Slakjaw @ Lion's Lair, Denver CO, 2010-03-13

Sad to hear the news that Matthew Hunter had passed away.  Matthew played the washtub bass and kazoo in Denver band Slakjaw.  You also might have know him as a bartender at the Lion's Lair.  I spent a lot of time there in the early aughts and always liked that guy.  Condolences to his friends and family.

I saw Slakjaw many, many, many times.  The called themselves bumcore.  Roots punk is a fair description.  Here is a set of their from 2010 opening up for John Doe.  Fun drunk rowdy Lair crowd.
Nice audience / sound board mix for this recording. Enjoy.  RIP Matthew.

The New Pornographers @ Gothic Theatre, Englewood CO, 2003-06-03

Here is a 2003 show from The New Pornographers.  They are mostly Carl Newman's band with variety of band members.  A few people that have always been included on the albums.  Including Neko Case who joined them on this tour.  So that was a treat.

This was the tour for their 2nd album 'Electric Version' so there are lots of songs from that in the set.  Carl and Neko are really chatty on this.  Not sure if that is always the case since I've only seen them once.  Might have to do with as Carl says at the start "we are pulling a Guided By Voices and having the beer onstage tonight"

They talk about Kid Rock, hockey, the possibility of George W Bush's daughter having a eunuch that buys beer for them.  Kinda funny.

Sound is pretty good on this.  Clear vocals and a nice house mix.  Enjoy.

Get Three Coffins Ready @ Benders Tavern, Denver CO, 2007-03-09

Here is a companion post to the Deadbolt show I featured not too long ago.  Here is the opening set from the exemplary Denver band Get Three Coffins Ready.

Loud, fast, spaced out, surf rock at it's finest.  I saw a bunch of killer G3CR shows back in the aughts.  I can't recall exactly when they called it quits.  Some of them went on to play in The Bloody Fives which was more of a soul rock outfit.  Denver has a rich history of amazing music being made in this town.
This is just a tiny glimpse.

I think this sounds really nice and I hope you enjoy it.  Long Live the new Flesh!!

Modest Mouse @ Fillmore, Denver CO, 2001-10-10

Like a lot of people I probably caught wind of Modest Mouse when the Lonesome Crowded West album came out.  I didn't see them live until this show.  They were on tour for their new album at the time The Moon and Antarctica when the came to the Fillmore in Denver.

I seem to recall there being another taper at the show and I believe he let me share his mic stand.  I think we were setup right behind the main soundboard area in the middle of the Fillmore.
Not a lot of crowd noise on this at all.  Very enjoyable listen.  The Fillmore can be pretty hit or miss sound wise but they had it dialed in on this night.

Really amazing set list I think.  When I originally recorded this I had no idea what the song was for tracks 11 and 20.  Now after a fresh transfer from my masters and a closer look.  Those tracks are both takes on a song called Spilled Milk Factory that ended up being on Brock's other band Caustic Casanova's only release that came out the next year in 2002.  There is another odd detour at the end of Cowboy Day that I had previously split off as it's own track.  Is it an improv or part of another song I am just not sure.

Enjoy.
