Slim Cessnas Auto Club @ Bluebird Theatre, Denver CO, 2003-12-30

The Slim Cessna New Years show have long been a Denver tradition.  By the time I noticed that there had not been an announcement for this year it was way passed time that there would be one.  I didn't make it every year but I saw a bunch over the years.  All good things come to an end.  So it goes.

It got me to wondering if I had any New Year SCAC shows that I had recorded but not shared.  Turns out I only have the one show from 2001.  I posted that a few years ago.  The closest I had was this day before NYE show from 2003.  I transferred all of my minidisc masters digitally back in 2003 and must not have listed to what this was back then or I might have shared it sooner.

I got a board feed on this night and it sounds pretty great but has some irregularities that a board feed can have.  This is the house mix so vocals are forefront and most of the instruments are a bit subdued.
Also the in-between song parts are really quite.  You can barely hear the crowd.  Good and bad.

I also might have shelved back in 2003 because at the end Slim plays the 1st part of "Last Song About Satan" with his capo on and the rest of the band can't play along.  It gets resolved and everyone has a laugh.  Before the last song Slim says how embarrassed he was and he hopes he never has to hear what that sounded like.  Honestly since the guitars are so low in the mix it doesn't sound to bad.  I figure since it was 22 years ago I'm safe to share it.  Cheers to the Auto Club and all the fun times.

Belly @ Ogden Theatre, Denver CO, 1995-04-19

I just saw that Belly is on tour for the 30th anniversary of their album King.  They rolled through Denver last week in fact.  I didn't see that show as I was at Cattle Decapitation that night.  But it reminded me that MarcR had recorded Belly 30 years ago.   So here it is.

I posted the Superchuck set from this night earlier this year.  Good setlist.  Enjoy.

Melvins @ Fox Theatre, Boulder CO, 2003-05-10

Today we have a Melvins show from 2003 that I have never shared for some reason.  This was part of the Geek Show tour with Tomahawk and Skeleton Key.  I've posted both of those sets previously.
Melvins were touring behind the album Hostile Ambient Takeover still.  This was an epic night,

Enjoy.

16 Horsepower, Fox Theatre, Boulder CO, 1996-03-22

In light of the recent news that 16 Horsepower are reuniting in 2026 to play some shows. I decided to share is spectacular 1996 FM broadcast of them playing at the Fox Theater in Boulder Colorado back in March of 1996.  This show was right between their releases Sackcloth N' Ashes and Lowe Estate.

16 Horsepower is announcing a bunch of European tour dates soon and so far the only scheduled show in the US is going to be at Fire In The Mountains Festival.  It takes place in East Glacier Montana this July.  This fest has been so expertly curated the last few years it feels like it is becoming the American version of the esteemed Roadburn Festival in Tilburg.  Check it out here.  https://www.fitmfest.com/

I got this from someone 25ish years ago in the CDR trading days.  I had forgotten about it until sorting through that collection not long ago.  This is a real gem.  Enjoy.

The Cavemen @ Piper's Opera House, Virginia City NV, 2018-04-15

Going a few year back with this one.  The Cavemen from New Zealand and play some unhinged drunken wild rock n roll.  I got to see them twice at Debauch-A-Reno Fest back in 2018.  This show was at the opera house up in Virginia City Nevada.  It was a fun weird time.  Not long before they went on I came upon the band in on of the stairwells in the venue drinking beer shots out of the drummer beat up Converse hightops.  Gross!!  They rocked though.  Short but sweet set on this day.

The put out a bunch of 7 inches and a few albums that I dig over the last decade or so.  Been pretty quiet recently.  Not sure if they are still an active band.  I was reminded of this show by a post on IG recently from their American record label Slovenly asking if anyone knew what they were up too.  Enjoy.

Joe Jackson @ Paramount Theatre, Denver CO, 1994-12-08

For today's post here is another of MarcR's mid 90s DAT captures.  I have been wanting to post this one for awhile. I was finally inspired buy the Anthrax show I just posted.  They had a minor hit with a cover of his song "Got The Time" and played at that 2000 Boulder show.  That was a song on Joe Jackson's first album from 1979.  For this tour in 1994 Joe keeps the fast tempo of that song but with more acoustic instrumentation.  Fun to compare those back to back.

I'm  guessing Marc sat at the  front of the balcony for this as there isn't much chatter.  Good crowd and Joe talks a bunch through out the set.  And wow what a set at almost 2 hours.  Nice sound on this one I think.  Enjoy.

Anthrax @ Fox Theatre, Boulder CO, 2000-01-31

In 1987 when Anthrax's album Among The Living came out I had already been a fan for a little bit.  I was 18 and trying to share my love for the album with my Mom.  Through the connection that we both were Steven King fans.  I didn't think she would love it but she heard it and made a face of dislike.  Then she said "That sounds like dangerous accident music, I hope you don't listen to that while you're driving"

At this Anthrax show from the Fox Theatre in Boulder Colorado in January of the year 2000.  Right before they play Metal Thrashing Mad, Scott Ian talks for a little bit, and he mentions that this song is about drinking and driving to fast.  So, as with a lot of things, Mom was right.

Anthrax was on tour for a greatest hits collection called "Return Of The Killer As".  It featured a cover of The Temptations song "Ball of Confusion" that had vocals from current vocalist John Bush and former vocalist at the time Joey Belladona.  This was supposed to a tour with both of them trading off songs.  Somehow that didn't work out so it is just John Bush singing.

Fox always sounded good so this is pretty ok.  Vocals and clear and the drums are thundering.  Guitars get a little muddy but very listenable.  Enjoy.

Indian @ Bluebird Theatre, Denver CO, 2022-07-15

This is about the polar opposite of the last post.  Sludge doom group Indian from Chicago are quite a bit louder than Low.  They don't play out a whole lot but I've been lucky and have seen them twice. Once at a Psycho Vegas fest in 2018 and then on this killer bill in Denver with Primitive Man in 2022.  Ethan McCarthy from Primitive Man joins them for for this set adding noise and electronic flourishes.  It's just loud, ugly and brutal start to finish.  I love this kind of stuff.  Especially live.

Low @ Ogden Theatre, Denver CO, 1995-09-26

Here is another of the MarcR DAT archive.  This time I present a really beautiful recording of the Minnesota band Low at the Ogden Theatre back on September 26th 1995.  They were on tour with Soul Coughing.  They were supporting their album 'Long Division' but played some older songs and some songs that end up on the next album 'The Curtain Hits The Cast'.

I have been listening to Alan Sparhawk's newest solo album and his collaboration with Trampled By Turtles a bunch recently.  Both are fantastic is different ways.  That reminded me MarcR had a Low recording.  After really listening to it I knew I had to share it. This show isn't listed on setlist fm or on the Low LMA page.  So here is an uncirculated 1995 Low show with one of the most respectful and quiet audiences I have ever not heard.  Alan even thanks them for being so quiet at one point. Enjoy!

Carcass @ HQ, Denver CO, 2025-09-26

For the final scary thatsthethingaboutthat post of October.  What is scarier that a dead body?  Human or animal remains prepared for consumption or left to rot.  BOO!!  Scary to most people's ears is the long running British band Carcass.  With albums like Reek of Putrefaction or the cover art of Symphonies of Sickness was enough to put most people off.  Carcass rise above the death metal pack not only with killer riffs but a sense a humor about the whole thing.  An cornerstone band in that musical universe.

I had seen Carcass a few times in the past but it was a special treat to see them at the smallish Denver venue HQ.  They had been playing much bigger rooms across the country on this tour but we got a more personal experience.  Hell of a show with Headonist, Necrot, and Brujeria as support.

I think HQ is a pretty good sounding room and I think they brought in some extra PA for this night.  Pretty happy with how this turned out.  Enjoy.

Satan’s Satyrs @ Summit Music Hall, Denver CO, 2015-04-10

For today's scare on thatsthethingaboutthat.  Satan!!  Defiantly scary. Satyrs  totally creepy man beasts. But both are fictional characters.  Not much to be scared about really.  I find people that literally believe satan is real and blame him for things real and imagined to be way more terrifying.  BOO!!!

Satan’s Satyrs was an American band from Virginia.  The formed in the late aught and disbanded in 2019.  The main satyr Clayton Burgess, who started the band after being influenced but Saint Vitus, Electric Wizard, and Witchfinder General, ended up playing bass for Electric Wizard from 2013 to 2018,  You can hear the fuzzed out 70s biker vibes in their songs big time.

At this show they opened up for Electric Wizard and had some equipment issues but other wise sounded pretty good.  Enjoy.

Skeleton Key @ Fox Theatre, Boulder CO, 2003-05-10

For today's scare on thatsthethingaboutthat.  Skeletons are defiantly scary.  Skeleton's with keys terrifying!!!   BOO!!  Skeleton Key was a band from New York City that started in the mid 90s. Erik Sanko started the band and was the only constant member over the years.  He described Skeleton Key as using antique microphones, primitive guitars, and unconventional percussion to create a sound that was luxurious, yet affordable.  They remind me a bit of Soul Coughing a little bit.

They released an album on Capital Records in 1997.  In 2002 they released an album on Mike Patton's label Ipecac which is how the ended up on tour opening up for Melvins and Tomahawk.  I've shared the Tomahawk recording before but never the Melvins.  I'll have to get that up at some point.

I missed the beginning of the set for some reason and the last song on the recording fades out.  An incomplete capture but what I did get is pretty entertaining.  Enjoy.

Spirit Possession @ Bluebird Theatre, Denver CO, 2022-07-15

Today's scare on thatsthethingaboutthat.  What would the Halloween season be without some spirits and possessions?  Put them together it's even better.  Spirt Possession from Portland OR live at the Bluebird Theatre back in 2022.  The describe themselves as "raw schizophrenic angular spiraling black metal explodes with razor thrashing guitars, blistering drum violence, commanding torturous vocals, and apocalyptic harsh noise".  BOO!!

Their 1st album hadn't been out very long at the time of this show so they play mostly songs off of it but at the end they play "Practitioners Of Power" which ends up on the 2023 release '...Of The Sign".
All available on bandcamp.  Go support independent music anyway you can.

I ran my mics on a tall stand for this one so I think it captures that night pretty well.  Spirit Possession was part of a killer bill with Elizabeth Colour Wheel, Body Void, Jarhead Fertilizer, Indian, and Primitive Man.  Bonkers show.  Enjoy.

"Demons" @ Lion's Lair, Denver CO, 2002-03-02

Today's scare on thatsthethingaboutthat.  Demons are scary to a lot of people.  Demons are not real though so maybe the scariest thing about this post is Mathias Carlsson's sick guitar tone blasting of the Lion's Lair stage.  "Demons" are from Sweden and came up out of the that rock scene and pre date Hellacopters by a few years.  They are mining that same rock vein.  Loud, fast, punk edged Rock N Roll.

They toured the US heavily in the early aughts. I think mostly due to the fact that American label Gearhead was putting out their albums.  I saw them with New Bomb Turks a couple times.  At this show the opened up for The Dragons along with Land Of El Caminos.  Fun show.

They were still touring behind their LP "Riot Salvation" but they do play a couple songs from the then upcoming LP "Stockholm Slump".   We get a couple choice covers of The Pagans and Misfits.

RAWK!!

Tombs @ Three Kings Tavern, Denver CO, 2019-06-15

For today's scare on thatsthethingaboutthat.  What is scarier than graves?  Tombs of course.  Boo!!
Tombs is a blackened metal with some post-punk tendencies.  They hail from Brooklyn New York and are Mike Hill's band.  They have been around since 2007.  A lot of their early releases are on Relapse so I know I would have heard some of those but I forget what I heard first.  I had never seen them before so I was excited to see them as part of the 2019 Electric Funeral Fest.

In a total coincidence, while I was getting this post ready, I see Tombs has a brand new album coming out tomorrow called Feral Darkness.  The preview tracks sound sick so check that out on bandcamp.
Maybe we will see some live dates behind it.  Good stuff.

Here is their short but sweet set from Denver.  Enjoy.

Smashing Pumpkins @ Balch Fieldhouse, Boulder CO, 2000-05-16

For todays October scare.  What strikes terror in the mind of almost all who hear it?  It's an icy shriek that pierces right to the bone in it's presence.  Is it a Banshee?  Is it a Siren? No it's more terrifying than that.  The one of a kind howl of a young female person.  Are they in danger? Is something horribly wrong?  No it's just excitement to see Billy Corgan.  I descreamafied this as best I could but there is no fully escaping the the creatures of the night.  The tag team of shriekers mostly attack in-between songs so steal yourself for that.

This was called The Sacred and Profane tour and it was to promote the Machina album.  Jimmy Chamberlin was back in the band but Darcy was out and replaced with Melissa Auf der Maur from Hole for this tour.  The band seemed in a pretty good mood compared to other times I had seen them.  No fighting between James Iha and Billy on stage.  Lots of songs from Machina and a bunch of older classics.  Nice acoustic interlude in the middle.  Bullet With Butterfly Wings is played in a heavy doom style and it goes into the oddest cover of Talking Head's "Once in a Lifetime".  Billy announced less than a week after this show that the band was calling it quits.  That lasted until 2007 when he started playing as the Smashing Pumpkins again.

Balch is a big auditorium and sounds wasn't amazing but for that room I think they did a pretty good job and this is an enjoyable listen.  Minus the shrieking of course.  Enjoy.

Wormrot @ HQ, Denver CO, 2025-05-13

Here is another for "scary" October posts.  Worms and Rot and Grindcore!!  Oh My!!

Its been 15 years since I last saw the scary good band Wormrot. It was back in 2010 at Blast'O'Mat.
You can see that here.  WORMROT at Blast'O'Mat 2010

They are from Singapore so it's a big undertaking to even get to the US these days so I wasn't going to miss them when they came to Denver earlier in 2025 with NO/MAS.   They delivered with a catalog spanning set.  We even got an encore with a song from Abuse.  Enjoy.

Atomsmasher @ Bluebird Theatre, Denver CO, 2001-09-13

There is something exquisite about look of horror, revulsions and disgust you will see on a persons face who encounters a noise or power electronics act for the first time when they were seeking out. It's a mix of stepping in dogshit and unexpectedly seeing a corpse at the same time.  As they say it's not for everyone.

James Plotkin (aka Atomsmasher on this night) is an American musician and engineer and is probably best know for his involvement in O.L.D. and Khanate.  He also has some new more ambient electronics releases.  Atomsmasher was a mix of those worlds.  I was looking up the credits for the one CD that I knew about and saw on Discogs that Dave Witte of now Municipal Waste fame played live drums that James Plotkin sampled for 2001 CD.    Dave has been in a ton of bands so not a total surprise.

At this show Atomsmasher was opening for Fantomas.  A good fit I thought but not for everyone.  Mr. Plotkin sat at a table with a laptop for his set.  You can't really hear it on this recording but this asshole up front keep hollering "ctrl alt del" during the set.  Code for rebooting a computer.  Haha.  He also would occasionally flick coins towards James and his laptop.   What a fucker.  James didn't react during his set at all.  At the very end though he pushed his table out of the way and jumped off of the stage and punched the guy in the face.  Totally had it coming.

Planning for Burial @ Hi Dive, Denver CO, 2025-07-03

Here is one for scary October posts.  What is more terrifying then contemplating your eventual demise?
So today I present Planning for Burial from Pennsylvania.  This is a one man act fronted by Thom Wasluck.  He has shirts that says "LOUD / QUIET / LOUD / QUIET" and that is a pretty good description.  He gets labeled gloomgaze, post-metal, shoegaze.

Audio is sounds good I think.  Vocals are a little low but it was loud as hell in there.  Just look at his stage rig in these pictures.  One of the cooler shows I have seen this year.  Enjoy.

Murder City Devils @ Bluebird Theater, Denver CO, 2001-03-08

Unsure on photo credit.  I scrapped these off of the web back in 2001.

Going into October I figured I would post some more "scary" bands and shows.  This one is a triple threat,  Murder is scary, and Devils are scary, and people that don't live in the city are scared of cities.  Boo!!

Today is a show I know I traded on CDR back in the aughts but it doesn't have a full listing on setlist fm so maybe not very many trades.  I had seen the Murder City Devils 2 or 3 time in 2000.  Then twice in 2001.  They toured a lot those years.  This March 2001 show still had Leslie on keyboards.  She quit the band after this tour I think.  When MCD came back in October of 2001 with Botch she was gone. I recall they announced that that was their last tour ever.  The final Seattle show was going to be it. There is an official live album of that October show called R.I.P.

Out of the gate at this show they play a brand new song "That's What You Get" that ends up on the Thelema EP.  They play every song on that EP except for 365 Days this night.  Some of the lyrics are still in flux.  Not sure when the recorded those songs but Thelema didn't come out until September of 2001.  Spencer apologizes before every new song.

They still play a lot of the "hits" off the 1st two albums and I think the sound is pretty good on this one.
Enjoy.

Castle Rat @ The Underworld, London UK, 2025-05-18

Here is another set I captured at Desert Fest London this year.  This time the mighty Castle Rat.  They are a fantasy metal band from Brooklyn NY.  The music is on point for the style but an audio recording doesn't really give you the full experience.  This band puts on a show with costumes and sword fights.  It's quiet a fun spectacle.  If you get a chance to see this band live do it.

Dashboard Confessional @ Tulagi's, Boulder CO, 2001-11-16

I went to this show at Tulagi's in 2001 to see Rival Schools mostly but had never seen Dashboard Confessional so I stuck around and caught their set too.  Not my cup of tea exactly but no doubt Chris Carrabbaj is a talented singer and songwriter.  At this show Chris is joined by Dan Hoerner from Sunny Day Real Estate .

I think I recorded this mostly because I thought I could get some good CDR trades for it.  I don't think that ever happened. I know it was on my trade list but I never transferred it from the MD master until a year or so ago.  And I only just fully listened to it this week.  24 years later.  Too many recordings and not enough time.

Parts at the start of this are a little chatty and He-urricane Bro Dude blows in at about cat 3 and starts yelling out loudly for a song from another Florida band Further Seems Forever.  Chris was involved with that band but only briefly it turns out.  Bro yells out for a song called 'The Moon Is Down" multiple times until Chris very politely tells him that it is not going to happen.  He settles down after that.   It's a sing along crowd but they don't over power the PA.  An enjoyable listen I think.

John Moreland @ Three Kings Tavern, Denver CO, 2014-11-07

I had his 2nd album In The Throes for a while and was lucky enough to catch the amazing Oklahoma singer songwriter John Moreland twice in 2014.  1st in March of 2014 at Illegal Pete's on Broadway in Denver.  Which was great but not a full set.  He came back in November and headlined at Three Kings Tavern.  Killer set and a meh crowd.  It is what it is.
