Jon Snodgrass & Buddies @ Ratio Beerworks, Denver CO, 2024-07-05

 

I've been a fan of Jon Snodgrass since the early aughts when I first saw Drag The River.  I worked backwards from their into the Armchair Martian catalog.  I saw Drag The River a whole lot over the years.  I am such a big fan we were going to have them play our wedding in 2008 but they broke up for awhile before hand so it never happened.  I did see them play at friends wedding a few years later.

I had already been planning on going to this Punk Rock Saves Lives benefit show anyway.  The line up was really great with Jon Snodgrass, Chad Price from Drag The River and All's new band The Chad Price Peace Coalition, SPELLS, Venomous Pinks, 1876, Middle Age Queers, and a some others.  Really fun day for a good cause.

Jon had messaged me the night before asking if I was coming out.  I said yes and he said "bring your tape recorder thingy, I think your going to want to capture something special tomorrow".  I thought that maybe him and Chad might play some songs together.  Wasn't sure.  Turn out Jon was joined at the end of his solo set by Greg Norton of Hüsker Dü fame for a set of Hüsker Dü songs!!!  Fun times for the small crowd that was their early.

I think this turned out pretty nice thanks to the tall umbrella that I used as a wind break and mic stand.

Too Tall Dan Blowing Some Harmonica. R.I.P. Dan Utter

Not a post that I wanted to make for sure.  It's been a few months since Dan passed and he is very much missed by myself and his many friends and family.  He was a big presence and won't soon be forgotten.

I tried to get started on this compilation of Dan sitting in with various people not long after he passed but it was just to hard to revisit those memories at the time.  This weekend it felt like it was time and I enjoyed hearing my old friend do one of the things he loved the most.  Playing the harmonica.

He was a friendly gregarious dude so he had gotten to know a lot of musicians over the years.  He got to sit in and blow harp with lots and lots of people.  This small comp doesn't even scratch the surface.  I went though my archive of live recordings and pulled out what I though were some nice sounding examples of Dan doing his thing.  Even if you didn't know my friend Dan there are some nice tracks here with Jon Snodgrass from Drag The River, Cory Branan, Michael Dean Dameron, Bryan Hartley, and Lenny Lashley.  Enjoy.

The Revival Tour @ The Marquis, Denver CO 2008-10-23

Chuck Ragan took this first incarnation of the Revival tour out on the road in fall of 2008.  Chuck was joined on the tour at this date by Ben Nichols of Lucero, Tim Barry of Avail, Austin Lucas, Jon Snodgrass of Drag The River, Todd Beene, Jon Gaunt, & Digger Barne.  All artist who are doing their own modern take on folk music.  Each of the musicians took turns playing their own sets and continuously joined each other on stage through out the night.

This show was a monster.  Clocking in at over 3 hours of non-stop music.  That is a long show.  More then drifting into jam bad territory length.  I recall that while the show was going on it didn't seem that long.  Just one entertaining moment after the next.

Micah Schnabel (Two Cow Garage) Chad Price (Drag The River) Jon Snodgrass (Drag The River) , Hi Dive, Denver, CO 2009-11-29

They had 3 bar stools and three mic stands set up on stage and Micah, Jon, and Chad all took the stage together for a little folk singer in the round style action.  They took turns singing songs solo and singing with each other.  It was a really fun night and they all seemed to be in high spirits.  Jon  especially.

Unfortunately I had a little trouble with my recording.  Not sure if it was a loose/bad cable on stage or possibly a staticy pot or fader on the board.  The result being that some songs were just overcome with static and feedback and are lost forever.  I think this represents about 80% of the set so I was able to rescue a great portion of it.  Some of the tracks have a lite static in them, mostly at the beginning of the the track, but most of them sound great.  Anyway I hope you enjoy the tunes.  Myself I cant stop singing Spiderman Wolfman.
