Power Trip @ Marquis Theater, Denver CO, 2014-06-21

Ugh!!  Enough 2020.  I don't want to be doing any more memorial posts this year.

Riley Gale of the amazing band Power Trip recently passed away at the way too young age or 34.
A real bummer.  That guy was a force of nature and will be greatly missed by many.

This is a show that I have never shared before.  It is Power Trip's appearance at the 2nd anniversary party for Trve Brewery.  An killer metal themed brewery in Denver Colorado.  They have consistently put on super fun anniversary shows every year.  Except this year for obvious reasons.

Power Trip headlined after a bunch of slower doom bands.  Including Khemmis and Bongripper.  So when they brought the loud fast rules to the stage people went off.

Rest In Power Riley.

Church Of Misery @ Hi Dive, Denver CO, 2013-12-08

This show was a bruiser.  We started off the night with Khemmis.  They had just released their first EP about a month before this show.  This was an early show and they have gone on to greater heights.

Then Denver doom merchants Deer Creek who always deliver the goods.

Ending with the mighty mighty Church of Misery.  I had never seen them before and they blew me away.  They crazy doom boogie thing they do is so fantastic.  The song subject matter scares off most people before they ever hear a note of the music.  Which is a shame because they are missing out on some magic.

Love the way loud metal sounds in the Hi Dive.  Always a top notch FOH person running sound. This night was no different.  I forget who was behind the board but they nailed it and Love how this turned out.

All the "hits" as it where and blasting it out at the end with a cover of Saint Vitus's War Is Our Destiny.

Never miss seeing this band if you get a chance.  Enjoy.

The Dragons @ Lion's Lair, Denver CO, 2002-03-02

While I'm down at the mine chiseling away looking for the rock nuggets I uncovered this gem.  The fantastic rock n roll band from San Diego The Dragons live at the Lion's Lair back in 2002.  I had forgotten what a killer show this was.  I guess that happens when you have seen so many shows.

They were on tour sponsored by Gearhead Records with Demons from Sweden.  I'll try to get their set posted up sometime too.  Pure rock in roll fun from that start to the end.

The Lion's Lair is a really small room.  Approximately 100 person capacity.  Back when this show happened the stage was literally right behind the bar.  If you got one of the 20 or so barstools you had a front row seat with bar service.  It was pretty amazing.    Later this year they moved the stage to the front corner of the room.  Behind the windows under the Lair part of the sign.

It still remained a great intimate room to see live music.  Fingers crossed it makes it through this fucking pandemic.

This Dragons recording was made from one of those previously mentioned bar stools.  So it's loud and direct.  Pretty clear vocals and instruments.  Not a lot of bar noise but it is what it is.  Warts and all.  You can only barely hear me order a round of drinks around the mid point.

Hell of a setlist too.  If you don't know the Dragons and this is your introduction your getting a greatest hits set here with some col covers.   The called it quits a few years after this show in 2005.

They have two albums up for sale on the Gearhead bandcamp page.  Go support these bands and labels anyway you can in this crazy time.

Enjoy.

Honky, Danko Jones, Nashville Pussy, Supersuckers @ Bluebird Theater, Denver CO, 2005-11-12

I'm putting these recording up in honor of Ron Heathman who recently passed away.  R.I.P. Ron.

I saw the Supersuckers many, many, many, times and they were consistently kicking ass and were nice approachable dudes.  They were also always very open to me throwing up some mics and recording their shows.  Thanks for the hospitality Supersuckers.  I always appreciated it.

This was a Rock N Roll extravaganza in every sense of the word.  Four killer, road tight, bands coming to Denver on a Saturday night to raise some hell.  And that is what they did.  From Honky kicking it off with 'Smokin' Weed With Helios Creed' to the last notes of the Supersucker's 'Born With A Tail'.  Ass kicking rock and roll all night!  Man the aughts were the heyday for this scene.  So many good shows.

I miss seeing live shows a lot.  The performers are missing it too no doubt.  So if you dig this also go support all of these bands online.  They would be out road dogging it to bring you the tunes right now if they could.  So go hit up their sites and buy a new shirt or some vinyl to help em' out.  Might be awhile before we can do that in person like the good ol' days.  Any lovers of live music please look into how you can help your local venues and artists as well.  We will all get through this together.

The Bluebird and Supersuckers were very accommodating to me back then.  I think I ran a 12 foot mic stand for this.  Also one of the early times that I ran the MBHO / JK Labs rig.  I've always loved the recordings that combo made.  So I think these sound pretty damn good.  I hope you Enjoy.

Detroit Cobras @ The Lion's Lair, Denver CO, 2002-10-25&26

Here are a pair of rowdy Detroit Cobras shows from 2002.  They were in town to help celebrate the 10th anniversary of the (Worlds Famous) Lion's Lair.  Oh what a treat it would be to see some music there right now.

If your unfamiliar Detroit Cobras is a band started by Rachel Nagy & Mary Ramirez and has had a ton of other members on their albums and tours.  I can't recall who the other band members at this show were.

They play a soul infused garage rock.  Mostly uptempo be they have a few slow torch song numbers too.  The have a deserved rep and a rough and tumble rock n roll outfit.

At this show Rachel is very chatty with a lot to say about the crowd and Denver.  Fun stuff.

Night one is an audience mics capture and night two is a recording from the soundboard.
Both have their charms and are a fun listen I think.  Enjoy.

Old 97s @ Fox Theatre, Boulder CO, 2001-10-05

I was a bit late to the Old 97s party.  I remember hearing their song 'Salome' on Radio 1190 in the late 90s and loving it.  I was just starting to dig into alt.country/cowpunk/american bands around then.  Recall picking up Too Far To Care or maybe Fight Songs soon after.  Been a fan ever since.

Did see them live until the tours for the Satellite Rides album.  The first time I attempted to catch them was at Tulagi in March of 2001.  Due to completely avoidable events in retrospect I missed all of their set except for the encore.  Which was amazing.

So I think this set from October of 2001 is my first complete show.  90+ minute set and tons of great songs.  I always appreciated how they would mix it up night after night.  And they have so many good songs no way they can play them all.

'The Other Shoe" is eliminated from this recording because I went to take a piss and get a drink.
There was an initial encore break after 'Big Brown Eyes' but I used that opportunity to swap out minidiscs so there is no recorded break in that place.

I know I traded this out on CDR back at the start of the aughts.  This version has all of me yelling out "Time Bomb!!" eliminated.  Some other minor edits and tweaks.  I consider this an upgrade to that CDR version.

Enjoy

Snapcase @ Adams County Fairgrounds, Brighton CO, 2000-07-09

How about some more 2000 Warped Tour.  I only got a handful of set that here.  I think again not based on desire to record but limits on physical media.  I only had so many blank mini discs.  So I had to pick and choose.   A few post back I put up the Lunachicks set.

Today how about Snapcase!!  I have always been sort of a hardcore tourist.  I like a lot of it especially the more metal or crossover sounds.  Snapcase always fit that bill for me.  They are heavy and dissonant while being catchy.  Also not draped in all the tough guy trappings that hardcore often has.

Vocals are pretty clear on this.  Like I've said before recording outdoors can be tricky.  Music is abit phasey here and there.  Some of that is the weather and some of that is be dodging what I recall was a giant mosh pit.  Ah memories.  Enjoy

Tomahawk @ Ogden Theatre, Denver CO, 2001-11-28

Here is a Tomahawk show from 2001.  Mike Patton was a busy guy after Faith No More broke up.  He started Fantomas and recorded and album and toured behind it in 1999.  Not long after that he met Duane Denison from Jesus Lizard and they started a corroboration on what became Tomahawk.  They were joined but John Stanier from Helmet and Kevin Rutmanis from Cows & Melvins.  Quite a paring of underground alternative music dudes.

I've been a big Patton fan since he came on my radar through FNM.  The band roster for Tomahawk certainly peaked my interest.  I was not disappointed when I heard their debut 2001 album.  So of course catching them on tour was a no brainer.

DJ Swamp opened up which was neat I guess.  What happened to that guy?  The crowd was there to see Tomahawk though.  I can't recall if there wasn't a positive reaction from the crowd but we only got a 47 minute set with no encores.  According to Setlist.fm other cities got encores with 2 or 3 songs.

Patton doesn't usually talk a whole lot but on this night way before marijuana was legalized he goes on a "are you high Denver"  spiel.   Then before the last song he asks if the crowd is having a good time.  Then suggest that perhaps they should go see System Of A Down next door (at the Fillmore), then he says "excuse me fuck them".  Then he says 'Slayer is coming next door!!"  the crowd cheers " yeah yeah yeah you're 10 years too late Denver".  And suggests Slayer with out Dave Lombardo is not as good.

There has been talk for years of another Tomahawk album seeing the light of day.  I would be into that.
Until then enjoy this 2001 set.

The Road Kings @ Fox Theatre, Boulder CO, 1999-11-16

My entry into Jesse Dayton fandom had to have begun with his involvement with the band Supersuckers.  He played on their country album Must've Been High.  Not long after I heard that album I picked up his first solo country album Raisin' Cain.

Outlaw country music of this sort was a staple in my house growing up.  Of course since my Mom liked it I had to rebel and get into all of the 80's rock and metal.  But I had heard all of those Waylon and Willie records and enjoyed them until I thought I was too cool.   So the music Jesse was making on that album was right up my alley while I was coming back around to those sounds.

He didn't get out of Texas much so I didn't see him with his country band until 2001.  I did catch him with his rockabilly band Road Kings when the opened up for Mike Ness at the Fox in Boulder Colorado.  Jesse is a dam fine guitar player so no mater what music style he is playing it's kick ass.

Now I don't think I could choose which I like better even.  I celebrate the man's entire catalog.
