Sun Trash @ Gothic Theatre, Englewood CO, 2007-08-25

I first became aware of desert rock in roll wizard Sean Wheeler through his band Throw Rag.  Who still play the occasional show to this day. I saw them open for the Supersuckers at the Bluebird in November of 2002.  That was Supersuckers at the height of their rock n roll prowess and Throw Rag gave them a run for their money that night.  I was instantly a Throw Rag fan starting that night.   I've seen them at least 20 times over the years.  I once even traveled down to Tempe Arizona to see them.

Sun Trash is one of Sean's multiple other projects.  He has solo albums, a project with Joe Buck, Charley Horse, a stint with Zander Schloss, Sean Wheeler and the Reluctant Messengers, he sang with Brant Bjork, to name a few.

They opened up for Supersuckers at this show with their groovy punk rock sound.  If you are a Throw Rag fan this is right in that zone.  I think this might have been the 1st and last time Sun Trash ever came through Denver.

It had been a long while since I had listened to this.  I quite enjoyed it and have been giving it repeated plays.  The studio output of the band is pretty sparse so it is a nice to hear live versions of these songs. I have one CDR album, Wicked Awesome Vol. XI, with 5 songs and another 3 demos as mp3s.  There is a 2017 self titled CD/LP release that I still want to get a hold of a vinyl copy.

As always go support independent artists and rock'n'roll lifers like Mr. Wheeler anyway you can.

System Of A Down @ Ogden Theatre, Denver CO, 2005-04-27

Whoops!!  Last week I thought I had posted this show but it was brought to my attention that it was not the Denver show but the show from Los Angeles from a few days before.

I had thought all was lost since I didn't think I had a copy of this Denver show in any format.  Thanks to the wonders of a connected world I was reunited with the original FLAC file set that I must have posted in 2005.

So this is what I'm presenting here.  The same FLACs from 2005 but freshly tagged with cover art.
Enjoy

NOFX @ Redrocks Amphitheatre, Morrison CO, 2008-08-22

Figured I might as well throw up the NOFX set after the Bosstones.    Mike talks a lot at this show.  A lot!  I didn't add up the time but I split out 11 stage banter tracks at around 2 minutes or more each.

Love em or hate em NOFX is something else and have put out a lot of good punk rock in their long career.  I've seen them a bunch of times over the years.  10 times maybe.  Not much else to say on this one.

The wind must have died down after the Bosstones because I think this sound a little bit better over all.

Enjoy.

The Mighty Mighty Bosstones @ Redrocks Amphitheater, Morrison CO, 2008-08-22

Well after being shut down all of last season shows are happening at Redrocks again.  This last weekend the Osees and Lucero played.  So it looks like a new normal is happening up there.

Here is a show from 2008.   Punk on the Rocks featured Street Dogs, Bouncing Souls, the Mighty Mighty Bosstones and headliners NOFX.   I managed to record the Bosstones set and NOFX.

Listening back to this I really wish I had remembered to bring some wind screens for my mics.  It's not very noticeable but I can hear it.   As I have mentioned before it can be tough to record at Redrocks.  Or any outdoor environment.   The wind will pick up inside Redrocks and you can hear a bit of a phasing of the audio.   Still an enjoyable listen.

Fugazi @ Ogden Theatre, Denver CO, 2001-04-06

These shows are just over 20 years old.  Where did the time go?  I posted night 1 of this 2 night stand awhile back.  Back in 2012 in fact.  I guess I might as well as get night 2 up.

Here is night 1 if you're interested.

Really nice sound on this one.  Chapper borrowed the big guns, the Neumann SKM140s, for these nights.  Not a completely different set list from night 1 but they mixed it up quite a bit from night one.

Not much else to say other than Fugazi was an amazing band who any serious fan of music should check out.

Fugazi was taper friendly and the recorded a lot of their shows themselves.  This show and the night before are both available on the extensive collection of live Fugazi shows located here.

That said the recording I have posted are not the same as are posted on that site.  I think their sound guy at the time might have been doing a live board mix to DAT.  I don't recall seeing him flying any mics.  I haven't listened what they have posted either.  So Enjoy

Black Halos @ Larimer Lounge, Denver CO, 2005-03-15

While I'm down here mining the nuggets from this 2005 vein.  Here is a rocking show with Canadian's Black Halos.  Live at the Larimer Lounge back in March of 2005.

I saw the Black Halos a bunch over the years.  Opening for L7, on the Warped Tour one time. They seemed to always be on tour.  They put out a bunch of great albums from 1999 - 2008.  They disbanded for awhile after that.

They recently have released a few new songs on 7 inches and supposedly are working on a new album.  Can't wait to hear it.

This was a fun show with Call Sign Cobra opening up.  There was another band on the bill too but I can't recall.  It was 16 years ago.

The sound is pretty good and they rip through a lot of originals and play there Joy Division and Heartbreakers covers.  Enjoy.

Evan Dando @ The Starlight, Ft Collins CO, 2005-01-28

I've always like the Lemonheads since I first heard them.  I think Evan Dando is a really good song writer too.  Great word craft.   So I was excited to see him solo.  I still have never seen the Lemonheads.  But as I write this they have announced some 2021 dates.  So I may still get a chance.

At the time of this show Evan I recall Evan was in a bit of a rough patch or was being portrayed that way.  So I went in with fairly low expectations.  My memory of this show was that it wasn't well attended and Evan looked fucked up.  I recall it being full of young college kids that defiantly weren't there to see him and were just treating him like an open mic performer.   Oh and the bartender was hitting on my lady friend at the time.  So a lot colored my memory of this show.

I also didn't recall that he played with another band on the bill.  From Kansas City and made up of guys from Podstar and Ultimate Fakebook called Dead Girls Ruin Everything.  Later shortened to Dead Girls.  They show up at the end of this recording and play two songs with Evan.  One more sucsessfully than the other.

At the time it seemed kinda of odd that Evan was playing in Ft Collins but it turned out that he was recording at the Blasting Room with Bill Stevenson who was producing and playing on they tracks that ended up on the 2006 self titled Lemonheads album.   Karl Alvarez and J Mascis make appearances on that album too.  I think I need to go back and revisit that album.

All of the negative thoughts I had about this show kind of disappeared when I pulled this out of the archive with thoughts of maybe posting it.  Evan doesn't sound wasted at all.  Crowd is a little chatty but there is lots of cheering and even a very minor crowd participation sing along during Bit Part.

I'm happy with how this sounds and I think it is a fun listen.  Enjoy.
