Jesse Dayton @ Lion's Lair, Denver CO, 2001-12-12

I've been a big fan of Jesse Dayton since the late 90s.  I saw him a couple times at the Lion's Lair in 2001 were he played to a sparse crowd.  Fun shows for me but I'm not sure how stoked on the low turnout Jesse and the band were.  Still the delivered great sets with a mix of originals and covers.

We get to hear the George Jones song "Grand Tour" twice.  Towards the end of the set one of the Lion's Lair owners and long time Denver show promotor Doug Kauffman requested to hear it again and offered Jesse $20 to play it again.  Jesse agrees to do it saying "and that is why they call it the music business and not the music friends".

Jesse had gone on to do a bunch of albums since this show and ever directed a zombie movie.  He currently has a very well received blues album that he did with Samantha Fish and has be touring a ton behind it.   Love to see it as I celebrate his entire catalog.

Sound on this is pretty good but there is a fair amount of room atmosphere in there too. I've enjoyed revisiting it.

Prong @ Bluebird Theatre, Denver CO, 2002-05-11

Here is a 2002 set from New Your band Prong.  At this point their last album was 1996's Rude Awakening.  They did release an album called Scorpio Rising in 2003.  We get to hear a few songs from that on this night.  A bunch of songs from Cleansing get played and a few deep cuts.

I've been a fan since the Force Feed / Beg To Differ era.  I don't recall who opened this show at all.  I can't find a flyer and Prong is the only set I recorded this night.   I have been thinking about posting this show for a week or so and in a fun coincidence Prong just announced a tour with Voivod that is going to be coming to Denver in 2024.   That should be a great show.  Long tine Voivod fan too I like the pairing with Prong.

This was around the time of the Bluebird being hit with a bunch of bullshit noise violations from people who didn't realize they lived in the middle of a noise city.  So they had to keep it under 100 decibels so I think the recording sounds a bit quiet.  Still a pretty good mix and the vocals a clear.  Enjoy.

Mario Lalli and The Rubber Snake Charmers @ HQ, Denver CO, 2022-09-16

I'm always down for a Mario Lalli project.  Quite the line up of heavy hitter desert rock guys in the band.  They say that this is improvised an set with Sean Wheeler singing and speaking over the music.  Nick adds some background touches and Mario chimes in a bit too.  They have played this out for a bit and I have heard a recording of an Australian show from November of 2022, and a few on YT,  and it is pretty similar.  Which makes sense to have pinned it down a little bit over time but still can stretch it out as they feel.

I saw on Discogs that there is a MLATRSC live cassette out that has names for four acts of the performance but I haven't heard it to know how it is divided.  So I named each part of the performance based on the title of the cassette "Forgetting Out Loud (Folklore From The Other Desert Cities)".

The Denver performance is divided by Nick taking over on vocals and singing a cover he's know for.  Roky Erickson's "Bloody Hammer".  Then they go back into the Forgetting Out loud set.  The November 2022 set I have heard doesn't include the cover and goes on for another 20 minutes almost.

Some of what Sean Wheeler is performing comes from an art book that he did with Bad Otis Link called "Dry Heat".  There is a an album that Sean did with Aldo Struyf that is a complete performance of what is illustrated in the book it appears.  I have no idea if it sounds anything like MLATRSC.  I kind of doubt it and I want to track down a copy of that vinyl.    During this set and others I have seen videos of Sean has a copy of the book on stage with him that he referenced on occasion.

Fun short set as a warm up for the STÖNER headlining set.  Enjoy.

Civic @ Hi Dive, Denver CO, 2023-10-14

Civic is an Australian punk rock band that formed in 2017.  They sound a bit like their fellow country men Radio Birdman with a mix of Iggy and the Stooges.  A bit of a darker menacing edge.  Their new album 'Take By Force' has been in almost constant rotation since it came out earlier this year.  So catchy and rocking.  It was also produced by Radio Birdman's Rob Younger.

I was super stoked to see that they were coming to my favorite room in Denver the Hi Dive.  On a weekend too so even better.  On the bill as well were locals Cleaner and Public Opinion.  Both played great sets.

Civic treated us to lots of tracks from the new album but the setlist spanned their entire catalog.  Such  a high energy and fun show.  Certainly in the running for show of the year for me.  Looking forward to hearing more from these guys and hopefully seeing them again someday.  It sounds like they had a really nice time touring the US based on an interview I read recently.   Check them out on bandcamp and support them and all independent artists.  It's hard work and most aren't getting rich pursuing what they love.

Love the sound in the Hi Dive and this one didn't disappoint either.  Turned out really nice I think.  Enjoy.

Warthog @ Hi Dive, Denver CO, 2022-11-05

Warthog is a New York hardcore band that has been active for about 10 years.  It leans to the heavier side which is why I probably like it.   I first saw them at the last Psycho Vegas show on the recommendation of my friends that are way more into hardcore than I am.  I was sold after seeing them live.

Last year they came out for the Hi Dive's 20th anniversary shows.  That weekend was a hell of a good time.  I already posted up the Spits set from the day before.

I think this sounds really good and was a fun show.  Enjoy.

NIN & Soundgarden @ Red Rocks, Morrison CO, 2014-07-22

Been thinking about my friend Bill that recorded these shows lately.  He wasn't well when I saw him last and I haven't been able to reach him lately.  I hope he is ok and maybe sees this and reaches out.

I bought my MBHO rig from Bill and went to and recorded a fair amount of shows with the man.  Bill could pull a great recording.  He was active in the 90s through the early 2010s.

He captured this fantastic double bill of Soundgarden and Nine Inch Nails at Red Rocks Amphitheater back in 2014.  It can be tough to record at Red Rocks with the shifting winds sometimes.  This sounded like a calm night.  Great sets from both bands.

I know that the NIN shows are out in circulation.  The Soundgarden maybe not so much.
Bill had sent me his WAV files back in 2014.  I didn't alter those but I did fresh tracking a tagging on the file set.  Enjoy.

Caspar Brötzmann Massaker @ Cat's Cradle, Carrboro NC, 1995-03-15

It's been awhile since I posted a recording from the Lantz Barbour tape collection.  This is one that I found super interesting when I first transferred it back in 2018 but I didn't know much about the guy and it sounded like tracking might be hard to do.   Turns out it wasn't so hard as there are only 5 songs on this recording.

For some background.  If you haven't heard of Caspar Brötzmann  maybe you have heard of his father Peter Brötzmann.  Peter is a well know figure in Europe free jazz know mostly for this saxophone playing.

Caspar started his band Massaker in the 80s and it is rooted in the rock trio format of guitar, bass, and drums. Very discordant, heavy, textural, expansive stuff.  Live in person I bet it was an experience.
For some context this show in North Carolina was part of a tour that they did in 1995 with Killdozer.

I don't have that Killdozer recording but it's out there.

I think this sounds really good considering the gear and how loud it had to have been.  A little chatty between songs but not bad.  I trimmed as much as a could so there are some fade in and outs between some songs.  Enjoy.

The Dwarves @ Lion's Lair, Denver CO, 2004-11-20

I had a request for a trade for this show recently.  I hadn't listened to it since I recorded it probably.  I had it listed as being at the Bluebird, but upon listening it sure didn't sound like the Bluebird.  Then I did a little search and found this Khun poster and remembered that this was another Dwarves Lion's Lair show.

The Dwarves are releasing a new "concept" album soon.  If the songs are about, drugs, sex, and how great Blag / The Dwarves are then it doesn't sound like much a a departure from any of their other albums.  This new one is supposed to have songs from multiple musical genres.  I'm looking forward to hearing it.

They are also opening up for Bad Religion at the big Mission Ballroom in Denver tonight.  I'm tempted to go but I'm not sure that is going to happen.  Would be a fun show no doubt.

Sound is pretty decent and there is a lot of crowd interaction right up front.  The setlist is chock full of the hits too.  Fun night from what I can recall about it almost 20 year out.  Enjoy.

Acid King @ Hi Dive, Denver CO, 2018-09-11

I've seen Acid King multiple times over the years. They are right in my wheelhouse with their heavy stoner rock sound.  Love this kind of stuff especially live.  Acid King always delivers.

This show was from back in the carefree days of 2018.  Their last album before this show had been 2015's 'Middle Of Nowhere, Center Of Everywhere'.  A bunch of songs from that get played.

This recording is another great example of why I love the Hi Dive for heavy music.  Really pleased with the sound on this one.  Enjoy.

Lydia Loveless @ Globe Hall, Denver CO, 2021-11-11

Here is a Lydia Loveless show from the fall of 2021 at Globe Hall.  She played 2 nights with Lilly Hyatt.  I only went to the second show and it was so good I was kicking myself for missing the first one.   I sat on this one since then because she played a bunch of new song that she hadn't released at the time.

Her new album "Nothing's Gonna Stand in My Way Again" just came out last Friday with all 3 of those new songs she played on it.    It's really really good and if you're a fan you should go check it out.  She has it up on Bandcamp and there are vinyl copies from Bloodshot records. I'm a huge fan and celebrate her entire catalog.  She just announced a bunch of tour dates and has a show in Denver in February.

As always support independent music and artists anyway you can.

I think this turned out really nice and have listened to it a bunch of times since I recorded it in 2021.
I hope you enjoy.

Kittie @ Fillmore, Denver CO, 2001-01-24

I was going to get around to posting this one whenever but after I posted the Fear Factory from the same night I got a request for the Kittie set so I figured why not.

Looked like they were playing the same set every night on this SnoCoreRock tour.  At least according to setlist fm.  So I hope it's correct.  I didn't double check.

Like the FF set I was surprised upon revisiting this so many years later that it is pretty listenable.  Especially for being in the Fillmore.  That big barn is just going to sound like a big barn to some degree.  I enjoyed listening back while I was working on this one.  Enjoy.

Cave In @ Gothic Theatre, Englewood CO, 2023-05-28

It's been a fantastic year for seeing live music in Denver.  So many great tours and shows happing.  More than anyone could even hope to see.  Earlier this year the Yob / Cave In tour stopped at the Gothic.  I try to never miss Yob and I had never seen Cave In before.  Added bonus of locals Dreadnought being on the bill too.

I loved Cave In's last album album Heavy Pendulum a lot but they didn't come to Denver in 2022 on the tour the did supporting it.  So this was a not to be missed show.  Day of the stars aligned and I ran into a solid crew of buddies around the corner.  Hung with them for a bit and we headed to the show.  Which was one of the best I've seen this year.  Super stacked lineup for this show.

The Gothic always sounds pretty good so I was happy with how this turned out.  Enjoy.

Secret Chiefs 3 @ Bluebird Theatre, Denver CO, 2000-05-24

This was mine and most people in Denvers first time seeing Secret Chiefs 3.  They had played in California and done an Australian tour in 1998 but I believe that 2000 was the first time they actively were playing shows in the US.  Setlist FM lists this Denver show at the 1st date on the 2000 tour but I've no way to verify that.  It took until 2017 for me to see them again after this.

I had shared this out on CDR back in the aughts CDR trading days but this is a new transfer from the my MD master.  So this I hope is an upgrade from that.  Newly tracked at tagged.  Sounds really nice I think and the crowd is pretty quite and respectful during the mellow parts. Enjoy.

Fear Factory @ Fillmore, Denver CO, 2001-01-24

Here is one from awhile back.  Fear Factory headlining the SnoCore Rock tour back in 2001. They were just about to release their Digimortal album and played a few songs from it.  I was a fan from the first album and had seen them a few times already.

At sometime in the mid 90s I took my little daughter to Angelo's Records up on 120th and Colorado to a Fear Factory signing event.  They were real nice and signed my Graphics Bongs bicycle jersey and my green vinyl promo copy of Brujeria's - Marijuana 7 inch single.  The secret was out that Dino had played on some of the Brujeria recordings.  I wish I never sold that record.

Kittie, The Union Underground, and Boy\Hits/Car played as well.  The poster says Slaves On Dope were on the bill too but I have no recollection or recording of their set.

Sound on this isn't bad.  Vocals are pretty clear through out.  Mix is a little muddy but that is the Fillmore for you.  Enjoy.

The Spits @ Hi Dive, Denver CO, 2022-11-04

The Spits are so much fun.  I love seeing this band.  Colorado doesn't get a lot of chances.  Before this it had been 10 years since they were here.   Also at the Hi Dive.  So it made sense that they would play the Hi Dive's 20th anniversary shows.

The Spits aren't an encore kind of band but since you can't get "backstage" from the stage at the Hi Dive.  You either walk off or play some more.  We got some more songs on this night.  Great show.  Sounds really nice I think too.  Enjoy.

Cheap Trick @ Ball Arena, Denver CO, 2023-08-01

Here is the Cheap Trick opening set from the Rod Stewart show last week.  I had never seen Cheap Trick for some reason despite being a fan since childhood in the 70/80s.   I can't remember where I first heard them but I had a copy of the 1980 single " Everything Works If You Let It / Way Of The World" and I remember them being on the soundtrack to the 1979 coming of age movie "Over The Edge".

Over The Edge deserves a little side note.  This is a pretty wild movie that was filmed in Colorado.  Location were up in Greeley for the school scenes and down by Cherry Creek Reservoir for the rest.  Great rock n roll sound track and some fun rowdy dialog that I loved as a kid.  Matt Dylan's first movie roll as well.

As expected Cheap Trick's set is mostly all the hits but we get a song from their 2021 album even.  Fun show and I would see them again for sure.  Now I just need a time machine to go back and see them in their heyday.   Enjoy.

Rod Stewart @ Ball Arena, Denver CO, 2023-08-01

This was my second time seeing Rod Stewart.  I caught him in the early aughts when he did an "evening with" at the same hockey arena.    That time he did two sets.  One of songs from the great American songbook.  The second set was all of his hits.

This time he brought Cheap Trick along and just played an all hits set.  Fun night.  Didn't expect him to have just a wild projection light show.   Hell of a production.

Pretty happy how this turned out so I wanted to share it sooner rather than later.  Enjoy
