Black Lamb @ Bluebird, Denver CO, 2002-10-31

I'm going to wrap up the October posts with a show I saw on Halloween.  With as many shows as I have seen and recorded I was thinking there had to be a few that I recorded on 10/31 but it turns out I only have one.

Back in 2002 I caught Black Lamb, Bleed, and Zen Guerrilla at the Bluebird on a cold Halloween night.   I had seen Zen Guerrilla before an thought they were killer but on this night it was a bit of a train wreck.  I don't think I will be sharing that one with the wider world.  I don't remember a thing about Bleed so I decided to post a long time favorite of mine Black Lamb.

Listening back to this I think the stole the show.  They were sounding tight and heavy.  Looking good in their rock star Halloween costumes.  Riffs upon riffs upon riffs.  Black Lamb was top of their class in Denver hard rock back then.  So good.

So here is their Halloween set from 2002 that me and my friend Chapper recorded.  Enjoy.

R.I.P. @ Hi Dive, Denver CO, 2017-06-16

Here is another perfect band for my October theme.  R.I.P. from Portland OR.  I guess it's doom metal but it leans into NWOBHM sounds a bit too.  They are one of those bands who while being serious about what they are doing they don't take themselves too seriously as to drain all the fun out of it.

When they came on stage at this show the singer comes on stage and says "We're R.I.P., We came down from Portland to dig your fucking grave!!"  He has a big scythe for a mic stand.  They all dress the metal part.  Heavy catchy songs about going to hell, caskets, graves, street drugs, and black leather.

Live they are a lot of fun.  This was my first time seeing them back in the summer of 2017 at the Electric Funeral Fest.  They came back again the next year too.

As always if you dig this go support the artists I post on here and lets help keep independent music alive for the future when we can go out and see shows again together.  R.I.P. have a great new album out called Dead End on Riding Easy Records.  Go pick that shit up.  It's fucking rad.

Zillion Dollar Sadists @ Larimer Lounge, Denver CO, 2004-10-30

Looking for shows for my October theme this one popped up.  I don't think I have any shows actually recorded on Halloween so this is as close as it gets.

This was a fun night with a bunch of friends 16 years ago.  Man time flies.

It's a little bit off the rails but like I said I thought it was a fun listen upon revisiting it.  Good sing alongs to all your favorite death punk songs.  Enjoy.

Immortal Lee County Killers @ Larimer Lounge, Denver CO, 2003-08-01

Immortal Lee County Killers is a duo fronted by Chet Weise who was the front man for the fantastic band The Quadrajets.  ILCK play in more of a punk blues style then the more rock n roll Quadrajets.
Any of their records are worth searching out but The Essential Fucked Up Blues and Love Is A Charm Of Powerful Trouble are standouts.

At this show Chet was join by J.R. "J.R.R. Tokien" Collins on drums.

I've sat on this recording for years because right after the show I took a listen and it was full of drop outs and glitches and a shelved it.  Listening back recently I discovered that while a fair portion was ruined there a good 40 minutes of solid stuff.

It's a hot sounding soundboard mix in the best possible way.  Besides their originals their tackle some John Lee Hooker, Leadbelly, and R.L. Burnside songs as well.  Killer stuff.  Enjoy.

Dead Kennedys, Regis College, Denver CO, 1985-10-28

This recording of the Dead Kennedys at Regis College has made the rounds.  Probably since the the late 80s in tape trading circles.  The original taper remains unknown as far as I know.  Maybe one of you old school Denver people know.

On a cursory search I see that it has even made it onto a bootleg vinyl LP.  Other music blogs have it posted, it's on Youtube.  Not hard to find.    I corrected some of the right and left channel balance and cleaned up a few spots and tracked it correctly.  Most versions I've seen out there combine A Child and His Lawnmower & Kill The Poor.

It's a nice soundboard mix with East Bay Ray's guitar way up in the mix.  Nice clear vocals too.
Jello is full of piss and vinegar and goes on several long spiels.  Being from Colorado himself he talks about the nerve gas at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal.  Talks shit about suburbs name checking Thornton and Apple Meadows in particular.   Classic ear DKs.  Fun stuff. Enjoy.

Acid Witch @ Three Kings Tavern, Denver CO, 2019-06-14

When I thought about posting a bunch of spooky and creepy bands for October.  This Acid Witch set was one of the first that came to mind.  Hailing from Detroit and making fun creepy metal since 2007.  Right out gate their intro tape is an old school PSA about the hidden dangers of Halloween.

Lots of good songs with a fun tongue in cheek attitude that goes a long way.  Metal doesn't always have to be so grim and serious.  This was my first time catching these guys live.  I would definitely check them out again someday.

Nice sounding set I think.  The band complains about something feeding back onstage but I can't hear it on the recording.  Enjoy.

BlöödHag @ 3 Kings Tavern, Denver CO, 2008-05-06

BlöödHag was from Seattle Washington and played what they called "Edu-core" aka Death Metal.  All of their songs were about authors of science fiction and fantasy books.   They dressed like librarians and did tours of libraries on occasion.  They were a band from 1996-2010 with a bunch of great releases.

This Tuesday night Denver show was ridiculously under attended.  Maybe 20-30 people in Three Kings that night.  Y'all missed out because it was super fun.  All of their under 2 minute long death metal songs were proceeded with a bio or story of each author they played a songs about.  They heckled the crowd back when they got heckled.  They threw books at us.  They had some encore songs written down on their setlist but sadly we did get blessed with an encore.  Good times. Enjoy.

Orange Goblin @ 15th St Tavern, Denver CO, 2002-05-19

Scary October continues with another 15th St Tavern show.

Today it is frightening Orange Goblin on tour for their 2002 release Coup De Grace.  Their first time in Denver Colorado and the crowd showed them much love.  Joined by tour mates Alabama Thunder Pussy and local heavyweights Black Lamb.

Sadly I missed this show but sometime in the early aughts I got given this show on CDR by someone I can't recall.  So I didn't record this and who gave it to me is lost to the sands of time.  If it was you drop me a line and refresh my memory.  It had to have been someone in town so thanks for making such a nice recording.  Not sure where you set up the mics but they stayed in one fixed position throughout.

In between songs there is plenty of that old 15th St atmosphere but during the songs it must have been frighteningly loud because all you can hear is the band while they are playing.  Clear vocals and lots of hi hat.   Enjoy.

Dead Low Tide @ 15th St Tavern, Denver CO, 2002-06-18

Spooky October continues with Dead Low Tide.   What's scarier than the Dead?  Well the 15th Street Tavern's floor and bathrooms were scarier for sure.

Dead Low Tide was Spencer Moody, Cody Willis, and Nate Manny's post Murder City Devils band. Joined by Mike Kunka from God Head Silo and Enemymine.  Mike also recorded an album with the Melvins back in 1999 and never saw the light of day until 2016.  Hell of a band line up.

Dead Low Tide was more post punk than the 70's punk Stooges worship that the Murder City Devils were doing.  Just as interesting in my mind.

Dead Low Tide only put out 7 inch single and then one full length album.  The album didn't come out until they were already split up.

I remember being super stoked about this show and I think this recording turned out really nice.  I have another set of their from when the opened up for Sparta later in the year.  I might try to get that one up a some point.  Enjoy.

City Hunter @ GLOB, Denver CO, 2014-08-30

Here is another scary show for October.   City Hunter is a Denver metal/hardcore band that is horror, slasher movie, themed.  They times I've seen them they play in low light for extra effect.  Once I saw them in the creep Hi Dive basement.  This show was at GLOB opening up for Iron Lung.

Very few live bands maintain the ability to actually frighten people these days.  At this show it started of with a quite kind of ambient slow metallic build before launching into the furious hardcore.  Towards the end of the set a masked individual sprang up from where he was crouched behind the drums and rushed through the crowd looking like a manic and then curled up in a back corner.  It legitimately scared people at the show.  After the initial shock people were actually concerned for the guys well being.  Fun night.

Nekromantix @ Bluebird Theater, Denver CO, 2002-02-18

How about a run of spooky shows for October.  1st up the Nekromantix from Denmark.  They were opening up for Tiger Army at this show.

I remember I had to go to a work event or parent teacher conference after work hours and was wearing some "business casual" cloths to this show.  With my long hair down.  Some guy dressed like Howdy Doody walked up to me, looked me up and down, and incredulously asked me "why are you here".  To which I replied "fucking Nekromantix dude".  He just walked off.  Love me some Psychobilly.  Have for a long time.  But never felt compelled to dress the part.

Perfect length opening set.  Good song choices.  Enjoy.

Melvins @ Fox Theater, Boulder CO 1999-07-07

By 1999 I had seen the Melvins plenty of times.  But this was the first time I made a recording of them.

They were on tour for The Bootlicker album and had Kevin Rutmanis on bass for this run.  The set list is heavy on songs from this era but some old school chestnuts thrown in and their always stellar cover of The Wipers 'Youth Of America'.

As per usual with the Melvins there is not much stage banter.  But at the end Buzz spends a nice long time talking to the crowd, saying Boulder is one of the 3 points of the Bermuda Triangle of hippies (the other two being Eugene OR and San Francisco CA), talking shit about Ozzy using a teleprompter, good stuff.

The set closes with a killer 14 minute long version of Eye Flys and then Dale taunts the crowd for another 5 minutes of occasional drum pounding.  Ah the Melvins.

Enjoy.
