Kings X @ Bluebird Theater, Denver CO, 2002-06-19

If your a Kings X fan and you came here hoping for a show with them preforming their hit "Over My Head" you're in for a disappointment.   You hear some guy in the crowd yell out for it about halfway though but the band never plays it.  Maybe they were tired of that number.

I'm not a big fan so I don't have any other King's X live experience to compare it to but from I remember this was a good show.  I was hitting about 200 shows a year in the early aughts so I was going to catch anything and everything.  Including this so some of these shows are a bit of a blur.

I ran my friend Bill's MBHO rig for this.  Must have used a stand but can't recall.  I ended up buying that gear from him a few years later.  As a result I think this sounds really nice.

If you had this from back in the CDR trading days this is a fresh transfer from the masters.  Cleaned up a bit, re-tracked and tagged.  Enjoy.

Motörhead @ Ogden Theatre, Denver CO, 2002-05-10

Here is a major rager.  Motörhead live at the Ogden back in 2002 on tour supporting their Hammered album.  With support from Today Is The Day and Morbid Angel.  Quite a show.

All the hits of course and Sex Pistols cover for good measure.  Lemmy and the band sound great.

Original Sinners @ Bluebird Theater, Denver CO, 2002-08-22

August 22nd 2002 was a marathon concert day.  1st up was Ozzfest at the Pepsi Center with the 2nd stage in the parking lot.  Which I didn't record any of.  I think I caught Hatebreed and Down on the 2nd stage.  Inside my friend Tom's job had a box but it was side stage with not a great view.  We hung out in there and watched Black Label Society, Tommy Lee, maybe Adema.  Then we went up into the nose bleeds to watch Rob Zombie and System of a Down.

I split before Ozzy to head to the Bluebird to catch Exene Cervenka's (from X) aughts sideband Original Sinners.  Which is presented below.  I did record her set.

Then after that I made it to Cricket on the Hill and caught whoever was playing there.  Crimson Haybailer maybe.  It was a long time ago.  Big live music day.

The Original Sinners are a pretty straight ahead rock n roll band.  Bit of a twangy punk edge too.
Fun stuff.  They put out two records before calling it quits.

Exene thanks the crowd for skipping Ozzy to come see her.  Really good set I think.  I enjoyed revisiting this one.

Deftones @ Fillmore, Denver CO, 2000-12-12

Wow so it's the 20th anniversary of Deftones White Pony.  Time sure does fly.  I've never shared this Deftones recording from the White Pony tour.  Now seems like a perfect time.

I remember already being down on the Fillmore as a venue back them.  They had cleaned it up from the Mammoth Event Center days but it was, and still is to some degree a big boomy barn that wasn't intended for super loud rock shows.  And sure enough this recording sounds like the Fillmore.

So I wasn't excited that the show was going to be here.  Especially after seeing the band at the Ogden multiple times.  Always more fun at a smaller venue.  But I can't begrudge a band for getting bigger.  More power to them.

By this time they were all over the radio and the general music listening audience was into the band too and I recall thinking that the crowd was terrible at the time.  Full of KBPI listeners I remember describing it to a friend.  He knew what I was talking about.  I might have just been being an cranky jaded elitist that night too.

Because of that I kind of had a low regard for this recording.  So I never revisited it until recently. And while it's not my best it's listenable.  The vocals clip a little bit when Chino is doing his full on crazy high pitched thing.  But still the music sounds decent and if your a big fan you should get a kick out of it.

Somewhere in the mists of time I decided to record over the minidisc that Taproot's set and the Deftones encore were on.  I looked and I have no CD copy that I could find.  So 7 Words with the Weezer cover stuck in there is missing.  It is what it is.

Opeth @ Universal Lending Pavilion, Denver CO, 2005-07-31

I posted the Clutch set from this day awhile back.  Looking through the archive I figured it would be good to get Opeth up too.

I hadn't listened to this for a long time so I had forgotten how chatty Mikael Åkerfeldt was on this day especially for short 4 song set.  I had also forgotten that the might Gene Hoglan filled in on drum on this tour.  Holy shit!!  This one is an ass kicker.

Enjoy

Peaches @ Ogden Theatre, Denver CO, 2002-10-01

Peaches is an electro dance punk musician from Canada.  Though that is to narrow and explanation for all the art and projects she is involved in.  On this night she was on tour with Queens Of The Stone and and ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead.  Which at the time seemed like an odd pairing.  But in retrospect was a really killer show line up.

I think I might have heard her single Fuck The Pain Away before this show and was aware of who she was but it didn't really prepare me, or most of the crowd, for her set.  Pretty in your face and over the top.  A fair amount of the crowd wasn't into it and expressed that.  Peaches didn't care and talks some shit to a guy up front who turned his back on her.

It had been awhile since I had revisited this recording.  I had forgotten how good it sounded and how fun it was.  Figured I should share it for the first time ever.  So out of the archive and into the wild it goes.  Enjoy.

SPELLS @ 3 Kings Tavern, Denver CO, 2016-11-12

Here was a very fun night at 3 Kings.   Denver's own SPELLS playing 3K for their album release show for Staying In > Going Out.

If you are not aware of this band they play high energy rock n roll in a similar vein as the Buzzcocks or The Briefs.   Clever lyrics and upbeat tunes about being rad, going on vacation, not expending to much effort for the man, and just plain fantastic rock n roll nonsense in the best way.

When possible live they like to set up on the floor of venues right down in the crowd old hard core punk style.  It makes for some memorable shows but it also makes them kind of a hard band to make a decent recording of.

On this night at 3 Kings they set up right below my ceiling mounted microphones that I had mounted up there.  It makes for a nice direct in your face SPELLS experience.

In these crazy times where awesome bands like this can't get out and shake their stuff it is important if you can to support local bands and artists in any way we can.  SPELLS and Snappy Little Numbers have done a lot to support the local scene and community over the years so if you dig this go check out all their releases up on bandcamp. Lots of SPELLS and a ton of other killer bands too.

Burning Airlines @ Ogden Theatre, Denver CO, 2001-09-22

While the band, and J Robbins in particular, sound pretty happy on this recording.  Touring the US in the immediate aftermath of 9/11 with a band named Burning Airlines must have not been a ton of fun.

At this Denver show and I imagine else where the theatre put B.A. up on the marque the day of the show instead of the full name.

I think I missed local support Contender since I have no recording of them.  Oddly I just got a copy of their CD 20 years after the fact.  Good stuff.

Was most excited about seeing Rival Schools again.  They toured like madmen around this time and I caught them with a bunch of different bands.  I have a partial recording of their set from this night.

Had been a big fan of Jawbox and I had never got to see them.  So catching any J Robbins band was a treat.  I love all that guy has done right up to today.  He put out an amazing solo album in 2019.

The Ogden can be a tough room.  The sound quality there has improved greatly over the years with many upgrades.  But It has a tall ceiling and could be a bit muddy and boom sometimes.  I massaged this recording a bit to take those rough edges off.  It's not amazing but very listenable.  Especially if your a big fan.  Enjoy.

Railbenders @ 3 Kings Tavern, Denver CO, 2008-04-18

Another rowdy night at 3 Kings Tavern back in 2008.  This time Denver outlaw country stalwarts the Railbenders playing an monster 2+ hour set.  All the hits.  Some fun covers.  Good times.  Jesse Dayton opened the show as well.  It was honky tonk heaven on S Broadway.

It's a party crowd and it sounds like a party.  Enjoy.
