Blood Incantation @ Three Kings Tavern, Denver CO, 2013-07-20

Well the final and 25th UMS starts in Denver today.  What better way to celebrate than with another set from UMS past.  This time a band that I have love since this first time I saw them back in 2013.  Blood Incantation has been blowing up the last couple years.  The new album Absolute Elsewhere has been getting rave reviews and attracting non metal audiences to their sold out shows across the globe.  It has been awesome to see all their hard work over the years paying off for them.  So well deserved.

I've seen Blood Incantation play live lots of times since this show.  Recorded them a few of those times and even posted a show on here before.  At the end of last year I got a copy of their 1st cassette "Astral Spells" released as a 10 inch vinyl by Doomentia records.  In the liner notes there are two early interviews re printed and in one of them Paul mentions that they are getting ready to play their their 1st show ever at the UMS.

It had been awhile and I don't always record sets at the UMS.  But I pulled up my spreadsheet to see and low and behold there it was.  They shared the stage with a lot of great bands on this day at Three Kings.  Battlespawn, Call Of The Void, Hi-Strung, IL CATTIVO, Panal S.A.DE C.V., Speedwolf, & Stoic Dissention.  This was a hell of a day at 3K.

Sound is pretty good on this I think.  I left off the first song due to technical difficulties.  Enjoy.

Townies @ Hi Dive, Denver CO, 2023-07-28

Here is another set from UMS past.  This time the best (punk) band from Trinidad Colorado now or ever.  Townies!!!!   Live at the Hi Dive back in 2023.  They consists of Suzanne Magnuson: Vocals, Ben Gallagher: Bass, Curt Wallach: Guitar, & Fred Bohlander: Drums.  Curt and Suzanne have Denver roots with Hi Dive, Track Shack, Space In Time, and some other band activity.  Great folks.  They left Denver for Trinidad awhile ago but occasionally play a show here or at their place down south the Dad Lounge.

They play a classic punk rock styler with funny and political songs.  Fun stuff.  You can check out their two releases right here.  https://fuckingtownies.bandcamp.com/music

Enjoy!

IL CATTIVO @ Three Kings Tavern, Denver CO, 2013-07-20

Here is another UMS set.  This time from 2013 with Denver band IL CATTIVO preforming at Three Kings Tavern. Formed in 2009, the band was a fixture on the Denver scene, comprised of Brian Hagman , Matt Bellinger, Jed Kopp, Arj Narayan, and Matt Cavanaugh.  They played a heavy style of post punk, post metal, post whatever.  They killed it live.

From the same day/night as the Speedwolf show I posted previously.
What a great day of music that was. Enjoy.

Tin Horn Prayer @ Three Kings Tavern, Denver CO, 2011-07-23

Here is another show form UMS past.  This time Tin Horn Prayer live at Three Kings Tavern during the 2011 UMS.  Tin Horn Prayer was active from 2010ish to 2013.  They played a rootsy kind of train punk and were always a great time live.  They met a sad end with several members passing.

You can still check out all their musical out put here.    https://tinhornprayer.bandcamp.com/

Pretty good sound on this and the band was relatively sober for this show as they mention at the beginning  Enjoy.

Speedwolf @ Three Kings Tavern, Denver CO, 2013-07-20

Well with the announcement that this year is going to be the last Underground Music Fest in Denver.  This is also the 25th year for the UMS.  I've gone most years.  Certainly every years since 2007ish.  Living very near to all the venues they have it in certainly made it an easy one to attend for me.

They have said that they might come back in a different form someday.  We will see what happens I guess.  I'm going to miss it.

I'm going to post a few sets from UMS across the years.  Today the mighty Speedwolf who headlined the UMS stage at Three Kings Tavern back in 2013.  It was always a lot of fun to see these guys.  They topped the bill of a mostly metal and heavy stage I recall.   Something that UMS doesn't always include.  In the last few years we might get 1 or 2 nods to metal.

This is a fun set.  A little rough and rowdy!!  SPEED WITH THE WOLF!!!

Chat Pile @ Gothic Theatre, Englewood CO, 2025-03-06

Here is one of my favorite bands going right now.  Chat Pile from Oklahoma. They have been bubbling up for the underground since 2019.  Their 2021 album God's Country really brought more attention to the band.  Their 2024 album Cool World continues this good work.

A Chat Pile is mining term for the big piles of leftover sandy material that is produced from the Zinc and Lead mining.  They are scattered about Oklahoma, Missouri, and Kansas and are considered hazardous material due to the fine particles of heavy metals they contain that are easily blow around.

The band Chat Pile is itself a conglomeration of musical genre's.  To me they sound like a mix of every band that was on Amphetamine Reptile Records and a healthy scoop of grunge music.  It's loud, heavy, and can be confrontational sonically.  But then the band kind of looks like regular dudes.  The singer talks about movies filmed in the area that they are playing so we get a lot of Denver and Colorado movie talk.  Good times. Enjoy.

Red Cloud West @ Larimer Lounge, Denver CO, 2004-08-22

Red Cloud (West) was a fantastic band in Denver in the early to mid aughts.  Core members were Jason Heller and Ross Etherton.  On their CD Neil Keener played bass and Andrew Wagner played drums.  Not sure if they played at this live show or not since I can find no pictures.

They had to add "West: to their name after some hip hop guy calling himself Red Cloud got after them.
Great fiery guitar work.  Some what of a loud quite loud atheistic.  They kind of sounded like a post punk Neil Young and Crazy Horse.  I was a huge fan and saw them play live a bunch.   This show was part of a big day at the Larimer Lounge that also featured Slim Cessna's Auto Club, Railbenders, Drag The River, and Foggy Mountain Fuckers.  Good times.

Real nice audience recording with a mostly quite and polite crowd.  As the ladies at the very end say "Red Cloud Forever!!!!!....word"  Enjoy.

Jesus Lizard @ Fox Theatre, Boulder CO, 1997-02-15

Today I'm sharing this audio from Jim Hucks fantastic video of a1997 Jesus Lizard show at the Fox Theatre in Boulder Colorado.  Jim sent me a big audio cache recently so I'll be getting some more of that posted soon.

Jesus Lizard was touring behind their 1st major label album Shot.  They play songs off of that and a nice mix of back catalog.  Pretty nice board mix.  A few drop outs and cut ins in a couple spots.
During the interlude track David Yow brought out their backstage cold cuts platter and some bread and passed it out to the crowd.  You proceeded to mostly just made a big mess.  Prompting Yow to say "Eat it don't throw it".  He complains lightly and makes jokes about the recent indoor cigarette smoking ban that had recently gone in to effect.  Head up if you watch Jim's video linked below.  Yow takes off his pants.

Thanks again to Jim for sharing this with me.  Jesus Lizard are such a great band.  Long time favorite.  I hope they make it to Denver again at some point in their occasional short runs.  Enjoy.

Elder @ Electric Ballroom, London England, 2025-05-16

Here is another set from the Desert Fest London.  This time the band Elder.  They are from Massachusetts but are based in Berlin Gemmary now.  They play a melodic progressive doom metal.  I have seen them before in Denver on a much smaller stage back in 2022.

I missed the very beginning of their set because I was coming from seeing Årabrot set at the Underworld.
Sounds pretty good and the crowd isn't too chatty.  Towards the end there is a chatty bit were they made us stop standing on the stairs that we had been standing on the whole show up until that point.  Enjoy.

I've seen Dave Alvin before but never Jimmie Dale Gilmore so this was a not miss for me this year.
We got a nice long set with a bunch of their originals and some fun covers.  Really great show and I think this recording turned out pretty nice.  Enjoy.

Slim Cessnas Auto Club @ Bluebird Theatre, Denver CO, 1999-05-29

Here is an older one.  I had only been recording live audio at show for about a month or so at this point.  I was already a big SCAC fan and had seen them many times.  I tried to record them a the Lion's Lair a few weeks before and totally botched it.  This was my redemption.

In 1999 SCAC was going through a big change.  Long time member Frank Hauser Jr was no longer in the band and Munly had joined not long before this.  This is a transition show where they are still playing some of the old numbers from the 1st 2 CDs,.   Once they got rolling with Munly and the new songs started coming they never played these old songs very much anymore.

Wish I could remember were I stood and recorded this.  There is very little crowd chatter and I think it sounds pretty nice.  Enjoy.

Michael Dean Damron @ Three Kings Tavern, Denver CO, 2012-04-21

Not long after hearing of Michael Dean Damron's passing I posted a I Can Lick Any Sonofabitch In The House show.  My friend Karen Cuda asked me about this show that she played with MDD.  I sent her the picture and said I would check out the audio.  I finally got around to it and it's short but sweet.

Karen plays bass and after a bit my old pal Dan Utter got up and joined in on harmonica. Micah Schnabel gets up there at the end to help on The Weight cover.  Fun times we had.

Dopelord @ The Underworld, London England, 2025-05-18

Earlier this year my buddy Matteo asked if I would want to come to London in May for Desert Fest.
I hadn't seen my friend for a long time and I have always wanted to go to a Desert Fest.  Plus I had never been to London before so it was a win win.

London is a cool city and I had a great time checking it out in between seeing 17 bands over 3 days.
The schedules overlap a bit and some venues you need to be there early yo get in sometimes.  I went mostly for bands that I had never seen or might never get a chance to see.  Caught some really cool stuff.  In order.  Wallowing, Sea Bastard, 10,000 Years, Arabrot, Elder, Scott Hepple & The Sun Band, Conan, Sons of Alpha Centari, Avon, Planet of Zeus, Green Milk From The Planet Orange, Bobbie Dazzle, Mr. Bison, Divide and Dissolve, Castle Rat, Dopelord, Electric Funeral

I made a bunch of recordings too. Figured Dopelord would be a good one to post first since they were one of my must see bands of the fest. Good times.

Truckfighters @ HQ, Denver CO, 2025-05-03

My first time seeing Truckfighters and I got a hell of a show.  Denver was the last date on their US tour so it felt like they pulled out all the stops.  Great setlist and I thought they sounded really good.  They had some equipment problems at the beginning of "Momentum" and the bass player and drummer slow jazz it up for a while until the guitar rejoins.  A special 12 minute version they call it.  Turning lemons into lemonade.  Total pros.   I would totally see Truckfighters again.  Enjoy.

Superchunk @ Ogden Theatre, Denver CO, 1995-04-19

Here is another of MarcR 1995 DAT recordings.  This time Superchunk at the Ogden on April 19th 1995.  They were opening up for Belly at this show.  I guess this is part of the touring for Foolish still since "Here's Where The Strings Come In" didn't come out until September of 1995.

The band's stage banter is really sarcastic and negative at this show.  At one point they call the author of the Westword article that came out before this show an "Asshole".  They call Westword "Water World". Talk mild shit to the crowd.  I thought they might have just been having a bad day.  But then wen I went searching to see if I could find the article I first found this 1999 article.

That mentions that this was kinda of their shtick back then.  Made more sense.  Here is the 1995 article which I now don't think they were that upset about.

Superchunk is still putting out new music and touring to this day.  Go see them if you get a chance for sure.  MarcR did a nice job on this and it was a fun set to process.  Enjoy.

Jill Sobule @ The Lion's Lair, Denver CO, 2009-07-28

I was saddened to hear the news of Jill Sobules tragic passing recently.  She was a Denver native and had shows scheduled for the state this weekend.  I recalled that I had seen her live just one time.  She opened up for John Doe and the Sadies at the Lion's Lair in back in 2009.

I pulled it up yesterday to give it a listen.  The Lair is tiny so sometimes recordings of solo acoustic acts there get drowned out by the bar atmosphere.  I was pleasantly surprised to find that I must have put the mics somewhere really close to the stage and the crowd was so quite and respectful on this night.

A lot of great stories and banter during this and some great performances.  She brings her Mom up on stage to help her sing a cover of Nelly's "Hot in Herre".  It really sweet and funny.  The whole set is a delight.  I hope you enjoy it.

Black Curse @ Hi Dive, Denver CO, 2019-09-13 {Post 666}

Here its post 666!!  I started this blog 16 years ago so it has taken a bit to reach this point.  It's been quite the journey.  I've shared quite a variety of music along they way.  I hope those of you that are into these kind of recordings have enjoyed at least some of them along the way.

I wanted something appropriately evil sounding for post 666 and this Colorado blackened death metal band certainly fits the bit.  I remember dropping the needle down on their 1st album "Endless Wound" and it sounded so evil it felt like all the oxygen had been sucked out of the room  Just a heavy darkness.

Black Curse is made up of folks from some of the best metal bands doing it in Colorado and beyond.
Eli Wendler (Spectral Voice, City Hunter), Zach Coleman (Khemmis, Trve Brewing), Johnathan Campos (Primitive Man), and Morris Kolontyrsky (Blood Incantation).  At this show anyway.  Black Curse is finishing up a tour of Europe right now and Morris is busy touring with BI.  I'm not sure who took his place on this current tour.

The last decade plus has been a golden age of metal coming out of Colorado and breaking internationally.  It has been so cool to be on the ground here to witness it.  Before their current tour they had only played a handful of shows.  I was lucky enough to catch them at an even earlier show than this one I captured.  They played at Syntax Psychic Opera, a 100 cap room that is long gone now, earlier in 2019.  I forget who was on that bill.   Then again at this show they played with Fetid and Cerebral Rot.
Then again in 2023 when the opened up for Dead Congregation.  I'm spoiled rotten.  Enjoy

Rocket From The Crypt @ Seven South, Denver CO, 1995-09-29

Today is post 665 on the way to post 666.  Here we have audio of the mighty Rocket From The Crypt live at Seven South (now the Hi Dive) in Denver Colorado on September 29th 1995.  Almost 30 years ago!!  This show was right before Scream Dracula Scream came out.  Arguable the height of their powers.  Look at the setlist.

Audio today was provided by my long time friend Jim Hucks.  He shot a ton of high quality video in the 90s and 00s.  Often with a board mix feed too.  That is what this is.  Sounds pretty good to me.  I only did some minor tweaks and edits too the file he sent me.

You can see Jim's up-close by the stage video of this show here.

Besides and amazing setlist Speedo has a lot to say and the banter is pretty funny.  Enjoy.

Today is post 664 on the way to post 666.  Here is a band that I never thought I would see.  White Drugs from Denton TX.  I picked up their album "Gold Magic" back in 2010 based solely on the fact that it was on Amphetamine Reptile records.  I knew nothing about the band but AmRep is a hallmark of quality and I have rarely been disappointed with any of their releases that I own.  They rarely played shows and never put out another record so they faded from my memory a bit.

This recording is from their appearance at the inaugural Ghost Canyon Fest here in Denver back in 2023. They just announce the lineup for the 2025 GCF and I'm excited to check it out for the 3rd year in a row.  In 2023 the band Hoaries were on the schedule to play.  I didn't do much if any research on the lineup that year  so I didn't know that Hoaries is Jeff Helund's post White Drugs band.

Turned out that some of Hoaries band members couldn't make it to Denver.  So Jeff pivoted and had enough band mates to pull off a White Drugs set.  I think they played 2nd on this day too so many people might have missed it.  When I saw White Drugs listed on the door schedule I couldn't believe it was the same band.  But  sure enough it was. They even had some vinyl and shirts.  I was hella stoked.

The setlist is a mix of songs from both albums and the deep cut "Muscle Be-atch".  They pack a lot in in 24 minutes.  Sounds pretty good too I think. Enjoy.

Beehive and The Barracudas @ Tulagi's, Boulder CO, 2002-08-26

Today is post 663 on the way to post 666.  I recently found a used copy of Beehive & the Barracudas 2003 album "In Dark Love" at a great local shop in Denver called Drop To Pop.  I had for gotten how quirky and fun they were.  This recording is from the one time I saw them in 2002 at Tulagi's in Boulder Colorado.  They opened up for Hot Snakes.  What a great show.

I hadn't really listened to this since I recorded it 23 years ago.  I finally checked it out briefly when I retransferred all my MD masters a year or so ago.  Hearing the album kicked me into gear though.  I went back and listened to all their albums.  Kind of in the vein of The Spits or The Briefs.  Punk rock but softer edged.  They call it Plastic Soul.

Pretty nice sound on this and a killer setlist.  Funny stage banter though out and right before Whip Out My Pistol some jackass starts telling them they suck and the lead singer makes swift work of putting him in his place.  Fool didn't know who he was dealing with.  Enjoy.

Denver Joe and the Lovesick Saddle Tramps @ Cricket on the Hill, Denver CO, 200X-XX-XX

Today for post 662 on the way to post 666.  Denver Joe and the Lovesick Saddle Tramps live at the Cricket on the Hill in the mid aughts.  Thanks to Jake Norris for recording this and letting me share it.
If you're unfamiliar with Denver Joe.  Here is a pretty good place to get up to speed on this Denver legend.  The Denver publication Modern Drunkard had a profile on him long ago.  Check it out here.
Also photo credit above goes to MD as well.

Joe passed away in 2018 and Westword did a profile on him as well

Joe and his band mates “Aunt” Lois and “Uncle” Dick Meis, played at the Capital Hill bar Cricket on the Hill for years and years.  The would play at Benders for awhile after the Cricket closed.  Joe was a salty old cuss on stage.  If you yelled  out a request he usually would let you have it.  He called me a dirty hippy once for saying "Garth Brooks sucks".  A Denver Joe show was part comedy act but he could really play as sing and Lois and Dick had a long music history and were stellar musicians.

He leans into the classic and outlaw country.  But on this night we got a country version of a Supremes song.  We think this show was around 05 or 06. He was drunken, vulgar & rude onstage but always a fun time.  Fun one to revisit.  Enjoy.
