Anthrax @ The Starlight, Ft Collins, CO 2001-09-12

Day after the 9-11 that no one is going to forget.  Didn't think the show was going to happen at all.
Band couldn't fly home so they decided to forge ahead and play some shows.  There is a little bit of talk about current events.  Nothing to heavy though.  This is late period John Bush Anthrax and the setlist is heavy with those songs.

Not the best recording either.  B- or a C+ maybe.  Vocals are pretty clear through out.
The show is incomplete do to some bad media issues.  A few songs fade out or fade in.
It is what it is.  By a fan for the fans.  Check it out.

Girls Against Boys @ The Bluebird 2002-09-10

Was really into these guys back in the 90's through early 00's.  I picked up their release Freak*on*ica the other day on vinyl and really enjoyed hearing it again.  Even if that was their sell out major label release.

I know most folks prefer their older efforts.  This set has a mix of old and new stuff from their release at the time You Can't Fight What You Can't See.

Don't remember much about this show but I did enjoy hearing it back for the first time in 11 + years.

Check it out.

16 Horsepower @ The Ogden, 2000-07-18

I picked up the brand new Wovenhand release, The Laughing Stalk, the other day at Wax Trax here in Denver.  What a nice packaging.  Really striking.  And the music is as good or better then anything they have ever done in my book.  Seriously worth checking out.

Upon my first listen I started kicking myself for not making it out to their recent Denver show.  From the reviews I read it was a great show.  I had no doubts that it was going to be but circumstances conspired against me and I couldn't make it.

That weekend got me thinking about the bands pedigree and how great 16 Horsepower was live.
I dug out my old master of my recording of their performance at the Ogden Theater in Denver way back on July 18th 2000.  It was the first time I had seen them.  I came a little late to the 16HP party.

Got to see them several other times.  Always a treat.

I traded this out a fair amount back in the, CDRs in the mail, trading days so it is possible that you have heard this.  This post is a fresh transfer from the original masters.  Hope you enjoy it.

Death Grips @ Larimer Lounge, 2012-11-23

I think I heard about these guys on Vice magazine back in 2011 or so, maybe somewhere else, doesn't really matter.  I saw a link to a video of a song on their release Exmilitary.  I was immediately struck by dense dark production.  It reminded me of the Bomb Squad production on old Public Enemy records.

MC Ride isn't as wordy as Chuck D though.  It's more of a violent, dark, stream of consciousness.  I love weird noisy stuff so I was hooked right away.  Zach Hill formerly of Hella plays drums on the albums and live and that live percussion is what really made the show for me.  Check it out.

Faith No More @ The Gothic, 1993-02-06

What a hell of a show this was.  Kyuss touring behind Blues For The Red Sun.  Babes in Toyland had released Fontanelle not long before this and the might Faith No More has just released Angel Dust.

This isn't my recording so hats off to the original taper who ever that may be.  This is a pretty great sounding soundboard tape.  Good stuff.

Billy Joe Shaver @ The Lion's Lair, 2003-04-06

Presenting the living country legend Billy Joe Shaver at the (Worlds Famous) Lion's Lair in Denver Colorado. Capacity at the Lair at the time was about 100. It's a small room with the bar right in the center. Maybe 25 bar stools ringed the bar and the stage was right behind the bar. Front row seats with drink service.

This was one of those show where I felt kind of bad and totally privileged at the same time. The show being on a Sunday night might have contributed to a light turnout but just enough people showed up to fill every bar seat. I couldn't believe that Denver seemed to not know who Billy Joe was or didn't care. Billy Joe didn't seem to care about the small turn out though. He played a great set of songs and told some great stories.

Towards the end he told the audience that he will play one more song if we would all stand up. Of course everyone stands up and they start the next song. Not far into it he told us all that we could sit back down. What a sweetheart.

Really nice sounding soundboard of this performance. This show is in the top five list of my favorite recordings. Hope you enjoy it.

Mike Patton and Rahzel @ The Fox, 2003-11-06

"Let me ask you a question?  You've heard of the movie Deliverance right?   Weeeeeeeeeee!!!!
Alright, Well you know that tune Dueling Banjos?  Tonight what your going to get is dueling Man Hoes"

That is Mike Patton's introduction to this performance.  Not sure how rehearsed this was and how much is just spontaneous.  Rahzel does his amazing human beat boxing and Mr. Patton does his odd vocals things and bits of popular songs.  Salt and Pepper and 50 Cent are referenced.  Part of the show Mike tunes around on the radio and the riff on some of what he dials in.  It's an hour of awesome weirdness.

Rahzel and Mike have preformed together on multiple occasions before and since this performance.  Based on a cursory Google search they performed at Coachella in 2009.  Later in this show from Boulder Rahzel mentions that they will be having a new album come out soon but sadly no album has ever been release.  The way Rahzel talks it sounds like it was s done deal but who knows.

I had no idea how to label these tracks with song titles so I didn't bother.  There are just track splits between obvious transition points.  Check it out.

I posted this as a torrent some where way back in 2003 so if you have that source know that this is a fresh transfer from the master and I did a fresh mastering job on it as well.  Consider it an upgrade.

The Revival Tour @ The Marquis, Denver CO 2008-10-23

Chuck Ragan took this first incarnation of the Revival tour out on the road in fall of 2008.  Chuck was joined on the tour at this date by Ben Nichols of Lucero, Tim Barry of Avail, Austin Lucas, Jon Snodgrass of Drag The River, Todd Beene, Jon Gaunt, & Digger Barne.  All artist who are doing their own modern take on folk music.  Each of the musicians took turns playing their own sets and continuously joined each other on stage through out the night.

This show was a monster.  Clocking in at over 3 hours of non-stop music.  That is a long show.  More then drifting into jam bad territory length.  I recall that while the show was going on it didn't seem that long.  Just one entertaining moment after the next.

Here is my recording of the event.

Split Lip Rayfield @ The Bluebird, 2006-09-02

Wow it has been 6 years since this show.  Doesn't seem that long at all.  I was obsessed with this band from the very first time that I saw them.  Just an electrifying live act.  If you not familiar with the band I have described them in the past as the Slayer of bluegrass.  Due to both the speed at which they play and some of the songs subject matter.  Some pretty dark stuff for such happy sounding music.  Right up my alley though so no wonder it clicked.

This show is from their last tour with Kirk Rundstrom in the band.  He found out he had esophageal cancer on the eve of an previous Denver show.  He underwent treatment but when the prognosis didn't change he decided to stop the therapy that was just making him sick and go on tour.  He look frail but he was smiling and really gave it his all.  Rest In Peace Kirk.  You are missed.

Drag The River, Live Archive Vol.1, Scattered, Country, and Covered

Like a lot of kids I had no time for my Mom’s music once I was a teenage.  I grew up in a trailer park Cheyenne Wyoming and my Mom’s taste in music leaned to the 70’ country side of things.  I heard tons of Willie, Waylon, Johnny Paycheck, Joe South, Jerry Jeff Walker, Johnny Horton, Hank Williams, basically all the greats.  On the other hand I know that she like the Beatles as much as she liked Willie Nelson.

I spent the 80’s and 90’s listening to all variety of music that wasn’t remotely country sounding.  Hair metal, thrash metal, doom, industrial, 90’s alternative, hardcore, indie rock stuff.  It took the Supersuckers releasing a country album, and seeing Denver’s own Slim Cessna to perk my ear up to anything that sounded remotely twangy again.

As I was sticking my toe back in to those musical waters I discovered Drag The River.  I saw then open for two different shows with in a week of each other and I was hooked.  If I recall correctly they were on the bill with Slim Cessna one night and BR549 the other.  That was it.  I bought what was their only release at the time Hobo Demos and was hooked.  Closed came out not too long after that and I’ve never looked back.
I've been a big fan ever since.  I only regret that I didn't catch on sooner.

My discovery of Drag The River also coincided with the start of my hobby of recording audio of live shows.  I started kind of primitively with some lower end recording devices and microphones that I clipped to my glasses.  It wasn’t until a few years later that I discovered that DTR didn’t mind being recorded and I stepped up the production values with better microphones and recording techniques.

Back in the early 00’s I saw Drag The River so many times that I would only recorded every other show.  Still I managed to amass a pretty big archive of live recordings.  I would estimate that I have 30 or 40 recordings of the band.  That includes various incarnations of the band, Jon and Chad sets, shows where Chad plays bass, solo shows from both Jon and Chad.

This is a set of recordings from 2001 to 2004 mostly with a couple slightly newer ones thrown in too.  Most of these recordings are mine but some where done by other people.  I know one of the Fox shows was recorded by Jimmy Nomad.  They other credits escape me.  Thanks to the other tapers that contributed though.

Tracks were picked based on various criteria.  Some are songs that they just never play any more.  Some are just takes of songs that I particularly loved.  I was trying to come up with a summation of these when I was listening through the other night and ended up with a pretty free form description.

Soundboards, room mics, combinations of the two.
Hot shows, drunken nights, guest shots & shout outs
1st time and maybe last times for some songs
Chatty dicks, drunk chicks & dudes
Flubbed lines, fun ad libs, and angry bartenders

I had originally combined these tracks for Jon Snodgrass to check out. Being that his perspective on these songs and shows is from a performers stand point he didn’t fall in love with all of these takes.  He hears and remembers things that I just don’t pick up on from a fan’s perspective.  But he gave me his blessing to go ahead and post it up for you all to check out.  He would like you to know that he still feels bad for dedicating their set at the Stardust Lounge in Downey California to the bartender.  He was just trying to be nice but it turned out that she really did hate live music and just got more infuriated.

Thanks to Jon Snodgrass and Chad Price for all the years of entertainment and for basically becoming the soundtrack to my existence for a good part of this century.  Thanks to all of the other people that have been in the band as well.  J.J. Nobody, Zach Boddicker, Dave Barker, Casey Prestwood, Paul Rucker, Karl Alvarez, and anyone else that I have forgotten to put on this list.

Check out their goings on here
http://www.dragtheriver.com/

And go buy some of their music here.
http://www.dragtheriver.com/merchandise.htm

They are recording a new album at the moment and could use the funds.

So here is it warts and all.  A for the fans by the fans Drag The River compilation.  Hope you enjoy it. Dan Utter and I did a lot of work listening to all of these shows.  Picking out the takes that we found the most interesting and remastering the raw originals WAVs.  Here is what Dan himself has to say about it.
This was mastered in a house high on a mountain, a multi month labor of love.  All tracks were converted to 8 track stereo.  De-crackled, De-hummed, De-essed and de noised to the best level I could. And finally put back together warts and all. There are alot of years here and a few incarnations of the band.  A great band.  One that brought back my interest in music after being burned out from it in Seattle in the 90's.    Thanks buddies

Thanks to Victoria Woodworth for her iron stomach and the photo of the Waffle House dish.

Reverend Beat-Man & Delaney Davidson @ Old Curtis Street 2010-07-16

If you not familiar with this Swiss dynamo get familiar.  Often time he plays as a one man band but on this night he was joined by New Zealand native Delaney Davidson..  They traded songs and augmented each others performance.  For fans of blues trash.  Black Keys, Immortal Lee County Killers, White Stripes.

This is from a few years ago.  Seems like he is due for another visit stateside.  Fingers crossed.

Melvins Lite live in Cheyenne Wyoming 2012-09-11

So this incarnation of the Melvins, dubed Melvins Lite, is on a 51 shows in 51 days tour.  They are attempting to play a show in all 50 states and Washington DC in 51 days.  This show was #7 in that trek.

I grew up about a mile from the venue in Cheyenne Wyoming.  I don't recall any good shows coming to town way back when.  The closest we got was when Night Ranger came to town during Frontier Days one year and that hardly counts.  The Melvins had never played in Wyoming so even though I could have seen them the next night in Denver I just figured why not go check them out in my home state.

John Doe live @ Wax Trax 2000-08-28

Here is another on from the vaults.  This will be 12 years old in a couple weeks.  John had played a show at the Lion's Lair the night before.  I recall I was a little unsure when he was supposed to be playing at Wax Trax so I ditched out of work and took a really long lunch so I wouldn't miss it.  No X songs but all his material is pretty strong.  Very nice Merle Haggard cover along with some Knitters action at the end.

Obits live @ The Marquis Theater, Denver, CO 2012-08-04

The Obits are Rick Froberg's newest band.  His previous bands include The Hot Snakes, Drive Like Jehu, and Pitchfork.  If you are a fan of any of those projects then this is right up your alley.  Obits have been around since 2006 but this marked their first Denver appearance.  As far as I know. They just don't tour that often so in my mind this was a show not to be missed.  I guess the rest of Denver didn't feel the same way because the Marquis was maybe 1/3 full.   Y'all missed out because it was a hell of a show.

The band was nice enough to give me permission to record before hand.  Hats off guys.  Thanks so much.

Sean Wheeler and Zander Schloss @ The Bluebird 2012-05-20

Where you a Throw Rag fan?  Been wondering what the Captain has been up too?  Well he has joined up with punk rock alumni Zander Schloss.  He played bass in the Circle Jerks and Weirdos.  He was Otto's neardy friend Kevin in Repoman.  Feeling 7up anyone?  It just him and Sean Wheeler belting out the lonesome highway laments.  I hella dig it.   This is the duo opening up for Mark Lanegan back in May.
Check it out.

NOFX @ The Ogden, Denver CO, 2002-03-30

Here is an old one out the the archive.  NOFX at the Ogden Theater back at the end of March 2002.
Fun show even if the politics are a little dated.  They played their anti George Bush song "Idiot Son Of An Asshole".  Holds up pretty well I guess since people still think that guy is a dick.

Enjoy

The Cult @ The Ogden, Denver, CO 2012-05-30

It's been a long time since I  last saw the Cult.  22 years give or take.  I'd say that they have aged pretty well.
Nice selection of the hits and some new numbers.

Against Me! @ The Ogden, Denver, CO 2012-05-30

Was surprised to see these guys opening up for the Cult.  They could headline the Ogden themselves at this point.  The new drummer is kicking ass.  Really good set from Against Me!.  Wish they had played a bit longer.
Oh well.  Enjoy.

Mark Lanegan Band @ The Bluebird, Denver,CO 2012-05-20

Went into this show with low expectations.  I had heard his new album and thought it was good but it didn't grab me right away.  Still he hardly ever tours the USA so when I saw he was coming to town I knew that I needed to go check it out.  Glad I went.  As often happens I don't always connect with a song until I hear it live.  Really good show.  Check it out.

Mariachi El Bronx @ The Fox 2012-05-17

I just can not get enough of this band.  Not something I ever thought I would be saying about a mariachi band but the world is a weird and wondrous place that's full of surprises.  This is a recording of their recent performance at the lovely Fox Theater in Boulder, Colorado.  I think it turned out really nice.  Enjoy.
