Red Fang @ 3 Kings Tavern, Denver CO, 2009-02-08

Here is another 3 Kings Tavern show.  This time an Red Fang show.  This might have been their first time through Denver.  They were touring for their 1st album but they play some songs that ended up on the 2nd record.

There are a couple songs that I don't recognize.  Track 5 is an instrumental.  Not sure if it should be part of Whales and Leeches or not.  Also track 9 is a mystery.  I found a live video on Youtube where they play this tune but it is listed and unknown title there.  I just Now's The Time.

Enjoy.

Teenage Bottlerocket @ 3 Kings Tavern, Denver CO, 2009-03-23

Today's show from the 3 Kings Tavern is the always exuberant Teenage Bottlerocket.  They were rolling through Denver after some other dates for Warning Device.  They did treat us to a new at the time songs from the forthcoming The Came From The Shadows.

Fun high energy set without a lot of chit chat.  Enjoy.

Mike Scheidt @ Three Kings Tavern, Denver CO, 2013-10-17

Here is another one out of the archive from 3 Kings.  Mike from YOB playing a short acoustic set.

I recall it happening fairly early and was sparsely attended.  End of happy our crowd is a little chatty but it's not very noticeable when he is playing.  I couldn't work out titles for the first two songs.  Those are just a guess.  Superb Townes Van Zandt and Neil Young covers in there too.

Short but sweet.  Enjoy.

SHAT @ 3 Kings, Denver CO, 2007-02-24

Well last Friday I got the news that 3 Kings Tavern wasn't going to reopen after the pandemic lock down rules get lifted.  Mostly since we have no idea how long it is going to be until bars are going to be open.  Even them what is that going to look like?  The owners understandable decided to call it.

I've been bummed about other bars closing over my life but this one hit hard.  I've know the 3 Kings, Jim, Jeff, and Marty, since they all worked for N.I.P.P. at the Bluebird and Ogden theaters.  Back from the end of the 90s.  A long time.  I was stoked that they opened their own place.

Had a lot of great memories there.  Made friend, lost friends, fell out of love, fell in love, attended memorials, hosted memorials, and saw a ton of excellent music.  It was more than just a great live music room or beloved local bar.  It felt like family.  And not just to me.  That was their mission statement.  I could walk in there and almost be guaranteed to run into someone I knew.  Even if that was just one of the many fantastic bartenders that worked there in the 14 year run.  It's going to be missed.

In light of that I'm going to make the next run of post all shows from 3 Kings  I got to know the Kings as a live show taper and they welcomed that in their venue so I have a lot of recordings from there.  I already have 40+ posted on here.  I added a tag to the featured bands list on the side if you want to see all of them.  More to come.

Here is one that is not for everyone's taste for sure.  SHAT played 3 Kings 4 times I believe.  Always right around Valentines Day.  So that became the running joke.  If you don't know SHAT and aren't already offended by the band name scroll down and take a look at the some of the song titles.  If that doesn't do it hit google and you can see some pictures of what their performance looked like.  So many dildos.  Well I guess if your offended maybe just skip this one.  More good stuff to come.

And now ladies and gentleman SHAT.

Mastodon @ Fox Theater, Boulder CO, 2009-04-14

My last post got me thinking about shows I have seen and recorded at the Fox Theater in Boulder.

Here is a really good one.  Mastodon on the Crack The Skye tour.  Right before they got way to big to play at a place as small at the Fox.  Stellar support from Kylesa and Intronaut this night.

Mastodon played though all of Crack The Skye and then a bunch of songs from their 2 previous albums.  Really killer show.

Rolled on this with my MBHO rig and it sounds really nice I think.  Enjoy.

Brian Setzer ‘68 Comeback Special @ The Fox, Boulder CO, 2001-07-31

I've been a fan of the Stray Cats since I saw them on the ABC TV SNL clone 'Fridays' in 1981.  I recall getting the Stray Cat Strut 45rpm single after that.  Just good rock n roll music.  What's not to like.

Was too young to ever see them live in their heyday.  Towards the end of the 90s when there was a swing revival spreading across the land.  Brian Setzer did a big band project and toured that a bunch.  I saw a couple of those tours and the Xmas shows.  Always a great time.  Not the same as a Stray Cats but it was his guitar in the spotlight.  Guy has massive chops.

In 2001 he put out a record of a new trio he had formed.  Brian Setzer ‘68 Comeback Special.  They put out one album and did some touring behind it and that was that.  One of the shows was at the Fox in Boulder Colorado.  Not a beautiful theater necessarily but it always sounded fantastic.  I went figuring that it was about as close to seeing the Stray Cats as I was ever going to get.

They came out firing on all cylinders and just blew everyone away.  So good.  A bunch of tunes that they wrote for their album, Stray Cat's songs, and some choice covers.

I wish I could remember where I stood when I recorded this.  Barely any noise crowd, chit chat, just the occasional loud clapper.  Pulling this one out reminded me of how great the sound at the Fox was.  I saw lots and lots of shows there in the 90-00.  We diverged in our tastes I guess because it is rare that there is anything that I just have to see booked at the Fox these days.

Enjoy

This has been making the rounds occasionally since I recorded this back in 2004.  Not sure why it never made it up onto my blog.  Now is the time.

Love love love the Hot Snakes and all related bands.  They just really make some magic.

Captured a nice board mix this night.  Look at the damn set list!!  Holy hell this was a great night.

Fotocrime @ Hi Dive, Denver CO, 2019-06-15

Man I miss seeing live music.  Hanging out with like minded individuals.  Having some drinks and shooting the shit about whatever.  Seeing old friends.  Making new friends.  Watching a band or individual lay it all out bare for the world to see.  Sometimes with an acoustic guitar and hushed vocals or sometimes with a stage full of amps that are as loud as fuck.  Love all that.  We need to do what we need to do right now so that we can all do that again safely.  I'm willing to wait it out.

In the mean time if you love this stuff too please support your favorite artist and venues by helping them out.  Bandcamp has been killing it lately but having special days were they give 100% of the transactions to the artist.  Buy some music from someone you already love or someone you just heard of.  Find out what your favorite local venue is doing and throw them some support anyway you can.  Support you local record stores and buy something from them too.  This worldwide situation is nothing like most of us alive right now have ever experienced.  We are going to get through it but the cultural and economic impact is going to be gigantic.  Let's love each other and try to go do some good any time you can.

With all this extra free time it has had me digging into the vaults and posting a lot of stuff from years and years ago.  Figured it was time for something relatively fresh.  Here is a show from about a year ago.

Fotocrime is project from Ryan Patterson.  You might know him from his previous long running band Coliseum.  They started out more as a hardcore / posthardcore band that slowly morphed into a more dark gothic rock sound.  Think Sisters Of Mercy as a relevant touchstone but it's not quite that.

He has released a series of fantastic EPs and two full length albums.  His newest South Of Heaven has been pretty much in constant rotation for me.  He recorded that with a full band but he mostly tours as a solo artist.  Really compelling music I just can't get enough of.

At this show he was part of the always amazing Electric Funeral Fest that was put on for 4 years running by Denver's Dust Presents.  Obviously not happening this year but hopefully next summer we will see it rise again.  Always a stunning array of heavy music spanning multi genres.

He was kind of the odd man out at the fest being a solo performer and leaning into the dark synth. For those that stuck around that night we got a fantastic performance.  One of the highlights of the fest for me.

Got a nice capture that night and I hope you enjoy it.

Super fun straight ahead rock n roll.  The Donnas were always a fun band to catch.  Fantastic players, sharp funny lyrics, and they always looked like they were having a good time up on stage.

This show was from them opening for the Strokes back in 2002.  I have that set too.
Maybe I'll post it as well.

ALL @ 3 Kings Tavern, Denver CO, 2008-09-29

Here is a special treat for you.  ALL started playing a few reunion shows in 2008 and one of them included a show around the Democratic National Convention that was held in Denver that year.  Their wiki page mentions that but is light on details.  Anyone see that show?  Love to hear more about that one and why it was "cut short".

They also played an different DNC that same day.  The Drunkard National Convention put on by Modern Drunkard Magazine.  ALL was an unannounced surprise band on the 1st day's lineup playing after Drag The River.

I missed all this mayhem for reasons that I can't recall.  But my buddy Brad Nelson that was doing sound that night captured a really nice soundboard mix of their 3 Kings set.

Enjoy

Here are the only two recordings I got that day.  Not sure why I only recorded the 2 1/2 bands. Could have been battery issues, a limited number of minidiscs.  Seems like I would have recorded Slayer as well.  20 years ago is a long time and I don't remember.  Oh well.

Downset @ Red Rocks, Morrison CO, 2000-08-10

Tattoo The Earth at Red Rocks.  This was a bruiser of a day.  No shade and temps near 100 for a show that started at 2 in the afternoon.  Kick it off with a few beers, some reefer certainly, and a big scoop of mushrooms.  Seemed like a great idea in the shady parking lot.  It mostly was but I'm not sure I full recommend tripping balls in heat like that.  We powered on through it.

Big show.  20 some odd bands.  The above poster for the Red Rocks date lists Coal Chamber but I don't remember seeing them.  There were so many bands the first 12 bands or so set up on opposite sides of the large Red Rocks stage.  Band on right would play their short set.  Then band on left played while the crew tore down and setup on the right side. Wash repeat.

One of those early on the bill bands was, and is, one of my favorites.  Downset from Los Angeles.  Part of that genre break off of Hardcore and Hip-hop.  Lots of groups took a swing at and but few succeeded.  Downset being one of the innovators of that scene was always head and shoulders above everyone in my mind.

This is their short but sweet set from that day.

Australia's long running Radio Birdman is not a band that tours much.  So when they came in 2007 to support their new album Zeno Beach it was a must see.

They totally delivered live too.  What a fantastic show.
