Today we have a Melvins show from 2003 that I have never shared for some reason.  This was part of the Geek Show tour with Tomahawk and Skeleton Key.  I've posted both of those sets previously.

Melvins were touring behind the album Hostile Ambient Takeover still.  This was an epic night,

Dale Crover (Melvins) @ Marquis Theatre, Denver CO, 2024-07-13

 

Dale Crover of the Melvins was out on tour playing drums for Redd Kross recently.  Before they played Dale came out and DJ's some songs for the crowd.  Including, CW McCall - Convoy, ? - Peanut Butter Jelly Time, Warlock Pinchers - Morrissey Rides A Cockhorse, Spinal Tap - Big Bottom, Jacqueline Taïeb - 7 AM, The Rolling Stones - I Wanna Be Your Man, Sam The Sham & The Pharaoh - Lil' Red Riding Hood, Plague Vendor - Rougher Than Rough, and a couple others I didn't recognize.

After that he got up with an acoustic guitar and played a small selection of his solo songs and a Melvins song.  I've never seen Dale do anything but play drums so it was cool to see him in another light.  Good stuff.

Melvins @ Bluebird Theatre, Denver CO, 1999-07-10

 

I shared the Boulder Fox Theater Melvins show from July 7th 1999 a while back.  This is the first time sharing the July 10th 1999 show from the Bluebird.  

They were touring behind Bootlicker with Kevin Rumantis bass.  I think the Boulder show sounds better.  This one is a little hot on the loud parts.  Very listenable though.  It is what it is.

Melvins @ Mission Ballroom, Denver CO, 2023-05-16

 

I long ago lost track of the number of times that I have seen the Melvins.  The first time was in 1993 on the Houdini tour.  They pretty much come every year to Denver at least once.  Some years they would hit multiple Colorado cities in a row.  So in 30 years I have to be close to seeing them at least 30 time and maybe a few more.

Missed the beginning of this set though.  Lucky for me I knew a couple other tapers in the crowd and I was able to splice in the first 5 songs from my friend Ramiro's recording.  He was a little closer so the sound is a bit different but not in a jarring way.  Quite an enjoyable listen and a hell of a setlist.

Melvins were on tour for the Electroretard album.  Kevin Rutmanis was on bass still.  They opened up with an abbreviated version of "Colossus of Destiny" which they released later that year as a stand alone album featuring a live recording of an extended noise experimental set they recorded in 1998.  My recording fades in on it so I must have missed the beginning.  It's not nearly as torturous at that album.  

Hell of a setlist for this performance.  I think I might have some how missed the last two songs.  Setlist FM has Hung Bunny and Roman Bird Dog listed as being played last on this night.  That might be the case but since it was over 20 years ago now I don't recall.

Melvins were/are taper friendly and the Fox Theatre always was so my friend Tom and I ran a tall stand in the great sounding Fox and I think this came out really nice.  Enjoy.

By 1999 I had seen the Melvins plenty of times.  But this was the first time I made a recording of them.

They were on tour for The Bootlicker album and had Kevin Rutmanis on bass for this run.  The set list is heavy on songs from this era but some old school chestnuts thrown in and their always stellar cover of The Wipers 'Youth Of America'.

As per usual with the Melvins there is not much stage banter.  But at the end Buzz spends a nice long time talking to the crowd, saying Boulder is one of the 3 points of the Bermuda Triangle of hippies (the other two being Eugene OR and San Francisco CA), talking shit about Ozzy using a teleprompter, good stuff.

The set closes with a killer 14 minute long version of Eye Flys and then Dale taunts the crowd for another 5 minutes of occasional drum pounding.  Ah the Melvins.

I've been looking forward to this Savage Imperial Death March tour since it was announced.  What an amazing lineup.  Melt Banana, Melvins, and Napalm Death!!!!

Melvins yet again taking a different lineup on tour.  This time featuring Steven McDonald of Redd Kross fame on bass.  Of course he knocked it out of the park.  Great setlist with career spanning tunes.

I think this recording turned out super nice so enjoy.

Just did a count and I thing this was my 26th or 27th Melvins show.  Can't think of any other band that I have seen as many times.   Still after all these years the Melvins manage to keep it fresh and mix it up just enough to keep it interesting.

I've lost track of the number of times that I have seen the Melvins.  They tour all the time so probably at least once a year since 1995 or so.  Their line-up has changed a bunch over the years but they are always consistently great.

For this 30th Anniversary tour Jared, part of the Big Business duo that joined the Melvins back in 2006, was home with his new baby.  In his place for this tour is Jeff Pinkus of Butthole Surfer fame.  He was a perfect fit.
