Truckfighters @ HQ, Denver CO, 2025-05-03

My first time seeing Truckfighters and I got a hell of a show.  Denver was the last date on their US tour so it felt like they pulled out all the stops.  Great setlist and I thought they sounded really good.  They had some equipment problems at the beginning of "Momentum" and the bass player and drummer slow jazz it up for a while until the guitar rejoins.  A special 12 minute version they call it.  Turning lemons into lemonade.  Total pros.   I would totally see Truckfighters again.  Enjoy.

Superchunk @ Ogden Theatre, Denver CO, 1995-04-19

Here is another of MarcR 1995 DAT recordings.  This time Superchunk at the Ogden on April 19th 1995.  They were opening up for Belly at this show.  I guess this is part of the touring for Foolish still since "Here's Where The Strings Come In" didn't come out until September of 1995.

The band's stage banter is really sarcastic and negative at this show.  At one point they call the author of the Westword article that came out before this show an "Asshole".  They call Westword "Water World". Talk mild shit to the crowd.  I thought they might have just been having a bad day.  But then wen I went searching to see if I could find the article I first found this 1999 article.

That mentions that this was kinda of their shtick back then.  Made more sense.  Here is the 1995 article which I now don't think they were that upset about.

Superchunk is still putting out new music and touring to this day.  Go see them if you get a chance for sure.  MarcR did a nice job on this and it was a fun set to process.  Enjoy.

Jill Sobule @ The Lion's Lair, Denver CO, 2009-07-28

I was saddened to hear the news of Jill Sobules tragic passing recently.  She was a Denver native and had shows scheduled for the state this weekend.  I recalled that I had seen her live just one time.  She opened up for John Doe and the Sadies at the Lion's Lair in back in 2009.

I pulled it up yesterday to give it a listen.  The Lair is tiny so sometimes recordings of solo acoustic acts there get drowned out by the bar atmosphere.  I was pleasantly surprised to find that I must have put the mics somewhere really close to the stage and the crowd was so quite and respectful on this night.

A lot of great stories and banter during this and some great performances.  She brings her Mom up on stage to help her sing a cover of Nelly's "Hot in Herre".  It really sweet and funny.  The whole set is a delight.  I hope you enjoy it.

Black Curse @ Hi Dive, Denver CO, 2019-09-13 {Post 666}

Here its post 666!!  I started this blog 16 years ago so it has taken a bit to reach this point.  It's been quite the journey.  I've shared quite a variety of music along they way.  I hope those of you that are into these kind of recordings have enjoyed at least some of them along the way.

I wanted something appropriately evil sounding for post 666 and this Colorado blackened death metal band certainly fits the bit.  I remember dropping the needle down on their 1st album "Endless Wound" and it sounded so evil it felt like all the oxygen had been sucked out of the room  Just a heavy darkness.

Black Curse is made up of folks from some of the best metal bands doing it in Colorado and beyond.
Eli Wendler (Spectral Voice, City Hunter), Zach Coleman (Khemmis, Trve Brewing), Johnathan Campos (Primitive Man), and Morris Kolontyrsky (Blood Incantation).  At this show anyway.  Black Curse is finishing up a tour of Europe right now and Morris is busy touring with BI.  I'm not sure who took his place on this current tour.

The last decade plus has been a golden age of metal coming out of Colorado and breaking internationally.  It has been so cool to be on the ground here to witness it.  Before their current tour they had only played a handful of shows.  I was lucky enough to catch them at an even earlier show than this one I captured.  They played at Syntax Psychic Opera, a 100 cap room that is long gone now, earlier in 2019.  I forget who was on that bill.   Then again at this show they played with Fetid and Cerebral Rot.
Then again in 2023 when the opened up for Dead Congregation.  I'm spoiled rotten.  Enjoy

Rocket From The Crypt @ Seven South, Denver CO, 1995-09-29

Today is post 665 on the way to post 666.  Here we have audio of the mighty Rocket From The Crypt live at Seven South (now the Hi Dive) in Denver Colorado on September 29th 1995.  Almost 30 years ago!!  This show was right before Scream Dracula Scream came out.  Arguable the height of their powers.  Look at the setlist.

Audio today was provided by my long time friend Jim Hucks.  He shot a ton of high quality video in the 90s and 00s.  Often with a board mix feed too.  That is what this is.  Sounds pretty good to me.  I only did some minor tweaks and edits too the file he sent me.

You can see Jim's up-close by the stage video of this show here.

Besides and amazing setlist Speedo has a lot to say and the banter is pretty funny.  Enjoy.

White Drugs @ Hi Dive, Denver CO, 2023-08-12

Today is post 664 on the way to post 666.  Here is a band that I never thought I would see.  White Drugs from Denton TX.  I picked up their album "Gold Magic" back in 2010 based solely on the fact that it was on Amphetamine Reptile records.  I knew nothing about the band but AmRep is a hallmark of quality and I have rarely been disappointed with any of their releases that I own.  They rarely played shows and never put out another record so they faded from my memory a bit.

This recording is from their appearance at the inaugural Ghost Canyon Fest here in Denver back in 2023. They just announce the lineup for the 2025 GCF and I'm excited to check it out for the 3rd year in a row.  In 2023 the band Hoaries were on the schedule to play.  I didn't do much if any research on the lineup that year  so I didn't know that Hoaries is Jeff Helund's post White Drugs band.

Turned out that some of Hoaries band members couldn't make it to Denver.  So Jeff pivoted and had enough band mates to pull off a White Drugs set.  I think they played 2nd on this day too so many people might have missed it.  When I saw White Drugs listed on the door schedule I couldn't believe it was the same band.  But  sure enough it was. They even had some vinyl and shirts.  I was hella stoked.

The setlist is a mix of songs from both albums and the deep cut "Muscle Be-atch".  They pack a lot in in 24 minutes.  Sounds pretty good too I think. Enjoy.

Beehive and The Barracudas @ Tulagi's, Boulder CO, 2002-08-26

Today is post 663 on the way to post 666.  I recently found a used copy of Beehive & the Barracudas 2003 album "In Dark Love" at a great local shop in Denver called Drop To Pop.  I had for gotten how quirky and fun they were.  This recording is from the one time I saw them in 2002 at Tulagi's in Boulder Colorado.  They opened up for Hot Snakes.  What a great show.

I hadn't really listened to this since I recorded it 23 years ago.  I finally checked it out briefly when I retransferred all my MD masters a year or so ago.  Hearing the album kicked me into gear though.  I went back and listened to all their albums.  Kind of in the vein of The Spits or The Briefs.  Punk rock but softer edged.  They call it Plastic Soul.

Pretty nice sound on this and a killer setlist.  Funny stage banter though out and right before Whip Out My Pistol some jackass starts telling them they suck and the lead singer makes swift work of putting him in his place.  Fool didn't know who he was dealing with.  Enjoy.

Denver Joe and the Lovesick Saddle Tramps @ Cricket on the Hill, Denver CO, 200X-XX-XX

Today for post 662 on the way to post 666.  Denver Joe and the Lovesick Saddle Tramps live at the Cricket on the Hill in the mid aughts.  Thanks to Jake Norris for recording this and letting me share it.
If you're unfamiliar with Denver Joe.  Here is a pretty good place to get up to speed on this Denver legend.  The Denver publication Modern Drunkard had a profile on him long ago.  Check it out here.
Also photo credit above goes to MD as well.

Joe passed away in 2018 and Westword did a profile on him as well

Joe and his band mates “Aunt” Lois and “Uncle” Dick Meis, played at the Capital Hill bar Cricket on the Hill for years and years.  The would play at Benders for awhile after the Cricket closed.  Joe was a salty old cuss on stage.  If you yelled  out a request he usually would let you have it.  He called me a dirty hippy once for saying "Garth Brooks sucks".  A Denver Joe show was part comedy act but he could really play as sing and Lois and Dick had a long music history and were stellar musicians.

He leans into the classic and outlaw country.  But on this night we got a country version of a Supremes song.  We think this show was around 05 or 06. He was drunken, vulgar & rude onstage but always a fun time.  Fun one to revisit.  Enjoy.

Throw Rag@ Bluebird Theatre, Denver CO, 2002-11-22

Here is the 6 of 13 posts on the way down to post 666.  The countdown continues.

I love Throw Rag and and anything Sean Wheeler is involved in.  I'm positive I had heard them by this point in the fall of 2002.  Desert Shores didn't drop until summer of 2003 but I know I had their split 7 inch with Tenderloin in the late 90s.   This was for sure my first time seeing the band.

I'm unsure on the microphones used.  It might have been my buddy Tom's Microtech Gefell m300s > Sonosax SX-M2 rig.  This kinds of sounds like it was recorded from a tall stand.  Either way I think this sounds pretty good with minimal crowd chatter.  Killer setlist too.  Enjoy

Abdomen Of Hypnosis @ Ogden Theatre, Denver CO, 1995-03-04

Here is the 7 of 13 posts on the way down to post 666.  The countdown continues.

Today another MarcR 1995 recording.  This time it's one for all you old Denver rock heads who were around in the 90s.  Abdomen Of Hypnosis was a Denver band that put out a few things on local label  D.U. Records..  Which is also the label all the Longmont Potion Castle stuff comes out on.  Is there a connection?  I don't know.

Abdomen Of Hypnosis sound notched right in with the 90s alt rock era.  I pick up some Dinosaur Jr influences for sure.  I never got to see them live but have had their CD "Terminal Area" since around the time of this show.  I always really liked it.  I dug it out recently to help with tracking out this set and I think it still holds up great.  Worth seeking out I think.

Short opening set from these guys on this night. They were opening for Sebadoh.

To Be Eaten @ Three Kings Tavern, Denver CO, 2010-08-08

Here is the 8 of 13 posts on the way down to post 666.  The countdown continues.

To Be Eaten totally ruled back in the aughts.  I saw them a bunch of times.  I got to know Ben Pitts back around that time and have seen him in a bunch of bands in those 15 years.  These days he has Nightwraith, and plays with In Company Of Serpents, and a few other projects that are escaping me at the moment.  He's a busy guy.

I asked Ben about the title for the 4th song in this set and he said they never gave it a name at the time and were still calling it New Song until the end.

Pretty nice sound on this.  Mix is a little rowdy at first but it gets reigned in.  This is a combo of my room mics and a board feed.  The pictures and poster are from a different show but are the only good shots I had of To Be Eaten.  As Ben mentions in the recording this particular show they played on a bill with Only Thunder and Chuck Ragan!!  Hell of a night.

Primus @ Mammoth Events Center, Denver CO, 1995-12-10

Here is the 9 of 13 post on the way down to post 666.  The countdown continues.

Today I present another of the MarcR recordings.  This time a show from Primus at the Mammoth Event Center (aka Fillmore) in Denver on December 10th 1995.  They were on tour for Tales From The Punchbowl and Les says this was the last night of their tour.  I did some looking around and I can't seem to find this show posted anywhere else so this is either uncirculated or barely circulated.

"Wynona's Big Brown Beaver" was their hit at the time.  They play it early in the set and Les introduces it saying "Ok lets get this over with".   Ha Ha.

Pretty varied setlist with songs from across their catalog.  I think MarcR must have recorded this up in the balcony.  The crowd sounds mostly distant except for a few people shouting out for songs.  Marc got a good pull here which can be hard to do in this room.  Enjoy.

Reverend Deadeye @ The Continental Club, Denver CO, 2008-06-27

Here is the 10 of 13 post on the way down to post 666.  The countdown continues.

The right good Reverend Deadeye from Denver plays a mix of gospel, garage, and blues.  He kicked around Denver for years and now mostly resides in Switzerland. I must have seen him first at either Benders or Lion's Lair with his "goddamn wife".  Mostly I saw him as a solo act but he was also in a band with Alex Herbert called Broken Spirits.  I lost track of the number of times I caught him live over the years.

While his live appearances are few and far between these days he is still active.  You can learn more and buy some of his music on his site    https://www.revdeadeye.com/

Around the time of this show in 2008 Deadeye appeared in a independent movie called "THE FOLK SINGER - A Tale of Men, Music & America".  Him, Possessed By Paul James, and Scott H Biram speak and play songs about why they do what they do.  Worth seeking out if your a fan of any of these guys.

This show was at the fun but short lived Continental Club in Denver at 5th and Santa Fe.  It opened not long after we moved to the neighborhood and we had some fun times there.  The Reverend Deadeye was packing up his van and hitting the road.  For good.  See ya later.  So this was billed as his "Farewell show".  He let me setup my mics right in front of him on the on the floor were he performed.  So it is about as direct as it gets.  Really happy with this capture.  This was in an active bar environment so there is some atmosphere on the recording I kind of like it.  It took me right back to this night.  Enjoy.

The Bronx @ Boulder Theatre, Boulder CO, 2003-06-21

Here is the 11 of 13 post on the way to post 666.  The countdown continues.

This time my 2nd time seeing The Bronx.  The 1st time was the night before in Denver.  Before big promotors were keen on proximity clauses bands would come to Colorado and do a 2 or 3 city run across the front range.  I loved it and would often catch all the dates.

This tour was with The Supersuckers and Throw Rag which was a hell of a kick ass line up.
I assume that this was the first time The Bronx had come to Colorado.  Matt complains about t he altitude which is a sure sign of a newbie to the state.  The Bronx are still at it and bigger than either of the bands they opened for on this tour these days.

Me and my buddy Tom were in good with the Throw Rag guys and probably got guest listed for this one.  They certainly helped us get our recording gear and mic stands in.  We even got a board feed on this night.  This Bronx recording is from the board and a cool fun listen.  But also illustrative of why a monitor feed can be not so great.  The mix is a bit all over the place before settling in for their first set.   I must have had a bad MD too because I had to cut the first 2 songs because a massive amount of  drop outs.

Planes Mistaken For Stars @ Oriental Theatre, Denver CO, 2007-08-13

Here is the 12 of 13 post on the way to post 666.  The countdown continues.

This time a ferocious  Planes Mistaken For Stars set at the Oriental Theatre in Denver at the end of the summer of 2007.   I posted a June of 2007 PMFS show back in 2021.  This is the only other time that I recorded them.  I did see them a few more times after this.

It all has come to a rather sad end with PMFS but I can't think of another band with a stronger posthumously released album than "Do You Still Love Me?"  If you are a fan and haven't heard that yet.  Drop what you're doing and go listen.

This was a free show on a Monday night.  I walked right in with a mic stand and flew them high for this set.  We got cool opening sets from California band Mystery Hang Up and locals 29th Street Disciples. Enjoy.

Thrones @ Three Kings Tavern, Denver CO, 2008-05-31

I started this blog in September of 2009 as a outlet for all of my recordings.  Live recordings are certainly not everyone's thing so I don't get a lot of visitors, comments, or downloads even.  But over the years I have had plenty of people thank me for shows or doing what I do.  I appreciate that so much.

Today starts the 13 post countdown to the 666th ThatsTheThingAboutThat post.  I have found some gems combing through the archive.  I look forward to sharing these with you in the coming months.

First up a 2008 recording of Joe Preston's project Thrones.  Joe had played with a ton of people over the years including Earth, Melvins, Men's Recovery Project, The Need, High on Fire, Harvey Milk, Sunn O))), and Sumac.  He came through Denver a few times in the aughts.

This was a fun show with locals Munimula and 19 AD opening up.  It starts off a little quiet and the crowd is a bit chatty but before long he turns it up and it sounds good I think.  Enjoy.

Messa @ Hi Dive, Denver CO, 2024-05-16

Messa is an Italian heavy band. Self described as "Scarlet Doom".  It has a more delicate sensibility than what most people would think of when they conjure some doom to mind.  Not dissimilar to BIG|BRAVE who I posted not to long ago. Really loud to really quiet.

I always try to go see smaller touring bands that have come from out of the country and made it to Denver.  It is a undertaking and I appreciate it greatly.  My friend Matteo who is currently living in Italy insisted before he left that I go see Messa when they came.  I was immediately a fan.  Right up my alley.  Side note.  Maybe the most nicely dressed doom band I have ever seen.  No dirty converse shoes but fine leather boots.    They have all their stuff on bandcamp.  Go give them and other independent artists your support.

Pretty respectful crowd during the quiet parts.  I greatly enjoyed revisiting this show from spring of 2024.  Enjoy

The Muffs @ Ogden Theatre, Denver CO, 1995-04-25

Here is another of the 90s MarcR DATs,  This time a performance from The Muffs at the Ogden Theatre back on April 25th 1995.  I've never see a whole lot of Muffs recordings out there so I figured I would share this one.  They were part of a show with Fig Dish, and Veruca Salt.

The Muffs must have been up early on the bill.  The complain about all the +21 people being upstairs and the kids looking bored.  Kim has a lot of stage banter.    Guitar sound pretty good but the vocals are a bit buried.

The Nomads @ The Starlight, Ft Collins CO, 1999-05-22

I had only started recording shows about a month before this one.  The Nomads from Sweden were part of a killer bill.  The were on the road with The Quadrajets and The Hellacopters!!!  I've posted both of those sets before but I was give a listen to the Nomads set the other day and figured I needed to get it posted up too.  Even if it is only 5 songs from their set on this night.

In the days of recording to minidisc you only had so much room so you had to manage to watch the time and swap out for new blanks.  Maybe I didn't have enough media to record their whole set.

Sounds pretty decent for an early taping outing I think.  Killer band too. After revisiting this I went back and listened to a bunch of their studio stuff.  The Nomads started in 1981 and continue on to this day.
Enjoy!

No/Más @ Hi Dive, Denver CO, 2023-06-02

Some fast, angry, thrashy, grindcore is really hitting the spot right now.  No/Más is from Washington D.C. and kick some serious ass live.  Would defiantly go see them again if I get another chance.
