Today Is The Day @ The Marquis, Denver, CO 2017-07-26

This band certainly isn't for everyone.  I have some friends who are fans of more gently music that Today Is The Day would seriously bum out.  It's ugly and visceral in away that is practically confrontational. It feels a bit dangerous.   And I mean all  that in the most complimentary way possible.  Love TITD a ton.

Rest of Denver wasn't feeling it though.  Only about 50 or so folks showed up.  It was a week night. I get it.  I'm guilty of saying "fuck it" and bailing on weekday shows pretty often.  Y'all missed out though.

Fantastic opening sets from Denver Glacial Tomb and out of towners Kayo Dot.  TITD was on tour for the 20th anniversary of their groundbreaking album Temple Of The Morning Star.  Played a large amount of songs from that release and a career spanning mix of additional numbers.  Very satisfying evening of music.

Steve Austin seemed genuinely ok with the small turn out and had nice things to say about Denver.

Buy their records.  Go see them live.  I saw in Decibel that the are working on getting a new album out soon too.  The Today Is The Day train powers on.

Corky Laing's Mountain @ Three Kings Tavern, Denver CO, 2017-06-16

Here is the headliner of the first night of the Electric Funeral Fest Vol.2.  Drummer extraordinaire Corky Laing playing songs from Mountain and other projects he has been involved in through out the years.

Corky has an extensive discography and has a million great stories.  Some of which he told on this night.  I see that him and Leslie West wrote a book about their history called Nantucket Sleighride and Other Mountain on-the-Road Stories.  I'll bet that is a good read.

He brought along a pretty hot shit band and had a very enthusiastic reception from the late night crowd.  I saw a bunch of people wearing Mountain shirts at the Fest the next day.

Good times great oldies.  Enjoy

Whores @ Hi Dive, Denver CO, 2017-05-29

So many great tours roll through Denver.  It's impossible to catch them all.  Sometime fantastic shows get skipped for other shows and sometimes you just can't make it.

Grateful to Jim Hucks for capturing the Whores at the Hi Dive back at the end of May and for letting me share it with y'all

Reminds me a lot of all the old Amphetamine Reptile bands of yore that I loved so much.  Going to make sure I see these guys live next time they come to town.

Kinky Friedman @ The Oriental Theater, Denver CO, 2017-05-12

Being a fan of Waylon and Willie and their Texas associations.  I've had Kinky Friedman on my radar for awhile.  Missed him coming through town the last few times and figured it was about time I caught him live.

Despite my excitement I ended up missing the first 15 or so minutes of his set.  What I did see was pretty great.  Super quite respectful crowd.  You could literally hear a pin drop.

His delivery of The Ballad of Ira Hayes is downright chilling.  Kinky tells a pretty interesting story about how he found out Nelson Mandela had been a fan of his too.  Enjoy

Thanks to James Lambert for the use of his photos.

SubRosa @ Denver Black Sky IV, Englewood CO, 2016-12-10

Short but sweet set from these Salt Lake City doom merchants.  This was my first time catching them live.  Really enjoyed it.  Looking forward to catching them with Yob at the Psycho Vegas fest in August.

You can't really hear it on the recording thank goodness.  But during the real quite part towards the end of Wound some jackass standing up near the stage starts loud talking at the band.  "you're overrated and boring....."  and a bunch of other derogatory shit talking.  Some one eventually tells him to shut the fuck up.  What a dick.  Save it for the comments sections or if you had any balls at all go find them at the merch table after their set and tell them how you feel to their face.  Not that a coward heckler would ever do that.

Anyway I think this turned out really nice and if your into the doom metal genre check this out.

Speedealer @ Streets Of London, Denver CO 2017-05-21

I never missed a chance to catch these guys back in the aughts.  Many a sweaty night at the 15th Street Tavern.  Great times.

Towards the end of last year I saw that they were playing shows again.  Figured it was only a matter of time before the made it back to Denver.

The 15th Street Tavern is long gone but Streets of London was a perfect venue to host their triumphant return.  They still got it.

Scott H. Biram @ Three Kings Tavern, Denver CO, 2017-03-25

I first caught Scott H. Biram back in 2004 opening up for Hank Williams III.  Have always tried to see him when he came through town ever since.  Man is a bundle of dynamite.  It's almost hard to believe one guy is pumping out so much energy.  Truly explosive.

This was a wild Saturday night.  The crowd and bands were getting loose.  So pardon the drunk banter and stick around for the hard hitting metal blues.  Think this one sounds might nice. Enjoy

The Quadrajets @ The Starlight, Ft Collins, CO, 1999-05-22

Dddddaaaaaammmmmmnnnnnnnnn!!!!!!!!   The Quadrajets were a high octane rock n roll wrecking crew.  Was lucky to catch them live only once.  On the same bill with the mighty Hellacopters and The Nomads.

That was a hell of a Rawk show.  Not a lot of live Quadrajets stuff out there so I figured I would release this upon the world.  Not amazing quality but very listenable.  Enjoy.

Youth Code @ Three Kings Tavern, Denver CO, 2014-02-06

I have a very enthusiastic friend who is always telling me X band is the best thing he's ever heard.  Sometimes I think he's full of shit.  It's going to take more than his endorsement to get me into K-pop or Kayne West.

But he had been raving about this band named Youth Code for months.  When I finally let him play me some I was impressed.  To our good fortune they were scheduled to play at our local Three Kings Tavern soon after that.

So on a cold snowy night in February of 2014 we walked on over and had our minds blown. Been a big fan ever since.  This was their 1st ever Denver appearance and I think the recording turned out great.  Enjoy.

Wovenhand @ The Marquis Theater, Denver CO, 2017-04-28

I had been looking forward to this show for awhile.  Even though Denver is their home base Wovenhand shows are pretty few and far between.  I had missed the last one at the Bluebird a year or so ago. It had been since the Byers Riotfest in 2013 that I had caught them live.

Wovenhand's sound has evolved quite a bit over the years.  From their quiet start as a two piece to the full on hypnotic rock squall that it has become.  I know that some of the fans of the earlier stuff, and David Eugene Edwards previous band Sixteen Horsepower, aren't on board with this new direction.
I get it.  It's pretty loud. But I don't think it's that far removed from their core sound.  When you hear it you know exactly who it is.

I for one was stoked when Chuck French and Neil Keener from Planes Mistaken For Stars joined the band.  My expectations of this union have more than been met.  They are a fierce live unit and the recorded out put is amazing.

If your in Eastern Europe or the Netherlands they are headed your way through the month of May.  I recommend trying to catch them live.

This is the Denver tour warm up show and I think the recording turned out really nice.  Enjoy.

Brant Bjork @ The Marquis Theater, Denver CO, 2017-04-16

I've been a Brant Bjork fan for a long time and pretty much celebrate his entire catalog.  The man crushes it live too.  On this tour we got an added bonus.  Sean Wheeler from Throw Rag fame was on tour with him and got on stage to handle some of the vocal duties for a few songs.  Good time.

I think this turned out really nice.  Enjoy.

The Reverend Horton Heat @ The Larimer Lounge, Denver CO, 2017-02-21

I've seen the Reverend Horton Heat a whole shit ton of times so when these shows came up I was interested but not bummed that I wasn't going to make it.  Just too busy having just moved to a new place the week before.

Then I started hearing about the shows from friends and it sounded like a really good time.

Lucky for me my buddy Jim was at the shows and recorded it.  He sent it to me to share with the rest of y'all.

Nice mix of old and new from the Rev and some fun stage banter.  About mid set Jello Biafra comes out and sings some songs with the RHH including some Dead Kennedy's songs!!  He has a couple good stories too.

Mike Ness @ The Fox Theater, Boulder CO, 1999-11-16

Sorry for the long time between posts on here.  I moved recently and that took up a lot of my time for the last month or two.

Here is a nice recording of Mike Ness on the Under The Influences tour for his string of cover heavy solo albums.  I really enjoyed those CDs when the came out.  Was talking about this show with some one not to long ago so I pulled it out of the archive and decided to share it.

Track 12 where Mr. Ness overreacts to a ball cap being tossed up on stage and ends with saying "remember what happened in Denver" can use a bit of an explanation.

Mike Ness played in Denver back in the summer of 1999 on this same tour.  During his set there were some jackasses that where pushing around some guy in the crowd.  All the while flipping of Mike Ness and generally being assholes.  Early into his set Mike says "If I see anymore of the two guys against 1 guy shit I'll come down there and take care of you both".  The song starts but before long Mike throws down his guitar and leaps over the barricade swinging.  He gets in the guys faces but security pulls them apart and Mike gets back on stage.  Oddly security doesn't throw out the two trouble makers.

Mike then proceeds to talk shit to these two knuckleheads for what seemed like 10 minutes.  They start into another song and he throws down his guitar again and jumps back over the barricade followed by the drummer.  This time security drags the two guys out the side door of the Ogden followed by the entire band.  10 minutes go by no one inside is sure what is going on but the band all come back out on stage and the show goes on.  Pretty wild.

The Hellacopters @ The Starlight, Ft Collins CO, 1999-05-22

I heard the news today that Robert "Strängen" Dahlqvist of the Hellacopters passed away at the young age of 40 recently.  Totally bummer news.  At the height of their powers I say they were one of the greatest rock n roll bands ever.  They called it quits back in 2008 but I still listen to their records all the time.  Such a great band.

They didn't make it over to the USA very often so I count myself lucky that I was able to catch them live twice while they were still rawking!

I've been meaning to post this for awhile.  This was the first time I caught The Hellacopters live.  What a better place then the intimate confines of the old Starlight in Ft Collins Colorado.  I believe that they played in Denver the night before and then hit Ft Collins on Saturday night.  With the Nomads and the freakin Quadrajets!!!   Holy hell what a night of Rock N Roll.

At the beginning of 'Bore Me' Nicke Andersson dedicates it to American food.  At the end of the song and before 'City Slang' Nicke says he didn't want to offend anyone and mentions that they love Waffle House.  Robert chimes in "they have crazy teeth and bad service".  Pretty funny.

Anyway here is a rad sounding board recording of The Hellacopters tearing it up that night in Ft Collins.

Enjoy.  R.I.P.  Robert Dahlqvist

Mr Bungle @ Fillmore, Denver CO, 2000-01-29

Having seen Mr Bungle a couple of times headlining during the 90s it was kind of weird to see them on a package tour like this.  With System Of A Down, Incubus, and Puya.

While the bands on the bill might have been fans most of the SOAD and Incubus radio rock fans decidedly were not.  At this Denver shown people chanted for SOAD.  Threw coins at the band while they were playing.  Generally were not into it.

Mr. Bungle had to have figured that this was going to happen.  They all dressed in costumes.  I tried to find some pictures but didn't really come up with anything good.  I recall one was dress as a dutch girl.  I think one of them was dressed like general Custer.  At one point I think it was Trevor Dunn asks the crowd if there is anyone that would let him eat their ass for a back stage pass.

Short set but a nice mix of songs from all across their catalog.  Enjoy.
