Radio 4 @ Bluebird Theater, Denver CO, 2002-09-10

Radio 4 was a dancey post punk band from NYC.  Back in that era there was a bunch of bands playing groovier Mission To Burma, Gang Of Four influenced rock music.  This show had Radio 4 opening for like minded band Girls Against Boys.  Radio 4 gives me a bit of a Clash vibe too.  They put out a ton of dance remixes during their career.

I remember thinking that this was really great at the time.  Funny how it took me almost 20 years to revisit it.  Still think it is great.  Listening to this show inspired me to track down a copy of their album Gotham!.   Really underrated band.  If you did this go search out some of their releases.

Great sound on this one.  Chapper borrowed the Neumanm's for this show.

If you want to hear the GVSB set it is posted here.

Rocket From The Crypt & The (International) Noise Conspiracy, Denver CO, 2001-04-24

2001 was a really banner year for me going to shows.  I saw a ton of stuff and recorded most of it.  This week in April of 2001 was a good one.  I saw 16 Horsepower in Boulder on the 27th and right before that show I caught this amazing Rocket From The Crypt / The (International) Noise Conspiracy show. That was a hell of a week for some live music.

To this day I think this is the best RFTC setlist I have ever seen performed.  The band was at the top of their game around then and firing on all cylinders.   They open with Middle/69 and close with an encore of the A side of State Of The Art is on Fire!!!   Ton of great songs in-between.

Also on the bill was Dennis Lyxzen new band The (International) Noise Conspiracy.  Which he formed right after The Refused broke up in 1998.  Really great stuff.

The Explosion was also on the bill but I don't have a recording and no recollection of them so it is possible I missed them.

Enjoy

16 Horsepower @ Fox Theatre, Boulder CO, 2001-04-27

Here is another 16 Horsepower show.  This time it is a 2001 performance at the Fox Theatre in Boulder Colorado.  Devotchka opened up for then at this show who have gone on to get much much bigger.

The setlist is heavy on material from Secret South but includes a few old numbers as well.  They close out the set with a really cool Joy Division cover.

I always thought the Fox sounded great and I think that really comes though on this recording compared to the big boomy Ogden from the last post.

I'm sure I traded this out on CDR back in the day.   This is a fresh transfer from the masters.  Newly adjusted, tracked, and tagged.  I consider it an upgrade to the original release.  Enjoy.

16 Horsepower @ Ogden Theatre, Denver CO, 2002-08-20

This turned out to be my last time seeing 16 Horsepower.  By 2002 David Eugene Edward's other band Wovenhand had already been an established touring act which later became his main band.

There was one more 16HP Denver show at the Gothic in 2003 that I missed sadly.  They played a handful of Euro dates in 2004 and then 16 Horsepower was done.  Wovenhand has gone on to put out about 10 albums since this show.   So David has never let up.  At least not until current events intervened.  I heard some rumblings about a new Wovenhand being in the works too.  So go look up what he's been doing lately.  Wovenhand is on bandcamp.

This set features a bunch of songs from the recently released Folklore album which contains some covers and takes on traditional songs.  Some old classic 16HP songs too.  David really stretches out on the show closer Horsehead Fiddle.  I enjoyed revisiting this show.   Good times.

I'm sure I traded this show out on CDR back then.  This version is a fresh transfer from the masters.  Newly adjusted, tracked and tagged.  I consider it an upgrade to that old version.

Fantômas @ Fox Theatre, Boulder CO, 2004-04-14

Mike Patton has this to say about this 2004 tour.  When asked recently by Billboard.com if FANTOMAS will perform their recently released third album, "Delirium Cordia", in its entirety on the upcoming trek, Patton said, "No, we won't play the whole thing. I did design one set where we never play loud. It is basically just going to be little small islands you swim to in the middle of the swamp. It is going to be drone city, baby. We are, for the most part, going to lean really heavy on this ambient stuff, and we are going to basically set up to bore people to tears."

It maybe was a frantic as some Fantômas shows I had seen previously but I wouldn't call it "drone city".  They did mix in many parts of Delirium Cordia through out.  Making this a very difficult show to track.  I'm still not 100% sure I got it right.  I believe that their might be a few more parts from the as then unreleased "Suspended Animation" album mixed into the Delirium Cordia excerpts.

The Fox always sounded great and yet again these old CSBs did a fine job capturing this show.
I must have traded this out on CDR or maybe an early torrent.  Not sure.

This version is a new transfer from my MD master.  Cleaned up, and tracked and tagged anew.
Enjoy

Planes Mistaken For Stars @ Westword Music Showcase, Denver CO, 2007-06-16

Sad news this week.  Gared from Planes Mistaken For Stars passed away after a long battle with cancer.  I only talked with him a few times over the years and he was always a nice genuine guy.  Not surprisingly he left a big impact and will be missed greatly by many.

This show was from what stands as my favorite Westword Music Showcase.  The outdoor stage featured Machine Gun Blues, Planes Mistaken For Stars, The Swayback, Lucero, and Dinosaur Jr.

I think this might have been the first year at this location.  The neighbors in the fancy art museum apartments didn't appreciate the loud music and raucous rock n roll attitudes.

The trouble started when Machine Gun Blues vocalist came out and said " I just like to take a second to say fuck you to all the sponsors...rock n roll doesn't need sponsors"  They received an onstage warning about not cursing on stage and supposedly were threatened with arrest if they continued.  Which not warmly welcomed and they played their song "We Fucked It All Up" next.

The PMFS guys must have been warned as well because right before "Say Not A Word" Gared has a little something to say about that.  I have another PMFS set from later on in the summer of 2007 that I will try and get posted as well.  RIP Gared.

Mike Watt and the Missingmen @ Lion's Lair, Denver CO, 2021-11-13

Fun to be back at the Lion's Lair for a show again.  I can't remember when the last time was.  Sometime in 2019 I would guess.  I dropped in back in 2020 one night when the were open.  Always have loved this place.

Mike Watt and the Missingmen were quite the 1st show back.  The local openers The Pollution were also great.  Fun night all around with a good crowd.   They played again on Sunday night but I just couldn't swing it.

I think this sounds really nice but it has plenty of the ol' Lion's Lair atmosphere on here.  I don't think it takes away from the enjoyment very much.

Right around the 5th song in the shelf I had clamped my mic pole to got backed into causing the it to collapse and down went my mics.  People around them righted them as best they could.  I noticed pretty quickly and jammed the pole into my gear bag on top of the jukebox.

Guy that did it apologized but it was just an accident.  Like I said good crowd.  Enjoy.

The Jayhawks @ Bluebird Theater, Denver CO , 2003-11-18

Here is a Jayhawks set from the Bluebird Theater in Denver Colorado from back on November 18th 2003.  They were on tour for their new album Rainy Day Music.  The touring lineup included founding members Louris and Perlman,  drummer Tim O'Reagan, & Stephen McCarthy.

This show also featured the fantastic Canadian band The Sadies as the openers.  Travis and Dallas from the Sadies both come out and join the Jayhawks for songs at the end of the set.

I think this one sounds really nice.  I continue to be surprised listening back to some of these CSB recordings I made back then.  Enjoy.

YOB @ Psycho Vegas, Las Vegas, NV, 2017-08-17

How about another 2017 Psycho Vegas set.  This time it's YOB's pre-party set from the Thursday night before the main fest kicked off.  They played in the smaller Vinyl room next to the big room at the Hard Rock Hotel.  Sub Rosa opened up.

Setlist is mostly songs from The Great Cessation and Clearing The Path To Assend.   Crowd is a bit chatty in some of the quite parts but not terrible.

Looking forward to seeing Yob again live soon.  They have just announced a bunch of tour dates.

Enjoy.

Wolves In The Throne Room @ Psycho Vegas, Las Vegas, NV, 2017-08-18

While I had been a fan for awhile this was my first time seeing WITTR live.  On a giant stage in Las Vegas at that.   Always a bit weird to see a band that you know would play a lot smaller room in your home town up on a big stage.   Good for them though it was pretty great with the monster sound system and big production lights.

This show wold have been part of the touring for the Thrice Woven album but mostly features songs from the Two Hunters album.

They have continued the great work and released the fantastic Primordial Arcana in 2021.  I look forward to catching them on tour for that album in 2022.

As always go out an support live music and artists anyway you can.  They provided a lot of light and love to people even when it is in the form of atmospheric Cascadian black metal.

This recording was done with the internal mics on the M10.  Not an ideal situation.  I can't recall why I had to use them and not outboard mics.   Regardless I was pleasantly surprised on how good this sounds.  It helps that it was recorded from a fix position.  Enjoy.

Rocket From The Crypt @ The Starlight, Ft Collins CO, 2001-07-18

I was thinking about Rocket From the Crypt recently.  I read that they were having a special Halloween show in San Diego this year.  Some kind of 3D spooktacular.   No doubt it was a super fun event.  I miss seeing them live so that they are still getting out and playing does my heart good.

It got me to thinking about they times that I have seen them and which recording I have shared.  I remembered that I have never posted this 2001 set from The Startlight in Fort Collins Colorado.

It was a hot, hot, July night and John Reis mentions that fact multiple times and about how the crowds bad body odor is affecting the the tuning of their guitars and the sound of the amps.  He recommends that one gentleman in the crowd "meets my friend soap".   It was mostly jokes but I'm sure it was rip in that place that night.

John also mentioned that it was their first time in town but I have a RFTC recording from a show in Ft Collins from way back in 1993.

Wretch Like Me and Bill the Welder opened up for this show.

Sound pretty good I think.  Nice clear vocals and nothing is blown out.  Enjoy.

Shooter Jennings @ Boulder Theatre, Boulder CO, 2006-08-30

Shooter is the only son of Walyon Jennings and Jessi Colter.  He's been am active musician since a young age and tried his hand in multiple genres over the years.

In 2005 he out out a country album that made a fairly big splash called "Put the 'O' Back in Country'. Followed up by 'Electric Rodeo'.    Those too are my favorite that I have spent the most time listening too.  But it had a large catalog of releases that worth exploring.

Around that time he started hitting the road pretty hard and eventually ended up in Boulder Colorado for this show.  I recall that this show was fairly sparsely attended and Shooter comments from the stage that they didn't know how Boulder was going to like some country music.   I remember there was a group of women who won tickets to the show from KYGO, or whatever the big pop country radio station was at the time, and they didn't seem very into it.

I thought it was a great show and at the time Shooter was open to people recording his shows and I ran a big tall mic stand to capture this.   That and the small crowd helped me make a nice capture.

I posted this on COtapers.org back then.  This version has been sweetened up a bit and freshly tagged.
Enjoy

Just over 22 years ago.  Motörhead live at the Ogden Theater.   Motörhead was on tour for Snake Bite Love.  I believe that this was my first time seeing Motörhead as well.

This was still during my first year of recording shows.   The levels are blown out right at the beginning but I real it in pretty quick.   Over all it's a little muddy but very listenable I think.

I'm sure I traded this out on CDR back then but it must not have gotten around very much as there wasn't even a setlist on setlist.fm.

Split Lip Rayfield @ Quixotes, Denver CO, 2008-01-18

I first saw Split Lip Rayfield in 2004 at the Larimer Lounge.  I had been planning on going to see Wayne 'The Train' Hancock that night at the Lion's Lair but he canceled.  A friend had already made it downtown to see that show too so I suggested that we go check out Split Lip Rayfield instead.

We biked on over there from Cap Hill and had our minds blown.  I was an instant fan.  I think all their albums are great and worth seeking out if your a fan of some frantic bluegrass.  Really good song writing too.

Sadly they lost one of the main members Kirk Rundstrom to cancer in 2007.  After taking a much needed breather.  They returned to the road in 2008 as a tribute to Kirk.   This show was from that tour at Quixotes True Blue in Denver CO.

In more recent bad news SLR member Wayne Gottstine also is having a bout with cancer.  Go seek out some official band product, or I bet he might have a kickstarter, if you so inclined to send some support to the band or him directly.

Hell of a setlist on this cold night back in 2008.  I had remembered this one as being not so good with a shitty crowd.  Time has faded whatever perceived faults I thought this had.  The crowd is pretty rowdy but it doesn't  over power the music.  Enjoy.

Here is a monster 2 hour Camper Van Beethoven set from 2004 that my friend Tom captured at the Lion's Lair.   38 songs in total.  Hell of a fun setlist.

This one has been out in the wild for a long time including on the LMA.  It has long been a favorite of mine so I figured I would get it posted up on here.  Enjoy

Negative Approach @ HQ, Denver CO, 2021-09-01

It's been awhile since I have posted a recent show for obvious reasons.  Finally getting out to see some shows again.

For example when Detroit Hardcore legends Negative Approach plays within walking distance you don't miss it.   The show was really fantastic and despite John Brannon looking like a mad man he was really nice after the show and answered a few questions for me and signed my Easy Action LP.

Local openers Direct Threat, No Takes, and Implied risk also kicked ass.  I've included untracked downloads of their sets at the bottom of this page.   Enjoy.

*****This show happened on the 1st but for some reason I tagged these all as the 2nd. Oops****

Morbid Angel @ Oriental Theater, Denver CO, 2019-03-01

This was a sick tour.  Morbid Angel, Cannibal Corpse, Necrot, and Blood Incantation all on one stage.  At one of my favorite big rooms for metal in Denver too.  It was a Friday night too.  What more could you want.

I posted the Cannibal Corpse set a while back so I figured I would get this one up too.

Nice mix of old and new songs in the setlist.   Enjoy

.357 Stringband @ Benders Tavern, Denver CO, 2007-06-20

.357 String band was Derek Dunn (guitar and vocals), Joseph Huber (banjo, fiddle and vocals), Rick Ness (upright bass) and Jayke Orvis (multi-instrumentalist including mandolin).  Jayke left the band in 2009 and they continued on for a few years until Joseph Huber also decided to call it a day.  They have all gone on to record more music and explore other directions.

I had forgotten about what a fun show this was.   All red hot pickers and most of the songs are barn burners.  They soldiered through a bunch of technical difficulties on this night back in 2007 at the, gone but not forgotten, Benders Tavern in Denver Colorado.   I managed to edit out most of the dead air as it were.  It was a real momentum killer at two different spots in the set that night.

Seek out their music if you dig this and check out what all the members are up to as well.
As always please support independent music and art any way you can.  Enjoy.
