Minus The Bear @ Fox Theater, Boulder CO, 2005-11-14

With the news of Minus The Bear calling it quits.  I remembered that I had a really nice recording of them from way back at the Fox Theater in Boulder.  One of my favorite sounding rooms in Colorado.

To be honest I went to this show to see Big Business first and foremost but did enjoy Minus The Bear too.    Figured I would share this so any long time fans of the band could get a taste of their early live work.  Enjoy.

Godflesh @ Oriental Theater, Denver CO, 2018-12-07

The first & last  time I saw Godflesh they were part of the 1991 Grindcrusher tour at the Gothic in Englewood CO.  With freaking Napalm Death and Nocturnus!!!!  Took my first wife on one of our early dates.  She was a good sport about it.

I recall at that show a fairly large vocal group of the crowd was not into what Godflesh was laying down.  Fingers in the air.  Some yelling.  Yet the pummeling continued because the band didn't care.  It was a great spectacle.  Always wanted to see them again over the years and it just didn't happen.

I came close this last summer at the Psycho Vegas fest.  But I already knew they were coming to Denver later in the year and chose a meal and some downtime instead.

Fantastic show at the Oriental Theater.  Loud!!!  Amazing setlist.  Enjoy.

The 2018 Xmas Offensive

Happy Holidays from Thats The Thing About That.  Here are some Xmas treats.  A whole bunch of holiday songs that I'm sure your Grandma probably doesn't want to hear.  All the basses are covered.  blasphemy, violence, excessive drinking and drug use, unconventional takes on holiday favorites, unhappiness, grim realities, cringey outdated language, swearing, sex, adultery, bad behavior.
So Enjoy

Nekromantix @ Streets Of London, Denver CO 2018-10-16

I first saw Nekromantix way back in the aughts with Tiger Army.  I thought Tiger Army was totally Warp Tour grade, intro, Psychobilly.  Kinda soft and commercial.  I was there to see Nekromatix first and foremost.

I recall I came to this show dressed business casual since I came from a late work meeting.  Khakis and a polo shirt.  I'm standing in the Bluebird sipping a beer waiting for the show to start. This kid in his howdy dowdy outfit walks up to me and looks me up and down and says "what are you doing here?".  Real warm welcome ya' butterhead swallowneck.  He couldn't hardly believe that I only really came to see the opener Nekromantix.  I might not look the part but don't judge a book by it's cover.  You don't need a costume to be a big fan.

This band has been around for the long haul and are still kicking ass today.  They gave Denver a nice long set of some tire screeching breakneck Psychobilly.  So great.  Loud Fast Rules.

Love seeing shows at Streets of London.  Nice small capacity venue that I think bands are sounding really great in.  My favorite shows are in places like this.  This turned out way better then I even had hoped for.  Love how the coffin bass sounds on this.  Enjoy.

Camper Van Beethoven @ St. Cajetans, Denver CO, 1988-09-12

Here is a neat one out of the Lantz tape box.  A pretty early Camper Van Beethoven show in Denver back in 1988.  They played at St. Cajetans on the Auraria Campus.  It is an old neigborhood church that they saved when the rest of the neighborhood was torn down to make way for the campus.

I'm not sure how many shows actually happened there.  I vaguely recall that there were a few.  A Dr. Know show comes to mind.

This sounds pretty nice given the source and equipment.  A nice selection of fun covers and some lively stage banter.  The band seemed to be enjoying themselves very much.  Fun show.  Enjoy.

Big Business @ Larimer Lounge, Denver CO, 2018-09-01

Big Business was supposed to play a set by the pool at Psycho Vegas but there was some kind of mix up and Zakk Sabbath was setting up.  Not what I was in the mood for in the 100+ degree temps outside so I headed back inside.

Rumors were flying and eventually it all got worked out and they played later that night at the Vinyl room.  I only caught the very last song of their set there unfortunately.  Lucky for me they came to Denver not long after so I was able to catch a full set.

Really fantastic band.  One of my favorites.  Always a treat to see them live.  Enjoy

Queens Of The Stone Age @ Fillmore, Denver CO, 2003-10-03

Ok here is another from the Songs For The Deaf tour.  Almost exactly a year later from the 2002 show at the Ogden.

I recall that we had trouble getting our recording gear in to the Fillmore.  Which wasn't a big surprise.  QOTSA was very taper friendly when a man named Hutch was doing all of their live front of house sound.  At the previous 2002 Ogden show I posted he went above and beyond to help us get in the door with a mic stand and bag of gear.

For this show it was no go at the door.  We walked around to the north side of the Fillmore were the buses were parked and just happened to see Hutch heading to the back stage door.  We yelled out for him and he came over and carried out gear in and set it in the sound booth.

Fillmore remains one of my least favorite sounding rooms in town but this recording turned out really nice.  Again Hutch is a total pro and nailed it.  Really fantastic set list.  Love that they played Auto Pilot.  Mark Lanagen again joins the band for a handful of songs as he did on this tour.

Enjoy

Here is another older QOTSA recording of mine.  This time on the Song For The Deaf tour.

Interesting lineup with And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead and Peaches. I recall the crowd not digging Peaches very much.  I have a recording of her too.  I need to dig that up.

Another stellar set list and Mark Lanagan joins the band for several songs.  Good stuff.  Enjoy.

Nick Oliveri @ Larimer Lounge, Denver CO, 2003-10-04

Sticking to the Queens Of The Stone Age track.  Here is a solo acoustic performance by Nick Oliveri the night after Queens had played at the Fillmore.  Flyer says "first ever US performance" but I have no idea if that is true or not.

Nice sound board sourced recording with songs from all over Nick's catalog.  Mark Lanagan comes out for a handful of songs to lend a hand and sounds as haunting as ever.

I hadn't listened to this one for a bunch of years and had forgotten how fantastic this show was.

Enjoy

Queens Of The Stone Age @ Bluebird Theater, Denver CO, 2000-05-18

Here is a nice early Queens Of The Stone Age show in Denver.  Early 2000 at the Bluebird Theater right before the brilliant Rated R album came out.  So only a few songs from that album get played but the set list is chock full of killer tunes.  Including an ...Millionaire  which doesn't get on an album until Songs For The Deaf.

The band really stretches is out on You Can't Quit Me Babe.  A glorious 9 + minutes.  Love that they opened up with The Bronze.  One of my QOTSA favorites.

I did a fresh transfer from the original master minidisc for this post and put a bit more polish on it.  I know I traded this out in the CDR by mail days but I'm not sure I have ever posted it anywhere.

If you have it on CDR consider this an upgrade.  I'm in the midst of getting all my early Queens recordings posted so watch this space for more.  Enjoy.

Getting excited to see The Hellacopters at the Psycho Las Vegas fest this weekend.  Been a long time and I didn't think that I would ever get another chance.

I recall that they came to Denver in 2006 with Nebula but for some reason that I can't remember I missed that show.  So this show at the Ogden Theater back in 2002 is the last time I saw the band.

The Ogden is a big barn so this is what it is.  Enjoy.

Supersuckers @ Tanquerayz, Fort Collins CO, 1993-08-24

Here is another show from the Lantz archive.  This time the self proclaimed Greatest Rock N Roll Band in the World!!  The Supersuckers!!!

Way back in 93' at the long defunct Fort Collins club Tanquerayz (that used to be called the Library before that) The Supersuckers rolled through on tour for Smoke Of Hell.  Possibly on tour with Gas Huffer.

The set list is classic Supersuckers mostly off Smoke Of Hell and older stuff.  They do bust out their cover of Ice Cube's Dead Homiez and a rare song Second Cousin.  That only appeared officially as the bonus track on the Japaneses CD of La Mano Cornuda.  So that is kind of a treat even if it's not that great of a song.

Rowdy crowd so this one has plenty of atmosphere.  Pretty decent sound though.  Enjoy.

I saw Keith Morris in some Youtube video recently and it got me to thinking about this show.  It was my first time seeing the Circle Jerks after being a fan for a log time.  They did not disappoint. Just look at the setlist!!

Keith talks a lot and seems optimistic that they are going to record a new Circle Jerk record really soon.  Well that never happened.  Maybe it was for the best.  OFF!!  might never have formed otherwise.

My buddy Tom and I recorded this show and I think it turned out really nice.  Enjoy

Alice Donut @ Lory Student Center, Ft Collins CO, 1991-10-10

Another 1st gen master out of the Lantz tapes.  Real gem here if your into Alice Donut or just early 90s weirdo rock.  This will fit the bill.

I remember hearing a little Alice Donut back then and liking it well enough but I never really took the plunge.  After hearing this insanity I'm going to need to explore their back catalog right away and play some catch up.

Hats off again to Lantz Barbour.  He did a really great job with the gear he had.

Pretty intense right out of the gate.  Some fun covers in this set too.  Their take on War Pigs is....something else.  The Tom Waits cover of What Keeps Mankind Alive into the Dead Kennedys song Halloween is really fantastic.  Enjoy

Fu Manchu @ Streets Of London, Denver CO, 2018-05-18

I'm sure I probably first heard Fu Manchu like a lot of people.  Man's Ruin releases at the height of that "stoner rock" scene.  So many great bands were birthed from the time.

Caught them live many times back then but it has been more than a decade at least since I have seen them live.  They still sounded as great as ever.  Fun to see them in such a small place like Streets of London.  I'm loving seeing shows there.

They upped the PA for these shows and I think this sounds really nice for a small club recording.  There was a super fan up front requesting some oldies.  We got treated to the rarely played 'Time Tp Fly' and 'Superbird'.  Enjoy

Hot Snakes @ Oriental Theater, Denver CO, 2018-05-18

Very few bands can take as long of a break as the Hot Snakes did and come back sounding better than ever but that is just what they did.  I put their new album Jericho Sirens in my top 5 records of the year easily.

The prospect of them playing live again was just as exciting and of course they delivered.  What a great show.  The last time I had seen them was in 2004 at the Bluebird.  Hopefully I won't have to wait another 14 years to catch them again.

Enjoy

Murder City Devil @ Psycho Vegas, Las Vegas NV, 2017-08-20

The Psycho Vegas festival is mostly a heavy metal kind of event.  But the root of most of that music is just good ol' rock n roll.  Which is why I didn't think it was odd that Murder City Devils were one of the first bands announced for the 2017 line up.  Personally I was stoked.  Based on the number of people that came out to see them on that Sunday afternoon maybe most people weren't. Their loss.

It was weird seeing them up on a giant stage with big Vegas lights.  Having mostly seen them in their heyday playing at dirty dive bars and smaller theater.  They delivered the rock though and the faithful that were in attendance were treated to a fantastic setlist spanning their entire discography.

Enjoy
