show and other details fairly easily.  The cassette was undated but I was told mid 80s.  I looked and looked and have found no mentions of this show at all.  They toured a lot back then so I'm sure they took any opportunity to play.  Even at a rowdy campus event.  Probably was a good payday.

This got me excited about having a recording that no one had heard in ages.  The quality is not amazing being that it is outside on a soccer field.  Mid set it sounds like it might be raining.  So weather is a bit of an issue. There is some wind phasing in places.  Lots of  nice moments too.  I would call this a fan only recording since most listeners don't want to hear all the extra atmosphere that is surrounding the taper.  Me I love that stuff.  

I was still at a loss for an accurate date for this show but I decided to just go ahead and process it and once I got it tracked and tagged I could figure that out.  Well at the start of the recording Kat and my friend Randy do a recording test where Randy describes the day and mentions that it is March 30th 1984.  Thanks Randy!!  You saved the day and ended the research.

Like I mentioned.  The sound is what it is and there is some rowdy crowd interaction and some odd tape moments that I faded in and out of.  But a hell of a setlist.  Warts and all.  Enjoy.

While I was posting the Rollins Band show I noticed that I have posted a lot of John Doe shows and even and Excene show but I had never posted any of my X recordings.  Figured I might as well post up the accompanying X set from that night.

I think the sound on this is really nice and just look at the setlist!!  24 songs and 2 encores.  I've seen some fantastic X shows over the years but this one is up there.  Enjoy.
