Heaven and Hell @ Broomfield Events Center, 2007-04-29

Heaven and Hell (aka Dio's Black Sabbath) came to Broomfield's event center back in 2007.  I always really liked Dio and the Sabbath albums that he did.  Compared to Ozzy he can actually sing and I can honestly say I never saw a bad Dio show.  Same can't be said of Ozzy.

My only complaint about this show was no Country Girl in the setlist.

This turned out really nice so please enjoy.

Well that's two Patton posts in a row.  What can I say I'm a fan.  This is a performance of his band Tomahawk on the Geek Tour that also featured Skeleton Key and the Melvins.  Fun night.

Fantômas @ The Bluebird Theater, Denver CO 1999-12-01

The term supergroup gets bandied about in connection with all kinds of unworthy collections of ne'er-do-wells. But I believe the moniker is well suited to this group of gentleman.  All masters of their craft I would submit.  Mike Patton of Faith No More, Mr. Bungle and many more , Buzz Osborne of Melvins, Trevor Dunn of Mr. Bungle, Secret Chiefs & more, Dave Lombardo of Slayer.

I was a fan of all of those groups when I had first heard about Fantômas back in 1998.  To say I was excited was an understatement. I picked up the debut album the day it came out and was not disappointed.  It was different for sure but still accessibly.

This is my capture of their Denver performance on their first tour of the US.  I traded this out a fair amount back in the CDR trading days.  This is a fresh transfer from the original minidisc and a remastering of the recording.  Consider it an upgrade if you've had this before.

Enjoy.

Demented Are Go @ The Larimer Lounge, Denver CO 2003-02-03

Not a lot of foreign pscychobilly bands roll through Denver.  That holds true today just as it did 10 years ago.  So when these guys came through I had to go see it.  Pretty big crowd for a snowy February night.

This is a recording from the soundboard and the guitar is a little low in the mix.  Not bad though.
All in all a fun listen.

Slim Cessna's Auto Club live on the 16th Street Mall.

I worked for an awful company in downtown Denver at the time of this show.  It was during the original internet boom and this company was keeping two sets of books and juggling an eco-compliance company and a kids sporting goods website.  One day we came in and the boss told me that our pay checks were no good and to no bother to cash it.  I wasn't too surprised. It had been kind of shady for awhile.

This Slim Cessna's Auto Club show took place in the early afternoon on workday.  I went to lunch and my regular noon time and just didn't go back until after 2 or so.  Fuck that place.  Enough context let me tell you about the show.

In the yesterdays of the early 00's there used be a Virgin Megastore down on the 16th Street mall here in Denver.  On this day Slim and his band set up and played outside in the courtyard next too it.  In view of the escalator and the Banana Republic store.

The Auto Club was playing to promote their new album Always Say Please And Thank You.  Their performance features many songs from that album and some older classics.  I think the sound is really nice on this one.  Enjoy!

A Perfect Circle live in Denver, CO 2000-09-01

A Perfect Circle on tour four their first album back in 2000.  Way sold out if I recall.
My first wife wanted to go to this show so I got tickets.  I was a fan of Tool but not a huge fan.  Especially since they had started playing arenas by now and I just don't care for giant shows like that most of the time.
Hell this venue is on the about the limit of venue size that I care for.

I had heard the APC album too and didn't hate it but it didn't blow my skirt up either.  Night of the show she decided that she didn't want to go.  No way I wanted to eat the cost of the tickets and frankly I wanted to get out of the house.  Ended up selling her ticket out front for the most over face value that I have every gotten.  Dude was hot to trot to get into the show.

Anyway this isn't the best recording I've ever made but is hardly the worst.  I think the biggest problem with it is that it sounds like the Fillmore.  Big and boomy, filled up with a bunch of yahoos.   Still it's very listenable especially during the less bombastic songs.  It is what it is.  The Cure / Ozzy cover is like chocolate and peanut butter.  Just born to go together.  Enjoy.

Team Sleep live @ The Bluebird, Denver, CO 2005-07-21

Team Sleep is a side project of Deftones front man Chino Moreno.  For being around for so long their output has been pretty small.  Only one official album has been released and a handful of soundtrack and compilation tracks.  There are some demos that got leaked back the early 2000s as well.

I've been a big Deftones / Chino fan for a long time so I was stoked that Team Sleep was coming Denver back in 2005.  They didn't disappoint.  They played the relativelty small Bluebird Theater.

It was super loud and my only other recollection of this show was towards the end this couple stood in front of me and out made out in full "get a room you two" style.  I guess Team Sleep just stirred their passion.

Overall a nice set from the band including a couple songs like "Scarf Bitch" that haven't appeared on any releases.  Enjoy.

Gibby Haynes & His Problem @ Larimer Lounge, Denver CO 2004-09-18

I kind of remember not liking the album Gibby put out with His Problem.  Maybe that is why I filed this away and sat on it for so long.  9 years latter while listening to it to figure out the set list I was thinking it sounded pretty good.

Just as weird and psychedelic as the Butthole Surfers.  More on the mellow side of that coin.  If you are hoping that he played a bunch of B.S. stuff you are going to be disappointed.  He only does one B.S. song. but on the plus side he does a very extended version of The Fuckemos song New Mexico.  You might have heard The Lemonheads version on the cover album they put out a few years back.

I couldn't figure out what track 6 is.  Some of the lyrics seem to be from a Captain and Tennille song but not enough for me to call it a cover.  If any of you readers know what it is I would love to hear about it in the comment.  Thanks.

Enjoy

Botch was opening up for the Murder City Devils this night in Denver.  I believe at the time I had heard of Botch but had never seen them.  They blew the roof off the place.

This was an all ages show and at the time they usually put the under 21 people upstairs in the blacony of the Bluebird.  Well Botch didn't like that and the theater made everyone finish their drinks and go upstairs so that the floor could be all ages.  It made sense really because both Botch and the Murder City Devils were drawing a young crowd.

Here is my recording of Botch on that evening.  Enjoy.

Devotchka @ Riot Fest - Byers CO 2013-09-22

Devotchka played at the same time as Rancid so there wasn't very many people that stuck around in the rain to watch them.  They were kind of the odd man out on the Riot Fest bill anyway.  Still I was excited to see them.  It's been a long time since I had.  I think the last time was way back in 2004 or 5 when I saw them open up for Marilyn Manson.  Speaking of odd billings.

Did I mention the rain?  It was a constant downpour during their set.  In the quite parts you can hear the rain hitting the hood of my jacket.  The band played on undaunted by the weather.

Enjoy

Bad Religion @ Riot Fest - Byers, CO 2013-09-22

Bad Religion was the first band to play once they re-opened the festival site after the inclement weather.  The ground was a sloppy mess but at least it had stopped raining.  For the moment anyway.  The rain did return.

Greg Graffin comments on how good the food smells being grilled and hopes that he gets to have a sausage before the end of the set.  Sure enough right before No Direction someone shows up with some grilled meat on a bun for him.  I've seen a lot of shows but that is the first time I've ever seen concessions delivered to the stage.

Nice mix of old and new songs.  The sound is a little rough at first but gets better as it goes along and as I got closer.  Enjoy.

Kylesa @ Hi Dive 2007-02-07

Kylesa was still touring behind it's 2006 release of Time Will Fuse Its Worth at this show.  So the setlist is heavy with tracks from that release.  With a couple older songs and a Pink Floyd cover thrown in.

They opened up for Wino's band The Hidden Hand.  This was my first time seeing both of the bands and became an instant fan.  I think this turned out really nice and I hope you enjoy it.

Scott "Wino" Weinrich has, and is, in a lot of bands.  Sadly I think this one, The Hidden Hand, is no more.
If your a fan of any of his other bands and are not familiar with these guys do yourself a favor and check it out.  It's right up that doom / stoner rock vein that he mines so fruitfully.

Two Cow Garage @ The Lion's Lair, Denver, CO 2013-10-18

My first almost experience with Two Cow Garage was going to be in Lincoln Nebraska back in 2005.  They were supposed to open up for Slobberbone.  I think their van broke down and they didn't make it that night.  The name was off kilter enough that I didn't forget it and I figured if Slobberbone was going to have them open they must be decent.

Fast forward a couple years later and I find out Denver's own Suburban Home is going to be putting out a Two Cow Garage album and that they were coming to town.  I finally got to see them play live and loved it from the first note.  They just brought the exact kind of sound that I was seeking.

They have put out a couple album since then and some solo records by Shane and Micah.  Not a dud in the bunch.  TCG is a solid rock n roll outfit.  If your not familiar with their music I can't recommend it highly enough.

Last Friday was a full on Two Cow Garage day.  First up I helped out my buddy Dammit Damian capture his first ever live in front of an audience Mostly Harmless podcast at the Mutiny Information Cafe here in Denver.  He talked to the band about a variety of subjects and Micah and Shane handed a guitar back and forth for some song.
Check out his podcast here:

Here is a video I shot of TCG covering Bruce Springsteen's Born To Run at the Lion's Lair.

Against Me! @ Riot Fest - Byers, CO 2013-09-21

For a band that has been going for more then a decade now Against Me! shows no signs of slowing up.  If anything I think their best years might be ahead of them.  I can't wait to hear their new album.

Live they always bring it and this day at Riot Fest was no exception.  The only downside was the sun was setting right behind the band so it made it hard to look up and watch the show.  Nice mix of songs across the Against Me catalog an some new tunes as well.  Enjoy.

FLAG @ Riot Fest - Byers CO, 2013-09-22

Loud Fast Rules!!  Right on the heels of Public Enemy on the next stage over FLAG tore into it.  Super Loud!!!  Also right as a weather front was blowing in.  The wind picked up almost right away and blew one of the side banners hanging from the stage loose.  The crew scrambled to lower the speakers and secure everything from the approaching storm while the band played on.  20 minutes in or so they cut power to the PA and emergency weather announcements started to be heard.

Then we were told to evacuate the site.  It appeared that a storm with 1" hail, strong wind, rain, and lightning was headed out way.  It turned out that the worst of it mostly missed the farm.  We just got rained on and wind blown.  After 2+ hours the reopened the site and all the scheduled bands still played.  Mostly in a downpour the later it got.

The combination of the volume from the stage and the uptic in the wind take a toll on the quality of this recording.  Vocals are clear though.  It is what it is.  Warts and all.  Enjoy.

It's been a decade since I last got to see Rocket From The Crypt and I sure have missed seeing them.  Sure their were some heavy hitters on the Riot Fest bill but RFTC being on it convinced me that I had to go.
