Planes Mistaken For Stars @ Westword Music Showcase, Denver CO, 2007-06-16

Sad news this week.  Gared from Planes Mistaken For Stars passed away after a long battle with cancer.  I only talked with him a few times over the years and he was always a nice genuine guy.  Not surprisingly he left a big impact and will be missed greatly by many.

This show was from what stands as my favorite Westword Music Showcase.  The outdoor stage featured Machine Gun Blues, Planes Mistaken For Stars, The Swayback, Lucero, and Dinosaur Jr.

I think this might have been the first year at this location.  The neighbors in the fancy art museum apartments didn't appreciate the loud music and raucous rock n roll attitudes.

The trouble started when Machine Gun Blues vocalist came out and said " I just like to take a second to say fuck you to all the sponsors...rock n roll doesn't need sponsors"  They received an onstage warning about not cursing on stage and supposedly were threatened with arrest if they continued.  Which not warmly welcomed and they played their song "We Fucked It All Up" next.

The PMFS guys must have been warned as well because right before "Say Not A Word" Gared has a little something to say about that.  I have another PMFS set from later on in the summer of 2007 that I will try and get posted as well.  RIP Gared.

Mike Watt and the Missingmen @ Lion's Lair, Denver CO, 2021-11-13

Fun to be back at the Lion's Lair for a show again.  I can't remember when the last time was.  Sometime in 2019 I would guess.  I dropped in back in 2020 one night when the were open.  Always have loved this place.

Mike Watt and the Missingmen were quite the 1st show back.  The local openers The Pollution were also great.  Fun night all around with a good crowd.   They played again on Sunday night but I just couldn't swing it.

I think this sounds really nice but it has plenty of the ol' Lion's Lair atmosphere on here.  I don't think it takes away from the enjoyment very much.

Right around the 5th song in the shelf I had clamped my mic pole to got backed into causing the it to collapse and down went my mics.  People around them righted them as best they could.  I noticed pretty quickly and jammed the pole into my gear bag on top of the jukebox.

Guy that did it apologized but it was just an accident.  Like I said good crowd.  Enjoy.

The Jayhawks @ Bluebird Theater, Denver CO , 2003-11-18

Here is a Jayhawks set from the Bluebird Theater in Denver Colorado from back on November 18th 2003.  They were on tour for their new album Rainy Day Music.  The touring lineup included founding members Louris and Perlman,  drummer Tim O'Reagan, & Stephen McCarthy.

This show also featured the fantastic Canadian band The Sadies as the openers.  Travis and Dallas from the Sadies both come out and join the Jayhawks for songs at the end of the set.

I think this one sounds really nice.  I continue to be surprised listening back to some of these CSB recordings I made back then.  Enjoy.

YOB @ Psycho Vegas, Las Vegas, NV, 2017-08-17

How about another 2017 Psycho Vegas set.  This time it's YOB's pre-party set from the Thursday night before the main fest kicked off.  They played in the smaller Vinyl room next to the big room at the Hard Rock Hotel.  Sub Rosa opened up.

Setlist is mostly songs from The Great Cessation and Clearing The Path To Assend.   Crowd is a bit chatty in some of the quite parts but not terrible.

Looking forward to seeing Yob again live soon.  They have just announced a bunch of tour dates.

Enjoy.

Wolves In The Throne Room @ Psycho Vegas, Las Vegas, NV, 2017-08-18

While I had been a fan for awhile this was my first time seeing WITTR live.  On a giant stage in Las Vegas at that.   Always a bit weird to see a band that you know would play a lot smaller room in your home town up on a big stage.   Good for them though it was pretty great with the monster sound system and big production lights.

This show wold have been part of the touring for the Thrice Woven album but mostly features songs from the Two Hunters album.

They have continued the great work and released the fantastic Primordial Arcana in 2021.  I look forward to catching them on tour for that album in 2022.

As always go out an support live music and artists anyway you can.  They provided a lot of light and love to people even when it is in the form of atmospheric Cascadian black metal.

This recording was done with the internal mics on the M10.  Not an ideal situation.  I can't recall why I had to use them and not outboard mics.   Regardless I was pleasantly surprised on how good this sounds.  It helps that it was recorded from a fix position.  Enjoy.

Rocket From The Crypt @ The Starlight, Ft Collins CO, 2001-07-18

I was thinking about Rocket From the Crypt recently.  I read that they were having a special Halloween show in San Diego this year.  Some kind of 3D spooktacular.   No doubt it was a super fun event.  I miss seeing them live so that they are still getting out and playing does my heart good.

It got me to thinking about they times that I have seen them and which recording I have shared.  I remembered that I have never posted this 2001 set from The Startlight in Fort Collins Colorado.

It was a hot, hot, July night and John Reis mentions that fact multiple times and about how the crowds bad body odor is affecting the the tuning of their guitars and the sound of the amps.  He recommends that one gentleman in the crowd "meets my friend soap".   It was mostly jokes but I'm sure it was rip in that place that night.

John also mentioned that it was their first time in town but I have a RFTC recording from a show in Ft Collins from way back in 1993.

Wretch Like Me and Bill the Welder opened up for this show.

Sound pretty good I think.  Nice clear vocals and nothing is blown out.  Enjoy.

Shooter Jennings @ Boulder Theatre, Boulder CO, 2006-08-30

Shooter is the only son of Walyon Jennings and Jessi Colter.  He's been am active musician since a young age and tried his hand in multiple genres over the years.

In 2005 he out out a country album that made a fairly big splash called "Put the 'O' Back in Country'. Followed up by 'Electric Rodeo'.    Those too are my favorite that I have spent the most time listening too.  But it had a large catalog of releases that worth exploring.

Around that time he started hitting the road pretty hard and eventually ended up in Boulder Colorado for this show.  I recall that this show was fairly sparsely attended and Shooter comments from the stage that they didn't know how Boulder was going to like some country music.   I remember there was a group of women who won tickets to the show from KYGO, or whatever the big pop country radio station was at the time, and they didn't seem very into it.

I thought it was a great show and at the time Shooter was open to people recording his shows and I ran a big tall mic stand to capture this.   That and the small crowd helped me make a nice capture.

I posted this on COtapers.org back then.  This version has been sweetened up a bit and freshly tagged.
Enjoy
