Backyard Babies @ Larimer Lounge, Denver CO, 2005-06-21

Tons and tons of great rock n roll music was coming out of Sweden and Scandinavia in the late 90s and aughts.  Both the Hellacopters and Backyard Babies made some attempts to break in America with minimal results.  A lot of it seemed pretty radio friendly but the Clear Channel radio takeover was complete by them and I can't imagine that they were very receptive to it.

There were some staunch rawk loyalists that were coming out to the shows but compared to the gigs that they would play in Europe shows in America were at pretty small venues.  The calculation that it just wasn't worth it to tour the US had to have been made and I don't think the Backyard Babies have ever come back since this 2005 tour.

I think it was the year before when I saw them opening up for Social Distortion at the Fillmore.  I loved it and I recall them getting a pretty good reaction but that didn't translate to drawing a crowd when the came back to play the Larimer Lounge along with Crash Kelly and Chelsea Smiles.

They are still putting out new records to this day.  Might have to head across the pond if I ever want to see them live again.

Great setlist at the Larimer this night and a decent recording.  Enjoy.

Garland Jeffreys @ Lion's Lair, Denver CO, 2005-01-07

The (worlds famous) Lion's Lair gets derided and a divy punk bar, and it is that, but it has hosted a wide array of performers that you wouldn't expect to see there.   Gil Scott-Heron played there once, maybe twice.   There were shows by Jonathan Richman of The Modern Lovers, The Decemberists, Ozomatli, & The Black Keys even.  John Doe from X had played over 30 solo shows here.

Not a surprise to see Garland Jeffreys then I suppose.  He played the Lair a couple times.  Last time was in 2012.  My recording here is from a 2005 performance.

Depending on who you ask Garland might be best know for his song "Wild In The Streets" that the Circle Jerks covered.  He came up in the early 70s New York rock scene and has played with Lou Reed and John Cale.  He has released at least 15 albums under his name.  Quite prolific and a big back catalog that is worth digging into.

He took a long hiatus in the 90s but returned to touring in the aughts and released an new album in 2011 to critical acclaim. In 2019 he decided to ease back out of the spotlight and only preforms sporadically.

If your a fan go support him from his website.  They have a lot of merch, CDs, and vinyl up there for sale.  All ways support independent artist anytime you can.  It's especially important in this crazy time when these artists can't tour.

At this show Garland was joined by longtime collaborator with a long list of credits of his own Alan Freedman.   Enjoy.

Foggy Mountain Fuckers @ Bluebird Theater, Denver CO, 1998-09-03

Out of my own fog that my 2nd dose of the Pfizer vax put me in.  I decided to revisit this Foggy Mountain Fuckers show from way back in 1998.  23 years ago.  Holy shit.

Certainly near the top of my 'band I've seen the most' list.  Hell they played at my wedding.  So to say I'm a big fan might not go far enough.

I've been compiling all of my Foggy Mountain Fuckers recordings recently. I was ready to start giving all of them a listen and do any EQ tweaks or edits.  I decided to go in chronological order and started with this 1998 set.  I had forgotten how fantastic this recording was.

I didn't make this recording.  I had it on CDR for at least 20 years so I figured I could share it for posterity sake on here.  Please enjoy.

ZEKE @ Bluebird Theater, Denver CO, 2000-06-22

I love Zeke and have seen them a ton of times.  Based on my records I believe I saw them 5 times in 2000 alone.  This particular show Zeke played with the New Bomb Turks at the Bluebird.  Zeke were total road dogs during the late 90's into the mid aughts.  No wonder they got burned out splintered apart.

Marky is still holding it together and they toured occasionally and put out a new album back in 2018.  I would still go see them any chance I get.  Which who knows when that will be.

This was still the Dirty Sanchez tour but they played a bunch of songs off of the upcoming 2001Death Alley album.  Lots of the classic old Zeke songs.  Lots of Marky and Donny talking shit to the crowd.
Good times.

I have a ton of Zeke recordings and will try and get some more up this year.  Enjoy.

Supersuckers @ Albums On The Hill, Boulder CO, 2003-06-21

I'm working through all of my recordings I have of my friends The Foggy Mountain Fuckers.  I'm transferring a bunch of shows from the minidisc masters.  Many of those have multiple shows from different bands so I'm just getting all of the music off of them as I go.

One of those minidiscs had this Supersuckers in-store performance at Albums On The Hill in Boulder.  They had been on a run of Colorado shows.  Fort Collins on the 19th, Denver on the 20th, and then Boulder on the 21st.  This was in the afternoon before their show at the Boulder Theater.

They were on tour for their 2003 album Motherfuckers Be Trippin' and the classic original lineup of Eddie Spaghetti, Dan Bolton, Ron Heathman, and Dancing Eagle was still intact.

I'm pretty sure that I have never pulled this off the master before.
Some fun covers and a nice mix of new and old songs.  Sounds really good I think.   Enjoy.

Blacksmiths @ Larimer Lounge, Denver CO, 2004-07-10

Blacksmiths were a Denver band in the aughts that did mash ups of Black Sabbath and Smiths songs.  The band consisted of Rich from Boss 302 fame singing and the guys from Derailed as the back up band.  Sure it's a little silly I guess but it was a lot of fun and they did a really good job preforming these mash ups.  The vocals are great and the musicianship is top notch.  Lesser bands would have made a mess of the concept.

At one point Rich thanks the 10 of us that came out.  I don't remember who else was on the bill or why so few people were there on a Saturday night.  Might have been a bummer at the time but not having many people there sure helped my recording.   I think this sound good so enjoy this blast from the past.

Trouble @ Three Kings Tavern, Denver CO, 2008-07-05

Here is a capture of a band in transition.   Trouble was on tour for their newest album, Simple Mind Condition, that they had recorded with the original singer Eric Wagner.  Wagner let the band in May of 2008 and they recruited Kory Clark from Warrior Soul for vocals.  Kory doesn't sound quite like Wagner but is a fitting substitute.

Pretty nice capture of their Denver stop of the tour from my friend Twister.  Enjoy.
