Crime and the City Solution @ Casino Cabaret, Denver CO, 1988-11-29

Going way back for this one.  A 34 year old show from the Lantz Barbour cassette archive.  He recorded this show back then and it was one of the tapes in a box he entrusted me to transfer for him.  I've posted a bunch of his recordings already but just got around to working on this one.

Casino Cabaret was on Welton and is now called Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom.  Not too long ago they took down the old Casino Cabaret marquee and some people were upset to be losing that historic signage.

If your not familiar. Crime and the City Solution are a Australian band started in 1977 by Simon Bonney. He is the only constant in the various memberships over the years and they relocated to London and other places over time .  He was friends with Nick Cave and the Birthday Party guys and has had members of that band in various incarnations.  This show has Mick Harvey on drums. They were mostly active until about 1990 when they disbanded and Simon put out some solo albums.

In the mean time there was a reunion in 2011 with some touring and a new album in 2014.  Doing some research for this post I see that they have reformed again and have a bunch of 2022 dates in Europe.

Lantz managed to capture some pretty good recordings with his cassette recorder setup.  This one is another where the fidelity isn't amazing but the mics remained in a fixed position for the entirety of the performance and other than sounding a bit distant I think it's quite a nice listen.  Other than a few cassette dubs I think this has never really been widely circulated.  Enjoy

mssv @ Lion's Lair, Denver CO, 2022-04-17

mssv is Mike Baggetta, Stephen Hodges, Mike Watt.  I honestly didn't know anything about the band other that Mike Watt was involved.  My friend talked me into going to the show on a Sunday night and it was at the tiny Lion's Lair.  Which I love and enjoy seeing shows at.

mssv is Mike Baggetta's band.  He wrote all the music for this Main Steam Stop Valve project and enlisted Mike Watt and Stephen Hodges to play on it.  Baggetta has a master of music degree from Rutgers in jazz studies.  He's been active in that jazz, free jazz world since 2003.

Stephen Hodges is a very accomplished drummer.  His resume includes being on 5 Tom Waits albums, David Lynch soundtracks, he as played with Wanda Jackson, Jonathan Richman, & John Hammond, among others.

And I would hope you know who Mike Watt is.

The set is mostly songs from the mssv album but they squeeze in a little Minutemen and Sun Ra in there too.  The setlist showed "Poem Song" after "Wig Jig" but the crowd was a bit chatty and "Poem Song" is pretty quite.  They played the louder song "Human Reaction" in it's place.

I ran the mics really high so the chatty crowd noise is pretty minimal.  Enjoy.

Mudhoney @ Ogden Theater, Denver CO, 2001-08-18

When I was posted last week's Mudhoney show I realized that I had never posted this 2001 Mudhoney show from the Ogden in Denver.  I guess they were touring for "Tomorrow Hit Today" but that had come out in 1998.  "Since We've Become Translucent" didn't come out until the next year.  They do play a few songs from it though.

Good setlist on this one.  Nice deep cut Alice Cooper cover of "Long Way To Go" and the more often heard covers of the Angry Samoans and Dicks songs.  Locals Super Bees and Black Lamb opened up this show.   Good times great oldies.  Enjoy.

Mudhoney @ HQ, Denver CO, 2022-05-03

I first saw Mudhoney on a bonkers bill in 1992 at Redrocks Amphitheater.  They played after Pavement, then Sonic Youth and Primus headlined.  I'm sure I was a fan by then.  I have this funny memory of my first wife really hating their song "Into The Drink" and the video for it.  Caught them again in 1993 opening for Pearl Jam along with Urge Overkill.  I try to never miss them.

Was super excited when the announced a date at HQ in my neighborhood.  HQ is where the beloved Three Kings Tavern was.  It certainly isn't the same but the shows that are getting booked into that space are hard to pass up.  Wasn't going to miss this one.

The grunge label kind of diluted what Mudhoney always was and continues to be.  A punk rock band at heart.  Certainly the put their own unique stamp on it.  Just look at the set list.  A lot of pointed punk rock statement pieces in there.  With so many songs in their catalog your never going to hear every song that you would hope to at one of their shows.  But this set felt pretty close to perfection.  Thanks Mudhoney.  That was cathartic.  Enjoy.

Bad Brains, @ Ogden Theater, Denver CO, 2001-02-03

This was my first time seeing Bad Brains.  Or Soul Brains as they were going by at the time.  I can't recall why that was.  Some legal issue no doubt.  They dropped the Soul and went back to Bad in 2005.

This was before the updated the Ogden and the sound inside the venue.  It has a tall ceiling and always sounded kind of boomy in there.  This brought me right back to that sound.  It is what it is.  I had some mic issue at the end of track 6 and into 7.  A little bit of static there for a little bit.

I know I traded this out on CDR back in aughts a fair amount.  This is a fresh transfer from my MD master.  New EQ, tracking, and tagging.  I consider it an upgrade if you had this before. Enjoy.
