Gerechtigkeits Liga @ Denver Art Observatory, Denver CO, 1985-07-16

 


Here is an interesting recording out of the archive of Lantz Barbour.  Going way back.  He captured audio of pioneering German industrial / ambient / experimental duo Gerechtigkeits Liga at Denver Art Observatory, or The Video Art Observatory, back on July 16th 1985.   Denver was a hub for this kind of thing so I wasn't too surprised to see this recording in the box of tapes he gave me.  I wish there was video of this event as descriptions I've read say it included quite the light and video presentation.  Especially for 1985.  

I briefly attempted to put names to some of these tracks but it proved difficult.  If someone is a big fan and can flesh out the setlist or correct track splits I would love to hear from you.  Sound is pretty good and crowd noise is minimal minus the guy who loudly belches twice right at the beginning.  Enjoy.

Pennywise was really blowing up around 1999 I recall.  I had seen them at the Warped Tour earlier in the summer.  Fun live band.  They were touring for their new album "Straight Ahead" at this time. Setlist spans their catalog and we got a couple cool Circle Jerks covers.  Enjoy.

Joyce Manor @ Marquis Theatre, Denver CO, 2015-08-30

 

I don't recall a lot about this set except that I was very tired this night.  This was the last set on the third night of Denver Riot Fest 2015.  I had been all 3 days.  I saw and recorded some amazing sets.  Most of which I have shared in previous posts.  I had not shared this Joyce Manor before so I gave it a listen.  Emo Pop Punk isn't generally my go to, but when its this well done it's hard to not get into it.  These guys repeatedly mention how stoked they are to open for and too get to see Drive Like Jehu on this night so that pulled me in too.   I've been listening to their new 2026 album "I Used To Go To This Bar" a little bit recently.  That inspired this archive pull more than anything.

They play a bunch of songs from their 2014 album "Never Hungover Again" and some older tracks. They talk about how awesome Dead Milkmen were earlier in the day and announce a cover.  Sadly not a DM cover but a Weezer song.  I guess I missed the first few songs of this set.  Fun for what it is. Toody Cole and Her Band @ Gonerfest, Memphis TN, 2026-09-25

 





I have been a fan of Dead Moon for a long time but I totally dropped the ball on seeing them live when they were active.  I had plenty of opportunities too.  Too many shows and not enough time I guess.  So I was happy to make up for the deficit a little bit by catching Toody Cole and her Band at Gonerfest 23 this year in Memphis Tennessee.  Joining Toody were Kelly Halliburton and Christopher March who also play in Jenny Don't and the Spurs from Portland.

Big set of Dead Moon songs under a full moon and a lovey Memphis night.  I think this sounds pretty good especially since recording outside can be a challenge.  The stage was right in front of a double set of train tracks so a train does go by twice during this set but it isn't too intrusive.  Enjoy.

Dishwalla @ Fox Theatre and Best Buy instore, Boulder - Westminster 1996-07-24 and 23

 

Here is another of MarcR's mid 90s DAT recordings.  This time California Alt Rock band Dishwalla.
You might remember them from their 1996 hit "Counting Blue Cars".  Marc must have been a big fan since he caught 2 performances in a row.  A show at the Fox Theatre in Boulder and an in-store performance at the Westminster Best Buy.

Both recordings sound pretty good.  The band has technical issues with the keyboards at both shows but they were pros and roll with it.  Enjoy.

Clinging To The Trees Of A Forest Fire @ Three Kings Tavern, Denver CO, 2008-12-19


Clinging To The Trees Of A Forest Fire was a Denver band from 2006-2013.  They played grindcore with some death metal and metalcore touches.  This was Ethan McCarthy's band before he formed Primitive Man.  On drums was J.P. Damron who also now plays in Ethan's band Vermin Womb.  Bass was Zach Harlan who is also in Vermin Womb.  Guitar by Ben Romsdahl.

I noticed recently that someone started a CTTTOAFF IG page and the hard to find album "Songs Of Ill Hope and Desperation" is available on bandcamp now.  So go check that out.  That inspired me to dig up this recording and get it posted.  

At this 2008 show CTTTOAFF opened a bill that also included Dead Speak, Enemy Reign, and Cephalic Carnage.  Wow!!  Hell of a show.   I had my mics mounted on the ceiling at Three Kings by this point so I think this sounds pretty good.  If your into this kind of thing.  Enjoy.

Hot Snakes @ Oriental Theatre, Denver CO, 2019-09-05

 

Here is my capture of Hot Snakes at the Oriental Theatre in Denver CO back on September 5th 2019.  They were on tour for the magnificent album Jericho Sirens.  Amazing cross catalog setlist.

Sadly Hot Snakes last tour and last time in Denver.  Rick Froberg passed away unexpectedly in 2023.
From what I've read their might be an unreleased Hot Snakes album in the can that was close to finished before Rick's death.  So maybe that will see the light some day.  Enjoy.

I've seen Ministry a bunch of times over the years since the 90s.  I think it's fair to say that it's been hit or miss.  Though they have definitely been on an up swing in recent years.  Good to see.

Catherine Wheel @ Bluebird Theatre, Denver CO, 1995-08-01

 

Today I'm featuring another MarcR recording from his DAT archive.  This time UK shoegaze / hard rock band Catherine Wheel.  Named for a medieval torture device and on tour for their 1995 album "Happy Days", they played the Bluebird Theatre in Denver Colorado on August 1st 1995.  Not a band I was very familiar with other than their hit "Black Metallic".  They stretch that number out to over 10 minutes on this night.

Good sound and not much chatter.  Enjoy.

Old 97s @ Fox Theatre, Boulder CO, 2004-08-07


 
Here is an Old 97's show that I haven't shared before.  This show was part of the annual Triple A radio conference that was/is held at the Fox in Boulder every year.  They were on tour for the "Drag It Up" album this year.   They play a few songs from that and then some classics.  

I've been a big fan of these guys for a long time.  The are still at it today and putting out new music.
Nice sound on this one and I love they played "Dressing Room Walls"  Enjoy.

Acid Bath @ Red Rocks, Morrison CO, 2026-09-15

 






I totally missed the boat on these guys in the 90s.  I know I was aware of them but in that time you had to own a physical media to hear most anything underground.  After reading some of the press about their resurgence it sounds like CD distribution wasn't great and their management kind of screwed them over.  It wasn't until last year before their December Denver appearance that I really dug in and gave their material a good listen.  I'm sure I would have been into it had I heard it back in the day.

It can be really tough to get a nice recording at Red Rocks.  The wind will often make it sound not so good.  On this night we were blessed with almost perfect weather and getting there early I got a great place to record from.   This was a hell of a show with Cephalic Carnage, Windhand, Twin Tribes, & Ministy also on the bill.

This recording is a matrix of my recording and bluejane99's.  He did the work to combine these and I really like the result.  Enjoy.

Red Fang @ Three Kings Tavern, Denver CO, 2010-10-26


Today I present a Red Fang show from Three Kings Tavern back on October 26th 2010.  These guys just came through with the Sword and played a much larger venue.  Back in 2010 the just had their first self titled album, and a few tour EPs out.  At this show they did play a bunch of songs from the then upcoming album "Murder In The Mountains" that didn't come out until March of 2011.

Not sure why I never had shared this one.  Great setlist and good sound.  Enjoy.

Melvins @ Ogden Theatre, Denver CO, 2026-08-07

 



I love the Melvins and have seen them a ton.  At least 30 times.  I have recordings of 20 of those I think. So it has gotten to the point were I don't feel obligated to see them every single time these days.  Of course them with Tomahawk was too good to pass up.  Great set from them and cool to see the double drummer set up in action again.

Amazing setlist and I think this sounds pretty nice.  Very little crowd chatter.  This recording is a combination of mine and another taper bluejane99's left and right side captures.  He created this matrix of the two with nice results.  Enjoy.

Drag The River @ Gothic Theatre, Englewood CO, 2002-11-07





I'm looking forward to the full band Drag The River shows that they have announced for the end of the year.  So while looking for something to post I saw I had never shared this 2002 DTR set from when they opened up for Hank III and Legendary Shake Shackers at the Gothic Theatre in Englewood Colorado on November 7th 2002.  The line up back then was Jon Snodgrass - vocals, guitar, Chad Price - vocals, guitar, Paul Rucker - drums, J.J. Grueter - bass, & Zach Boddicker - guitar.

They had only released Hobo Demos and Closed so all the songs are from those except Dirty Lips, which they didn't put out until 2006, and some choice covers.  Great board mix capture for this and fun short set.  Enjoy.

Cobalt @ Hi Dive, Denver CO, 2016-09-24


This is a Colorado deep cut to most I imagine.  Cobalt started in Greeley Colorado in the early aughts  by childhood friends Phil McSorley and Erik Wunder. They put out a string of very well received,  interesting, experimental black metal albums between 2003 to 2009.  During the recording of the album "Slow Forever" Phil left the band as was replaced by Charlie Fell.  Erik Wunder died too young at 42 in 2025.

They didn't tour a whole lot and when they did they recruited outside bass and guitar players to fill out the band.  For this 2016 tour they were joined by Jonathan Campos from Primitive Man on bass and Shane McCarthy from Wayfarer on guitar.  This tour was the most extensive that they ever did across the US with 21 shows.  The tour was joined by German duo Mantar.  Denver was the final homecoming stop.  Original vocalist Phil McSorley came out and sang Gin with the band.

It had been awhile since I had listened to this.  What a great show with songs from across their catalog.

I hadn't seen Tomahawk since 2003 so when I saw they were coming with the Melvins I knew I needed go to  the show.  23 years later they still deliver live.  Great set with songs from their entire catalog.  Minimal Mike Patton banter.  They just got to work.  Enjoy.

Melvins @ Ogden Theatre, Denver CO, 2008-07-31


Here is the Melvins headlining set from July 31st 2008.  This was the "Nude With Boots" tour and included Big Business guys Cody Willis on drums and Jared Warren on bass.  I figured since I had posted the SC3 and Big Business sets from this night I better get up this stellar Melvins set.

Great setlist and nice sound on this one.  Enjoy.

Nashville Pussy @ Bluebird Theatre, Denver CO, 1998-09-17


Here is audio of Nashville Pussy at the Bluebird Theatre in Denver Colorado back on 1998-09-17.  Jim Hucks shot video of this and sent me the audio to share.  Nashville Pussy was touring behind their debut album "Let Them Eat Pussy".  Most of the set is from that but there are a few new at the time songs and cool cover.  I didn't see this particular show but saw them at the Fox in Boulder with The Hookers around this same time.  Powerhouse live rock n roll band.

Suicidal Tendencies @ Mile High Stadium, Denver CO, 1999-07-11

 

Here is another of my 1999 Warped Tour recordings.  Today Suicidal Tendencies!!  At the beginning Mike says that they hadn't been here in 5 years.  I think this might have been my first time seeing them but I had been a fan since the 80s.  In 1999 they were touring behind their new album Freedumb.  They play a couple songs songs from it and some classics.  

I feel I might have been standing on the edge of the pit to record this.  There isn't a whole lot of chatter. Been awhile since I listened to this one. It's not too bad. I quite enjoyed the revisit. Enjoy.

Big Business @ Ogden Theatre, Denver CO, 2008-07-31

 


I'm a big fan of Big Business and have seen them many times since their 1st tour back in 2005.  This show was part of a bill with Melvins and Secret Chiefs 3.  They were still touring behind their 2007 album "Here Come The Waterworks" but the did play a couple of songs from the then upcoming 2009 album "Mind The Drift"

Nice sound and a good performance.  Enjoy.

Buñuel @ Hi Dive, Denver CO, 2026-02-05

 



This was Eugene Robinsons first performance in Denver ever.  He talks about it on this night. He was going to play with Whipping Boy in 1983 but the police shut down the show.  Then in 2017 Oxbow was supposed to play a show but when they got to Denver the show was going on without them and promoter said they were off the bill.  I would love to know where that happened because I know a lot of people would have come out to see Oxbow.  I would have.

I was almost done reading Eugene's Feral House published memoir "A Walk Across Dirty Water and Straight Into Murderer's Row" when I heard the news that he suffered a stroke.  Scary situation but it sounds like he's on the mend.  I'm sure there is a gofundme for him if you are looking to throw him some support.

This was such a fun show.  Squid Pisser opened with their masked madness and then Buñuel knocked it out of the park.  Great performance and sound.  Solid setlist with an Oxbow song even.  Enjoy.
