Slim Cessna's Auto Club @ Ogden Theatre, Denver CO, 1999-07-02

End of an era here in Denver Colorado.  Slim from Slim Cessna's Auto Club has announced that the band is done.  After 30+ years he wants to hang it up.  He got married not to long ago and is going to continue to perform with her on a limited basis.  They have release a few songs.  Munly is touring as a solo act now.  I'm sure his other acts will continue too.  Slim's son George has a great new band called El Welk and plays solo occasionally.  Life moves on in the Queen city.  So it goes.

30 years is a hell of a run and I saw a ton of SCAC and related shows in that time frame.  Thanks to Slim and all the members for all the great music and good times over the years.

I've shared a lot of my SCAC recordings but not this one before.  On this night in July of 1999 SCAC opened up for Primus at the Ogden Theatre in Denver Colorado.  I remember being stoked since I was fans of both bands but thinking it was kind of an odd billing.   Well a certain percentage of Primus fans thought that too.  Very vocally in between some of the songs.  Chanting "Primus sucks" as they would do in that era.  You can also hear people cheering as well and SCAC were pros by this point and still sounded great I think even if some of the crowd was hot garbage.

Great setlist on this night with one remnant from the pre Munly days with "Lethal Injection" and lots of stuff from Always Say Please And Thank You.  Enjoy.

Slim Cessnas Auto Club @ Bluebird Theatre, Denver CO, 2003-12-30

The Slim Cessna New Years show have long been a Denver tradition.  By the time I noticed that there had not been an announcement for this year it was way passed time that there would be one.  I didn't make it every year but I saw a bunch over the years.  All good things come to an end.  So it goes.

It got me to wondering if I had any New Year SCAC shows that I had recorded but not shared.  Turns out I only have the one show from 2001.  I posted that a few years ago.  The closest I had was this day before NYE show from 2003.  I transferred all of my minidisc masters digitally back in 2003 and must not have listed to what this was back then or I might have shared it sooner.

I got a board feed on this night and it sounds pretty great but has some irregularities that a board feed can have.  This is the house mix so vocals are forefront and most of the instruments are a bit subdued.
Also the in-between song parts are really quite.  You can barely hear the crowd.  Good and bad.

I also might have shelved back in 2003 because at the end Slim plays the 1st part of "Last Song About Satan" with his capo on and the rest of the band can't play along.  It gets resolved and everyone has a laugh.  Before the last song Slim says how embarrassed he was and he hopes he never has to hear what that sounded like.  Honestly since the guitars are so low in the mix it doesn't sound to bad.  I figure since it was 22 years ago I'm safe to share it.  Cheers to the Auto Club and all the fun times.

Slim Cessnas Auto Club @ Bluebird Theatre, Denver CO, 1999-05-29

Here is an older one.  I had only been recording live audio at show for about a month or so at this point.  I was already a big SCAC fan and had seen them many times.  I tried to record them a the Lion's Lair a few weeks before and totally botched it.  This was my redemption.

In 1999 SCAC was going through a big change.  Long time member Frank Hauser Jr was no longer in the band and Munly had joined not long before this.  This is a transition show where they are still playing some of the old numbers from the 1st 2 CDs,.   Once they got rolling with Munly and the new songs started coming they never played these old songs very much anymore.

Wish I could remember were I stood and recorded this.  There is very little crowd chatter and I think it sounds pretty nice.  Enjoy.

Oh man Slim Cessna's Auto Club are coming up on the 20th anniversary of their annual New Year's Eve show.  Where did the time go.  The first was in 1999 at the Gothic Theater.  This year it is going to be a the Hi Dive.  I've made it to quite a few over the years.  At least one of the 2 nights usually.

I missed the 1999 show because my wife at the time was scared by all the Y2K horseshit and I wasn't allowed to go.   Going to try and make the 30th show this year.  Have other plans for NYE.

Hadn't listened to this 2001 show in a long time.  I think it sounds pretty nice.  I can't remember where I setup for this but crown noise and chattiness is fairly minimal.  And what a set list.  Lost of old school classics in this one.   The opened with my favorite Last Song About Satan but I must not have been ready to hit record and I missed all of that and the beginning of Cranston City Sinner.

Big thanks to Sherry Crawford for letting my post her photos of this event.  It was an epic NYE.

Enjoy

Slim Cessna's Auto Club live on the 16th Street Mall.

I worked for an awful company in downtown Denver at the time of this show.  It was during the original internet boom and this company was keeping two sets of books and juggling an eco-compliance company and a kids sporting goods website.  One day we came in and the boss told me that our pay checks were no good and to no bother to cash it.  I wasn't too surprised. It had been kind of shady for awhile.

This Slim Cessna's Auto Club show took place in the early afternoon on workday.  I went to lunch and my regular noon time and just didn't go back until after 2 or so.  Fuck that place.  Enough context let me tell you about the show.

In the yesterdays of the early 00's there used be a Virgin Megastore down on the 16th Street mall here in Denver.  On this day Slim and his band set up and played outside in the courtyard next too it.  In view of the escalator and the Banana Republic store.

The Auto Club was playing to promote their new album Always Say Please And Thank You.  Their performance features many songs from that album and some older classics.  I think the sound is really nice on this one.  Enjoy!

Slim Cessna's Auto Club, Live at 3 Kings, Denver CO., March 14th 2009

This recording is from the 2nd night of a two night stand at the 3 Kings Tavern.  It also marked the first time I had seen the band for a couple of years.  I've been a fan since the end of the 90's with the Frank Hauser Jr. lineup and all the various line ups through out the years.  And while I've always enjoyed the band I had just seen them so many times that I started skipping show.  Which became fewer and farther between over the years since not all of the band lives in Denver any more.  So I was looking forward to the show that happened on this March Saturday.  The band was just as great, if not even better, then I had remembered them.  They continue to put out great albums and deliver the goods live.  I hope you enjoy this recording of the show.
