Lunachicks @ Adams County Fairgrounds, Brighton CO, 2000-07-09

This was the first year they held the Warped Tour at the Adams County Fairgrounds.  The year before it had been held in the parking lot of the original Mile High stadium in Denver.  I lived up in the Northern burbs back then so I was stoked that I could ride my bike to the show.

I won 6 tickets to this Warped tour because I knew that the main guy in Flogging Molly had been the singer for 80s hard rock band Fastway.  I gave 3 away to friends and kept 1 for myself.  Then I gave the others away to people waiting in line that I deemed had cool band shirts on.

The poster has Green Day listed but I'm pretty sure they didn't play on this date.  Neither did the Supersuckers.  Because I for sure would have made an effort to record both of those sets and I only have recordings of Lunachicks, Snapcase, NOFX, Long Beach Dub Allstars, The Donnas, & T.S.O.L.

I must have had a limited number of blank minidiscs because in retrospect I would have recorded a bunch of the other bands too.  I've already posted the NOFX set from this day.  Snapcase is going up soon.

This was either the last or one of the last Lunachicks shows before they went on a long hiatus.  They talk about this being their last Warped Tour show.   So I count myself lucky to have gotten to see them.  They had scheduled at reunion show for 2020 but then the pandemic has postponed that to a later date.

Recording outside is always a challenge.  Especially at a Warped tour like situation with people moshing to anything and everything.  This one sounds pretty good.  The vocals are clear but music is a little phased out in placed due to the wind.  Fun short set though.  A bunch of classic Lunachicks songs and a Cars cover thrown in for good measure.

Jesse Malin @ Fox Theatre, Boulder CO, 2003-09-06

Here is a set from Jesse Malin.  He was a member of NYC band D-Generation in the 90s.  After that had run it's course he started putting out solo albums.  This show in Boulder Colorado was part of his touring for his 2002 album The Fine Art Of Self Destruction.

Jesse is joined for this set by keyboardist extraordinaire Joe McGinty.  Big sound from just the two of them.  Mostly songs from Jesse's first album and a Springsteen cover.  Jesse tells a few stories to set up the songs along the way too.   Fun short set.  This was opening for the New Amsterdam's

Enjoy

Live At The 15th Street Tavern 1998-2004

Live at the 15th Street Tavern

A warts and all collection of recordings I made at the 15th St
over the years from 1998 - 2004.  All of these are my recordings except the 1998 Zeke show and the 2002 Orange Goblin show.  I don't have good info on who captured those.

I saw a ton of shows at the 15th Street Tavern over the years.  Way more than I made recordings of.  I managed to capture 35 individual sets from 27 different bands.  Pretty good haul.

It was kind of a dump and the floor was so sticky that it would pull your shoe off if you weren't careful.  The low stage and low ceiling made it a fantastic place to see some loud music though.

My favorite ever show had to have been seeing Queens Of The Stone Age there in 1999.  Right when they were getting going.  Amazing shows from Murder City Devils, Zeke too.

Sound quality is a bit all over the place.  All of it is listenable though.  Like I said warts and all presented in chronological order.

Deadbolt @ Benders Tavern, Denver CO, 2007-03-09

The self proclaimed "Worlds Most Dangerous Band" Deadbolt!!  Live at the missed Denver venue Benders Tavern back in 2007.  This was part of a two night stand at Benders.  This was night one when the amazing local band Get Three Coffins Ready opened up.

If you are unfamiliar. Deadbolt are a heavy surf rock group that often preformed to 2 bass players, lots of reverb, and songs about tiki monsters, crime, psychotic clowns, truckers.  Surrounded by yellow caution tape and dressed like outlaw bikers.

I was lucky enough to catch them live a few times but this is the only recording I have.  The last time I saw them live was at the Tiki Oasis fest in San Diego and they played in the daytime with tons of people with their kids hanging out in lawn chairs watching and frowning at the Deadbolt fans trying to get down front to watch the band.  This Benders show was much more fun.

The crowd was a bit rowdy and loud but they band was louder.  Nice big surf sound on this capture.
Enjoy.

High On Fire @ Bluebird Theater, Denver CO, 2002-07-16

Heavy metal lifers High On Fire live at the Bluebird back in 2002.  On their way up.  The time before this they played the much smaller 15th St Tavern.  On tour for Surrounded By Thieves.

Local support was provided by Black Lamb and Crimson Haybailer.  This was a hell of a show.

Vocal are kinda low but no doubt Matt Pike's amp rig was blaring at full blast and the front of house person was doing the best they could.  Convincing him to turn down so that the monitors could be heard was mission impossible.

Killer setlist of early songs and a Celtic Frost cover!!!   Enjoy.

Suburban Home 16th Anniversary @ 3 Kings Tavern, Denver CO, 2011-09-09&10

poster by Jupiter Visuals

These Suburban Home anniversary parties were always a real good time.  Always a fun group of folks and a great line up of the sort of punky americana rock bands that were mining that vein at the time. Thanks to Virgil for all of the many many good times over the years.

For the 16th Anniversary shows there was of course a stacked line up.  Night one features Joey Briggs,Shane Sweeney,Michael Dean Damron,Arliss Nancy,Have Gun Will Travel,Lenny And The Piss Poor Boys,& Two Cow Garage who played a set including covering all of The Lemonhead's It's A Shame About Ray album. Night two featured Lizzie Huffman,Micah Schnabel,Lenny Lashley’s Gang of One,Alone At 3AM,The Evening Rig,Tin Horn Prayer,& Two Cow Garage.

I presented some of this night as a "best of" mix that got featured in a Westword article.
Westword Article

That is still live on my blog is you would rather have the condensed version.
best-of-suburban-home-16th-anniversary

After finding out 3 Kings Tavern was closing I started posting various fantastic shows from there and it got me to thinking about the Suburban Home shows I saw there.  For the 16th I setup a mix of the mics I had on the ceiling and the soundboard feed.  I was really happy with how it turned out and this is one that my late friend Dan Utter helped post process after the shows.

Since I was keen on this one I tried to pick out an individual set to post.  Tin Horn Prayer is a great one.  Either of the Two Cow sets.  The Lenny and the Piss Poor Boys was a front runner.  Then I decided in this freewheeling digital age why not just post all of the sets in one big collection.  A digital box set of the event.

So here it is warts and all as I say.  People get loud, people get loose, people get real.  It's no bullshit or pretense.  All of these performances were from the heart.  Lot a love in that room both nights.  To quote the really drunk guy you can hear hollering at the very beginning of the Tin Horn Prayer set "You're all my friends!! Everybody here is my friend!!  Cheers buddy!!"

I had a lovely time listening back to all of these sets and in this crazy time where we don't even know when we will be even seeing live music in a setting like this it's been fun to reminisce over these two nights.  Hope you enjoy it as well.

In this crazy time where no bands can tour it would be a great time to support independent music and artists and go buy some of their stuff.  Many of the acts that played at this show are still active and can be found with a quick google search on bandcamp and other places.  Let's all help keep art and music alive until a time we can all come out an enjoy it together.

Cheers friends!!

The Dillinger Escape Plan @ Bluebird, Denver CO, 2002-10-13

This was the 2nd and last time I saw DEP before catching one of those insane Streets of London shows in 2017.  Sick band both live and their recorded catalog.  Not sure why it took me 15 years to catch them again.

I don't recall much about this show except that SHAT opened.  It was a full night of entertainment.

Great setlist on this one.  The play a version of Van Damsel before it appeared on Miss Machine.
Nice Aphex Twin cover and some songs from the recent Irony Is A Dead scene EP.  Fantastic show.

The Guidance @ 3 Kings Tavern, Denver CO, 2019-12-21

The Guidance opened up She Wants Revenge at 3 Kings Tavern at the end of 2019.  2 piece electronic dance music with a live drummer.  The main guy Stefan Pruett and the drummer both wore neon ski masks the whole set.  It was dancey but with a rock flavor.  Not me normal cup of tea but it was high energy and Stefan's interactions with the crowd and general fun positive vibe won me over enough that bought a shirt from him after their set.  It did hurt that there were skulls on it.

In one of his songs "She Like The Dance Music" he rattles off a bunch of DJs and band names to answer the question of 'What have you been listening to lately?'  in a way reminiscent of LCD Sound-system's song "Losing My Edge".  I got to talk with Stefan for a bit when I bought my shirt and talked to him about what I had been listening too at the time.  He was friendly personable dude and was more than happy to talk music with me.

Last month I heard that he passed away due to a heart condition.  There is some more info here.
https://www.azcentral.com/story/entertainment/music/2020/06/17/remembering-stefan-pruett-phoenix-musician-peachcake-the-guidance/3203749001/

When I saw the news I went back and listened to this recording and thought it sounded pretty good and Stefan's interactions with the crowd are kind of funny and sweet.  I figured maybe some of his friends or fans might enjoy hearing it.   So here you go.

Hot Snakes @ Tulagi, Boulder CO, 2002-08-26

I just saw a social media post about the long closed music venue Tulagi in Boulder is now a yoga studio.  Life moves on.  It was a fun room to see music in.  I guess they have gone from Hot Snakes to hot yoga.  Ba dump dump ding!!  I'll be here all week folks.  Be sure to tip the bartenders.

This was the first time I saw Hot Snakes.  They were on tour for their second album Suicide Invoice. Weird crowd I recall.  Some kid wanted to mosh but no one was into it.  I think he is the kid you can hear yelling "Warped Tour!!!"  over and over after Light Up The Stars.  Might have been the same guy who some one from the band crossly says "don't throw beer up here" to.

Get setlist with a full of songs from the 1st two albums.  Enjoy.

Supersuckers @ Bluebird Theater, Denver CO, 1999-04-23

This was the second show I every recorded.  The 1st was Smashing Pumpkins/Queens Of the Stone Age on 4/19.  The Queens set is posted on here but I botched the SP set.

So I was excited to give it another go.  It was a much more successful mission.

Arguably the Supersuckers at the height of their powers firing on all cylinders.

This is a fresh transfer form the master and if you have heard this before from the CDR trading days this now features 95% less of me yelling "Can Pipe".  Enjoy.

Dirty Rotten Imbeciles @ The Starlight, Ft Collins CO, 2001-02-25

Fun one from the way back machine.  D.R.I. live at the Starlight in Fort Collins Colorado back in February of 2001.  They came out and joined Denver's 8 Bucks Experiment for a string of western dates I recall.

Well past their heyday at this point I guess.  Their last album Full Speed Ahead came out in 1995.  D.R.I. is a timeless sort of punk band though.  Super memorable songs with killer riffs and lyrics.
I'll be a fan forever.

Hell of a setlist and a rowdy crowd at this one.  Long set too.  You can play a lot of D.R.I. songs in 76 minutes.  Enjoy.

Steve Earle @ Fox Theatre, Boulder CO, 2002-03-07

I hadn't listened to this in years and years.  I had forgotten what an amazing show this was.  Steve solo for just over 2 hours.  It's a Steve Earle master class.

He starts off with a great story and then into the songs.  Quite the song selection for this night too.  So many great tunes.  He waxes poetic more than a few times giving context to many of the songs.  I believe that this might be the first public performance of John Walker's Blues.  Steve intros it by talking about how he wasn't going to play it.

Amazingly quite and respectful crowd.  I was about 10 feet back from the front this night.  You can barely hear anyone but Steve during his songs.   In-between songs the cheers were deafening.  I took some extra time to really crank down the dbs in those areas to make this a much more enjoyable listen.  Really proud of this capture.  Enjoy.

New Bomb Turks @ Bluebird Theater, Denver CO, 2002-09-17

The New Bomb Turks are an amazing band.  Maybe a bit too punk for the rock n roll crowd and a bit to rock in roll for the punks.  Like a lot of bands on the late 90s early aughts circuit kicking around playing RAWK music.

Rock N Roll is such a generic genre umbrella it's funny to think that so much of it is underground stuff.  I guess the radio divide at the time separated the more main stream acts from the people down at the quarry mining the real rock nuggets.  Most people are more than happy to just listen to what ever is presented to them.  NBT were just not for that crowd.

This set at the Bluebird in Denver back in 2002 was during the beginning of a time when the city imposed a ridiculous 100db limit on the club because some folks that forgot they lived nearby, in the middle of the city, and right near busy Colfax, decided it was too loud and complained none stop.

Seriously the traffic is that loud.  My friend that worked there have stories of phone calls coming into the box office staying "the show is too loud you need to turn it down"  despite the fact no show was happening at the time.  Madness.

Practically ever band complained about it.  Rightfully so as it is pretty quite.  The venue didn't want to get fined so they kept it quite.   At the time it was a drag but in listening back to all these older recording from that era it might have help make a better house mix without everyone on stage just cranking up their amps to 10.

Front man Eric Davidson is in fine form this night with some ridiculous intro to some of the songs and it wouldn't be a Denver New Bomb Turks show if Eric didn't talk some shit to and about Denver band The La Donnas.   Good times.  Enjoy.
