Death Grips @ Larimer Lounge, 2012-11-23

I think I heard about these guys on Vice magazine back in 2011 or so, maybe somewhere else, doesn't really matter.  I saw a link to a video of a song on their release Exmilitary.  I was immediately struck by dense dark production.  It reminded me of the Bomb Squad production on old Public Enemy records.

MC Ride isn't as wordy as Chuck D though.  It's more of a violent, dark, stream of consciousness.  I love weird noisy stuff so I was hooked right away.  Zach Hill formerly of Hella plays drums on the albums and live and that live percussion is what really made the show for me.  Check it out.

Faith No More @ The Gothic, 1993-02-06

What a hell of a show this was.  Kyuss touring behind Blues For The Red Sun.  Babes in Toyland had released Fontanelle not long before this and the might Faith No More has just released Angel Dust.

This isn't my recording so hats off to the original taper who ever that may be.  This is a pretty great sounding soundboard tape.  Good stuff.

Billy Joe Shaver @ The Lion's Lair, 2003-04-06

Presenting the living country legend Billy Joe Shaver at the (Worlds Famous) Lion's Lair in Denver Colorado. Capacity at the Lair at the time was about 100. It's a small room with the bar right in the center. Maybe 25 bar stools ringed the bar and the stage was right behind the bar. Front row seats with drink service.

This was one of those show where I felt kind of bad and totally privileged at the same time. The show being on a Sunday night might have contributed to a light turnout but just enough people showed up to fill every bar seat. I couldn't believe that Denver seemed to not know who Billy Joe was or didn't care. Billy Joe didn't seem to care about the small turn out though. He played a great set of songs and told some great stories.

Towards the end he told the audience that he will play one more song if we would all stand up. Of course everyone stands up and they start the next song. Not far into it he told us all that we could sit back down. What a sweetheart.

Really nice sounding soundboard of this performance. This show is in the top five list of my favorite recordings. Hope you enjoy it.

Mike Patton and Rahzel @ The Fox, 2003-11-06

"Let me ask you a question?  You've heard of the movie Deliverance right?   Weeeeeeeeeee!!!!
Alright, Well you know that tune Dueling Banjos?  Tonight what your going to get is dueling Man Hoes"

That is Mike Patton's introduction to this performance.  Not sure how rehearsed this was and how much is just spontaneous.  Rahzel does his amazing human beat boxing and Mr. Patton does his odd vocals things and bits of popular songs.  Salt and Pepper and 50 Cent are referenced.  Part of the show Mike tunes around on the radio and the riff on some of what he dials in.  It's an hour of awesome weirdness.

Rahzel and Mike have preformed together on multiple occasions before and since this performance.  Based on a cursory Google search they performed at Coachella in 2009.  Later in this show from Boulder Rahzel mentions that they will be having a new album come out soon but sadly no album has ever been release.  The way Rahzel talks it sounds like it was s done deal but who knows.

I had no idea how to label these tracks with song titles so I didn't bother.  There are just track splits between obvious transition points.  Check it out.

I posted this as a torrent some where way back in 2003 so if you have that source know that this is a fresh transfer from the master and I did a fresh mastering job on it as well.  Consider it an upgrade.

The Revival Tour @ The Marquis, Denver CO 2008-10-23

Chuck Ragan took this first incarnation of the Revival tour out on the road in fall of 2008.  Chuck was joined on the tour at this date by Ben Nichols of Lucero, Tim Barry of Avail, Austin Lucas, Jon Snodgrass of Drag The River, Todd Beene, Jon Gaunt, & Digger Barne.  All artist who are doing their own modern take on folk music.  Each of the musicians took turns playing their own sets and continuously joined each other on stage through out the night.

This show was a monster.  Clocking in at over 3 hours of non-stop music.  That is a long show.  More then drifting into jam bad territory length.  I recall that while the show was going on it didn't seem that long.  Just one entertaining moment after the next.

Here is my recording of the event.

Split Lip Rayfield @ The Bluebird, 2006-09-02

Wow it has been 6 years since this show.  Doesn't seem that long at all.  I was obsessed with this band from the very first time that I saw them.  Just an electrifying live act.  If you not familiar with the band I have described them in the past as the Slayer of bluegrass.  Due to both the speed at which they play and some of the songs subject matter.  Some pretty dark stuff for such happy sounding music.  Right up my alley though so no wonder it clicked.

This show is from their last tour with Kirk Rundstrom in the band.  He found out he had esophageal cancer on the eve of an previous Denver show.  He underwent treatment but when the prognosis didn't change he decided to stop the therapy that was just making him sick and go on tour.  He look frail but he was smiling and really gave it his all.  Rest In Peace Kirk.  You are missed.
