Dead Pioneers @ Bobcat Club, Denver CO, 2023-06-17

Indigenous artist Gregg Deal started Dead Pioneers as an off shoot of another performance piece he was doing called “The Punk Pan-Indian Romantic Comedy”.  He talks about that history on track 3.

For the debut album they recorded in Ft Collins they recruited Abe Brennan from Joy Subtraction to play lead guitar.  Abe handles all of the guitar at this show.

To quote their bio "Dead Pioneers is rooted in creating and performing a sound heavily influenced by the punk aesthetic with an edge built on a First Peoples perspective and not afraid to tackle hard political and social issues, standing in solidarity of Indigenous rights, Black rights, Brown rights, Asian rights, Gay rights, Trans rights, Workers rights and beyond."  It's punk rock as fuck.

A bit of a stripped down lineup but they kicked ass I thought.  The was a hella fun show.  Watch for these guys and see them live if you get a chance.

The Bottle Rockets @ Lion's Lair, Denver CO, 2004-02-25

Been a big fan of the Bottle Rockets since the mid 90s when I heard the albums  "24 Hours A Day " and "The Brooklyn Side".  I had never seen them before this 2004 show though.  And never again as it turns out.  The Lion's Lair was a perfect place to see them for the first time.  My buddies in the Foggy Mountain Fuckers opened up the show.

Brian Henneman was plagued with technical issues that effected his guitar mix oddly at the beginning of the set in a few places.  Him and the Lion's Lair sound guy try a few things to get it fixed to no avail.  The band had gone off the road in Wyoming the night before.  No one got hurt and the van remained upright but Brian thinks maybe one of his pedals got damaged in the indecent.  He removes it from the chain and soldiers on.  Mid set he realizes that the problem all along was a loose outlet on the Lion's Lair stage.  He is so happy.  The band handled it like the pros they are.

I did edit out multiple minutes in between some songs at the beginning of the set while they were  working it out.  No one needed to hear that.  Brian was very frustrated.  That was the big reason I sat on this for so long.  I didn't want to post up someone having their worst day.    After being on a Bottle Rockets vinyl kick recently I decided to revisit this and loved the performance and was surprised at how much I liked the board mix I captured.  Not all vocals and kick drum.  Lots of guitar up in the mix and even if they were having a bad day they play the hell out of these songs.  Amazing 24 song setlist.  Wow!  I figured 20 years was long enough to sit on this.  Enjoy.

Melvins @ Bluebird Theatre, Denver CO, 1999-07-10

I shared the Boulder Fox Theater Melvins show from July 7th 1999 a while back.  This is the first time sharing the July 10th 1999 show from the Bluebird.

They were touring behind Bootlicker with Kevin Rumantis bass.  I think the Boulder show sounds better.  This one is a little hot on the loud parts.  Very listenable though.  It is what it is.

Pike Vs The Automaton @ HQ, Denver CO, 2023-08-06

I've seen Matt Pike in High On Fire at some small venues over the years.  These days both Sleep and HOF are playing in much bigger venues.  So it was a nice treat to get to see Matt Pike up-close on a small stage.  This time with his side project Pike Vs The Automaton.

They put out an album in 2022.  Matt can't help sounding like himself so there are similarities to his other bands but enough of a different flavor to sound fresh.

Not a surprise they kickass live.  A bunch of songs from the album and a W.A.S.P. cover!!  Fun.

Possessed by Paul James @ Hi Dive, Denver CO, 2023-06-08

I've seen Possessed by Paul James multiple times over the years and he is always so good.  I guess it's folk blues for lack of a better description.  He's got a big powerful voice and plays several different instruments through out.  No setlist worked off of hollered requests or what he was feeling.  I yelled out for "Take Off Your Mask" and he plays it late in the set and remarks that he hadn't played it forever.

He had his young son along with him on tour.  Sitting there at the merch table while his dad was playing.   Konrad speaks too him, and about him, during the set.  I thought it was really charming and funny.  He didn't seem to mortified.

Sounds really nice I think.  It's a bar show so there is some side chatter and what not but powerful performance through out.  He is so humble and nice he apologizes for only playing an 85 minute jam packed requests set for us.  It was the perfect amount.

Go find Possessed by Paul James, and other independent artist that you enjoy, and support their art.  Buy their stuff.  Go see them live.  Go Do Some Good.

Enjoy.

The Living End @ Warped Tour, Denver CO, 1999-07-11

I've posted a few of these 99 Warped Tour sets on here before.   I remember seeing this guys and really liking it.  Never saw them again.  I heard their first alum pop into my random mix last week and it brought me back.   Sadly it looks like I walked in late for this one and only captured 2 songs.

The sound pretty good though so I figured I would post them up.  Enjoy.

Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs @ Hi Dive, Denver CO, 2024-02-20

Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs from the UK came through Denver last month on their first US tour.  They have a self admitted terrible band name.  One that isn't particularly descriptive of their music.  It's just heavy rock to keep it simple.  Leaning into stonery doom and psych rock too.  I've been listening on and off for a few years now and I liked it. But just like with a lot of bands seeing it live really all brings it into focus.  They certainly deliver in a live setting and I would totally see them again if they come back.

I like how this sounds.  Love the Hi Dive.  Enjoy.

Supersuckers @ Bluebird Theatre, Denver CO, 2000-10-18

Here is another 2000 show from the way back machine.  This time a rocking 'Evil Powers Of Rock N Roll' era Supersuckers show.  Original lineup still in tack at this point.  The self proclaimed to be "the greatest rock n roll band in the world"  and it was hard to argue with that in the early aughts.

This show also featured Streetwalkin' Cheetahs and Amazing Royal Crowns.

The Supersuckers tried to raffle off a date with an unspecified band member on this night to an unclear end.  After the fake encore the announce that the winner is a woman named Kathy Tate and she doesn't come forward.  Then the band dedicates a cover of Turbonegro's "Get It On" to her.  Note sure if she ever showed up to accept her prize.

A bit of a rowdy crowd on this one but I think it still sounds pretty good.  Enjoy.

New Bomb Turks @ Bluebird Theater, Denver CO, 2000-06-22

This was my first time seeing New Bomb Turks I think.  My first time recording them for sure.  They headlined a bonkers lineup along with Zeke and The Streetwalkin' Cheetahs!!  Rawk and Roll!!

I've posted the Zeke set before   HERE

New Bomb Turks were on tour for the 2000 release Nightmare Scenario but they play songs from all across their catalog and a few fun covers.  Eric has some good stage banter through out.  At one point calling La Donnas the best band to ever come out of Denver.  And then later questioning their fortitude after the had warned the NBT about drinking at altitude.  What a fantastic rock n roll show this was.

Mix is a little muddy but vocals are clear through out.  Enjoy.

The Pleasure Barons, Live in Vancouver Canada, 1989-02-25

The Pleasure Barons were a "super" group comprised of Country Dick Montana, Mojo Nixon, and Dave Alvin.  With a wide range of guests including John Doe occasionally.  The put out one album and toured twice in 1989 and 1993.   It's big band Las Vegas revue style show. Performing their own songs and choice covers.

This is not my recording.  I got this in a CDRs for cassettes trade from someone calling themselves Turtle Music in the early aughts.  I've been on a cassette digitizing kick lately and I saw this Pleasure Barons soundboard from 1989 in the box and I pulled it out and put it in the to be transferred pile.

Months later I went to play it and the tape broke off the spindle.  I opened it up and discovered that the tape leader had just broken off of the spindle thank goodness.  So I carefully reconnected the tape back to the spindle and it played perfectly.  Sound is really nice too.

It's just labeled as a SBD but it feels a little more produced than just a board feed.  I can't find any information about this show online.    In the middle there is a skit with Country Dick performing a wedding ceremony between Mojo and an unknown lucky lady.  It sounds like it's from TV based on the bummer at the end and then there is part of an interview with Mojo.  Then it is back to the show.

I was working on this when I heard the news that Mojo had passed.  I was just going to split it up for myself since someone had already posted it to the LMA.  That one wasn't tracked out properly so i figured what the hell I might as well post it too.  RIP Mojo.

Dead Congregation @ Hi Dive, Denver CO, 2023-04-16

Long running Greek death metal juggernaut Dead Congregation came though Denver in the Spring of 2023 on a rare US tour.  It was not to be missed.  Following my rule of prioritizing seeing bands that have come from a long way away.  Also on the bill this night was Black Curse, Predatory Light and Many Blessing.

I love seeing metal at the Hi Dive.  Really happy with how this turned out.  If setlist fm is to be believed Denver got treated to some songs that I didn't see listed in other cities.  Hell of a great show.

Go support independent artist and venues any way you can.  Enjoy.
