X @ The Coach House, San Juan Capistrano CA. 1985-09-15

Here is another cassette from the Kat Georges archive.  This time an uncirculated X show from 1985 at The Coach House in San Juan Capistrano California.   Kat's tape and J card were undated so I'm not 100% sure of the 15th being correct.   On setlist FM they list a September 13th show in San Diego, and a September 14th show in Irvine.   There is a poster for that one.

So I think it is safe to assume that this Coach House show was on the 15th or sometime shortly there after.  The sound quality is not good.  It's a rough listen and what I would call a big fan only recording.  Interesting setlist with a fair about of banter from John and Excene.  Even though the quality is poor it is an uncirculated recording and I figured I would get it out into the world.

Southern Culture On The Skids @ LODO Music Fest, Denver CO, 2000-07-07

Southern Culture On The Skids are a really fun band from Chapel Hill North Carolina.  They kind of had a hit with their song Camel Walk in the mid 90s.  They are a bunch of fantastic releases and are still at it today touring and putting out new albums.

This show on the Liquored Up and Lacquered Down tour as a part of the LODO Music Fest that used to be held in downtown Denver by the baseball park.   I've already posted Mojo Nixon's set from this day.  Decided I need to get this one up too.

Crowd is a bit chatty and recording outside presents unique challenges but I think it sounds ok.  Been fun revisiting this show.   I know I traded this out on CDR to some small degree but this is a new transfer from the MD master compared to that  version.  Enjoy.

Talking Heads @ Long Beach Arena, Long Beach CA, 1983-12-08

Here is another out of the Kat Georges cassette archive.  This time it's another of her masters.  A partial recording of Talking Heads live at Long Beach Arena in December of 1983.  Talking Heads were on tour supporting the album 'Speaking in Tounges' this year.   A few days after this show they played for 4 nights at the Pantages Theatre in Hollywood and filmed the 'Stop Making Sense' movie.

This partial set is a a preview of those shows with basically the same setlist.   Kat only captured the first 46 minutes of the show.  But that part is jam packed with some greatness.   Sound is pretty nice on this one.  Crowd a bit chatty but a fun listen.  Enjoy.

Ultrabomb @ HQ, Denver CO, 2023-05-31

Ultrabomb is a punk rock trip consisting of some real heavy hitters.  Greg Norton from Hüsker Dü, Finny McConnell from The Mahones, and Jamie Oliver from the U.K Subs, and others.

They have just put out a fantastic new album called "Time To Burn".  Totally worth your time to seek out.  They are written a killer batch of new songs together.   Lots of those are featured during this set.

For a whole variety of reasons this show was criminally under attended.  By the time Ultrabomb took the stage there was about 20 of us there to watch.  I felt bad that Denver couldn't  rally for such a great show.   But this one flew under everyone's radar I guess.    They missed out.

Band didn't seem to mind and it was pretty amazing to get such an intimate show.  One I will never forget.  The set is full of new songs but we get 6 Hüsker Dü songs, a Mahones song, a UK Subs song, and a Dead Boys cover.   What a hell of a set!

As always go support independent music by going to show, buying merch from bands you like.  At shows and any way you can do it.  It's tougher than ever to make a go of it in the arts and artists need out support more than ever.   Music makes all of our lives better I think.   Enjoy.

The Knitters @ Cathay de Grande, Los Angeles CA, 1983-07-26 (2nd show)

Abigail Johnson photo credit

Here is another cassette master from the Kat George archive.  This time it's a show that she didn't record but a friend of hers did.  I suspect this is the 1st or 2nd gen copy made from the master cassette.

This was the Knitters 2nd official show ever.  The Knitters were a group started by X members John Doe and Excene Cervenka in 1982. They were joined by Dave Alvin.  It's said they started this rootsy country folk act as a response to the increasingly violent and hardcore turn the punk scene had taken around this time.  I think that they just really loved playing it and had more to do with it ultimately.

X members were older than a lot of the up and coming punk scene and had grown up listening to folk, country, 60s bands, even the Doors. The very things punk supposedly stood against. There was always that kind of roots edge to X's punk sound.

In 2000 I saw John Doe play an afternoon instore set at Waxtrax Records in Denver's Capital Hill neighborhood.    He played the Silver Wings cover that day too and said a lot of his motivation to get into playing music to start with stemmed from wanting to be like Merle Haggard.
That show is HERE if you want to listen.

I had been part of sharing this recording before way back in 2005ish.   It got torrented on DIME back then  I lost all of those original files years ago and made a fresh transfer of this show with my new setup after rediscovering these tapes in a box not long ago.   I have to assume this is an upgrade to that original file set.   It's still a audience recording in a not ideal for sound room.  The quieter numbers  sound the best.  It gets a bit blown out on the louder numbers.  Enjoy

Bardo Pond @ 15th Street Tavern, Denver CO, 2002-03-08

Bardo Pond, if your unfamiliar, is an American psychedelic rock band from Pennsylvania.  Formed in 1991 and still at it to this day.  The open up with a Spaceman 3 cover on this night if that give you any idea where they are coming from.  They were still touring behind their Dilate album at this show.

I posted a few tracks from this show in my Best of the 15th Street comp.  Here is the rest of the show for your listening enjoyment.
