Bolonium @ Hi Dive, Denver CO, 2022-06-16

At the recent Bob Log show I also recorded audio of the openers Bolonium.  I shared the audio with them and they liked it so much their drummer Bonnie Finley made a video to go along with it.

I've know Bonnie for awhile but I hadn't caught Bolonium before this night.  Fun smart stuff.  Really great energy and I look forward to seeing them again.  Check out the video below and I have a few pic too.
Enjoy!

Bob Log III @ Hi Dive, Denver CO, 2022-06-16

Bob Log III is someone I have wanted to see for a long time.  At least since the early aughts.  Can't remember if I heard his song "Clap You Tits" or "Boob Scotch" first.  I heard tales of his live show and wanted to see but despite going to 100s of shows a year since the 90s I never caught him.

I saw he was coming to the Hi Dive this June and decided that I wasn't going to miss it.  I'm sure it's not nearly as crazy as it was back in the day but he put on a hell of a fun show.  Good time was had by all.  Lots of smiling faces.  What more could you want?

I took a crack at the setlist but was overwhelmed fairly quickly.  If you a big fan and can fill in the many blanks for me I would appreciate it.   Sounds really nice too I think.  Enjoy.

UNSANE @ Hi Dive, Denver CO, 2017-07-18

I've seen Unsane a bunch of times but according to my records I have only recorded them twice.  Once back in 2003 and this 2017 show at the Hi Dive.

One of  my favorite Unsane shows, that I wish I had a recording of, was when the opened up for Slayer at the Aztlan in 1996.   The crowd was hyped for Slayer as per usual and were chanting Slayer and generally giving the opening bands a hard time.  Well Chris Spencer won them over, or at least got the crowd to shut up, by out Slayering them.   At one point he admonishes the crowd.  "Oh your Slayer fans?  Is that all you got?  I got the mic and the PA".  Then he started screaming "SSSSSSSLLLLLLLLLAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" into the mic repeatedly.  The crowd calmed down after that and let them finish in relative piece.

That was my first time seeing Unsane and the won me over big time.  They are also the only band I have ever seen open for Slayer that used a harmonica in a song.

Unsane announced that they were calling it quits in 2018 because Chris was going to concentrate on other bands.  That lasted a few years and then the announced that Unsane was going to be a going concern but live was going to play older material.   The got a one show under their belt in 2021 and then you know what happened.   Looks like they have played a couple shows in 2022.

Chris Spencer had been putting his attention towards his new band Human Impact that has put out an amazing album and EP so far.   Check that shit out if you're a fan of Unsane.

I recall this show was really loud and the bass tone is insane.  Enjoy.

Bill The Welder @ Starlight, Ft Collins, CO, 2001-07-18

I just heard that longtime Ft Collins punk rock fixture Bug (aka Daniel Snow) has passed away.  I only met the man a few times of the last 20 years or so.  But I know a lot of my Fort Collins friends were really close with the man.  RIP Bug.

I thought as a tribute I would post my only recording of his band Bill The Welder that I have.  This was from a hot summer night back in 2001 when BTW opened up for Rocket From The Crypt.

Crime and the City Solution @ Casino Cabaret, Denver CO, 1988-11-29

Going way back for this one.  A 34 year old show from the Lantz Barbour cassette archive.  He recorded this show back then and it was one of the tapes in a box he entrusted me to transfer for him.  I've posted a bunch of his recordings already but just got around to working on this one.

Casino Cabaret was on Welton and is now called Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom.  Not too long ago they took down the old Casino Cabaret marquee and some people were upset to be losing that historic signage.

If your not familiar. Crime and the City Solution are a Australian band started in 1977 by Simon Bonney. He is the only constant in the various memberships over the years and they relocated to London and other places over time .  He was friends with Nick Cave and the Birthday Party guys and has had members of that band in various incarnations.  This show has Mick Harvey on drums. They were mostly active until about 1990 when they disbanded and Simon put out some solo albums.

In the mean time there was a reunion in 2011 with some touring and a new album in 2014.  Doing some research for this post I see that they have reformed again and have a bunch of 2022 dates in Europe.

Lantz managed to capture some pretty good recordings with his cassette recorder setup.  This one is another where the fidelity isn't amazing but the mics remained in a fixed position for the entirety of the performance and other than sounding a bit distant I think it's quite a nice listen.  Other than a few cassette dubs I think this has never really been widely circulated.  Enjoy

mssv @ Lion's Lair, Denver CO, 2022-04-17

mssv is Mike Baggetta, Stephen Hodges, Mike Watt.  I honestly didn't know anything about the band other that Mike Watt was involved.  My friend talked me into going to the show on a Sunday night and it was at the tiny Lion's Lair.  Which I love and enjoy seeing shows at.

mssv is Mike Baggetta's band.  He wrote all the music for this Main Steam Stop Valve project and enlisted Mike Watt and Stephen Hodges to play on it.  Baggetta has a master of music degree from Rutgers in jazz studies.  He's been active in that jazz, free jazz world since 2003.

Stephen Hodges is a very accomplished drummer.  His resume includes being on 5 Tom Waits albums, David Lynch soundtracks, he as played with Wanda Jackson, Jonathan Richman, & John Hammond, among others.

And I would hope you know who Mike Watt is.

The set is mostly songs from the mssv album but they squeeze in a little Minutemen and Sun Ra in there too.  The setlist showed "Poem Song" after "Wig Jig" but the crowd was a bit chatty and "Poem Song" is pretty quite.  They played the louder song "Human Reaction" in it's place.

I ran the mics really high so the chatty crowd noise is pretty minimal.  Enjoy.

Mudhoney @ Ogden Theater, Denver CO, 2001-08-18

When I was posted last week's Mudhoney show I realized that I had never posted this 2001 Mudhoney show from the Ogden in Denver.  I guess they were touring for "Tomorrow Hit Today" but that had come out in 1998.  "Since We've Become Translucent" didn't come out until the next year.  They do play a few songs from it though.

Good setlist on this one.  Nice deep cut Alice Cooper cover of "Long Way To Go" and the more often heard covers of the Angry Samoans and Dicks songs.  Locals Super Bees and Black Lamb opened up this show.   Good times great oldies.  Enjoy.
