Hotline TNT @ Marquis Theater, Denver CO, 2024-06-15

Great newish band Hotline TNT came through Denver earlier this year.  I loved the album "Cartwheel" that they put out last year.  Was excited to catch them live.  The show was put on as an afterparty to an event that Thrasher Magazine did earlier in the day.  Crowd was full of real young kids maybe seeing their first real show and actual mosh pit.  It was pretty fun to see.

Hotline TNT was loud!!  Great varied setlist and a new song even.  Good times.

Brian Setzer Orchestra @ The Filmore, Denver CO, 1999-08-09

Here is one from when the big band revival at the time stalked the earth.   A lot of that wasn't my bag necessarily but Brian Setzer always got a pass from me since I am a big Stray Cats fan.  He has a hot shit road tested orchestra at this point in 1999.  Mr. Setzer is doing it right.

This was not long after the change over from the Mammoth Events Center to the Fillmore.  Brian Setzer comments on how nice the fixed up the place.  Mammoth was a run down dump.  Charming but it needed some work.

I think this sounds pretty good for a show in that room too.  I haven't listened to this since the early aughts.  Was pleasantly surprised and decided to share it. Enjoy.

Son Volt @ Bluebird Theatre, Denver CO, 1995-12-16

On the beer stained battlefields of the alt.country wars in the mid 90s lines were drawn and sides were chosen.  After Uncle Tupelo split, into the bands Wilco and Son Volt, fan divisions were stark.  As you will hear on this recording.  Towards the start and occasionally through out the show an enthusiastic fan will holler "Fuck Wilco!".   Seem harsh now but that is just how it was down in the trenches.

This is another of the MarcR DATs.  What a great capture.  Hell of a setlist too.  Lots of Son Volt songs from the then brand new album Trace.  Six Uncle Tupelo songs and a few other choice covers.  What a gem of a show. Enjoy

X & Rhett Miller @ LODO Music Fest, Denver CO, 2003-07-19

Here is a fun double feature from right after the turn of the century.  For a bunch of years near the baseball park in downtown Denver there was the LODO Music Fest.  Always and interesting a diverse lineup.  In 2003 it included Joan Osborne, X, Medeski Martin Wood, BoDeans, Dark Star Orchestra, Ohio Players, Rhett Miller, Steel Pulse, Blind Boys of Alabama, Radiators, Iguanas, Rob Base Kurtis Blow, Camper Van Beethoven.

They must have been cool with tapers because I recall my friend Tom flying his mics on a stand.  Maybe we knew the sound person.  Too long ago to remember.  Tom recorded X & Rhett Miller from Old 97s that day.  I bet he recorded Camper too.  I need to see if I have that one. In the meantime here are sets from Rhett Miller and X.

There is a fun overlap between these two.  On the Old 97's album 'Too Far To Care' Exene Cervenka from the band X sings on their song 'Four Leaf Clover'.  About midway though Rhett's solo set on this day he expresses his love for the band X and covers X's song 'Dancing with Tears in My Eyes'.  Two songs later Rhett is joined by Exene to sing 'Four Leaf Clover'.  I was so thrilled.  Still was listening back all these years later.

Rhett plays a nice mix of new solo album songs, Old 97s songs, and some fun covers.

X's set is all hits.  As is every show they play.  I'm a gigantic fan.  They have announce that they are doing their last tour ever.  Covering 2024 into 2025.  I missed this years Denver show.  I hope perhaps we might get one more chance in Denver.  Fingers crossed.  If not I got to see them lots and lots of times.

I had been wanting to share this stellar recording Tom made for awhile.  Had a great time listening to this one and thinking about that time.  Enjoy.

Sleep @ Gothic Theater, Englewood CO, 2010-09-05

I first posted this show 2 days after it happened back in 2010.  I was that excited to share Sleep's return to Denver.  I had been thinking about posting this up on my YT channel for awhile.  Finally sat down and gave it a full listen for the first time in a long time and decided to go for it.

Parts of this show were used for the Sleep Live in Denver CO "bootleg" put out on Chalker Place Records in 2012.  I missed out on the original sale of 420 copies on pot green.  They had a 30 second sample on their webpage and I was 99% certain that it was my recording.

I inquired to the label about the origin of the recording and they replied that "they didn't know where it came from, but would I want a copy?".  I said yes and was sent a non numbered copy.  Once I dropped the needle on it, about 45 seconds in, I can hear myself let out a "whoo".  It has to be my source.  Plus I've never seen another source pop up.  It's neat to have a recording you made on vinyl even if I don't get a credit.  There are certainly more copies than 420 out there as I saw the band selling copies on tour in 2014.

I knocked off a few of the rough edges and corrected the tracking for this post.  It reminded me how hella loud this show was.  Lemmy would have been proud. Warts and all.  Good times.

Pearl Jam @ Red Rocks, Morrison CO, 1995-06-20

Back in the 90s there were a bunch of different labels, a lot of them in Italy, that pressed silver CDs of live performances.  Bootlegs is the common term for these.  Artists and mostly record companies didn't like them claiming lost revenue.  No fan of a band was going to buy one of these over the bands official releases though.  And the big fans, like myself, have all that official stuff and wanted more.

You had to know were to go to find this stuff.  I picked this Pearl Jam boot up and Recycled Tapes & Records at Kipling and I-70.  It was pricey compared to a retail CD.  I think I paid $30-40 for this 2CD set.   It's an audience recording but sounds pretty good to me.  I love this stuff though and this inspired me to start recording shows myself a few years later.

I was excited to find this as I went to 1 of the 2 shows that PJ played at Red Rocks that summer. I went to the show the day before on the 19th.  This is all of the show from the 20th but the last 4 tracks are from the 19th.   Bad Religion opened and kicked ass.  I wish a recording of that would surface.

Enjoy

Elvis Costello @ The Warfield, San Francisco CA, 1984-04-28

This recording was on a cassette from the Kat George archive of live tapes.  Like the Knitters show that I posted a while back.  Kat didn't record this one her friend Ken Spears did.  I think it sounds pretty good and was going to share it and found that there was another more complete source of this show out there already so I put it on the back burner.

Last week I saw the news that Elvis was putting out a record with T Bone Burnett called The Coward Brothers.  I recalled that this was the tour where they coined that title.  They play a bunch of songs together at the end of this show.  40 years later they finally got around to recording an album together.  I bet they had been talking about it on and off since this tour.

To my ear this sounds like it was recorded from the front of  the balcony because the crowd noise is pretty subdued.  Very quite and respectful crowd while he is playing too.  Makes for a great listen.  Enjoy.

Pissed Jeans @ Hi Dive, Denver CO, 2024-11-09

Happy 21st Birthday Hi Dive!!  My favorite small room in Denver hands down.  I've been going there to some degree all 21 years.  Kind of wild.  Here is to many more years!  Cheers!

For their birthday they booked Pissed Jeans.  A band that I have been into since the aughts.  I'm sure I heard Hope For Men when it came out in 2007.  Instant fan.  I've enjoyed all of their catalog.  They don't ever play a lot of shows and had never come to Denver before so this was an instant ticket buy as soon as I heard the announcement.

Fantastic stacked lineup with 4 of the best local bands doing it right now.  Pissed Jeans played a set with a lot of new songs from Half Divorced and some classics too.  Sounded great too I thought.  Enjoy.

Ghost Buffalo @ Three Kings Tavern, Denver CO, 2008-02-28

I have been listening to the new Planes Mistake For Stars album "Do You Still Love Me?" a lot lately.  The album was made while front man Gared O'Donnell was under going treatment for cancer.  A heavy situation for sure and the album reflects that.  He passed after completing his vocals and guitars.  The band finished it up posthumously. I highly recommend checking it out.  A beautiful document of friends dealing with life and doing the thing they loved the most together.  It got me to thinking about Matt Bellinger.

The first song on the album is "Matthew Is Dead".  It is about founding PMFS member Matt Bellinger.  He left PMFS to pursue the band he started with his wife Marie Litton called Ghost Buffalo.  The got branded as alt country by the record label but I never really thought that fit.  It sound like post rock Neil Young for lack of a better description.  Live is where they shined and I saw them a bunch of times.  I think I have 12 recordings from a 2 or 3 year run.

Matt had a pretty distinct guitar style so Ghost Buffalo has that edgy PMFS sound. Paired with Marie's solid guitar chops and fantastic lyrics they were a power house.  Their last album The Magician is a all killer no filler record.  Seek it out. I got to know Matt a bit in the late aughts and one time worked witgh him to compiled a "Live Ghost Buffalo" comp that the band sold on CDR at shows.  I tried to find my copy of that or even the files I compiled for it and came up empty.  It got me listening to my recordings and wanting to share one.

This show was at Three Kings Tavern on February 28th.  Git Some headlined and Only Thunder and Handsome Bobby were also on the bill.  So many fun nights at 3K.

This sounds really nice I think and I hope you enjoy it.   RIP Matt.

"Demons" @ Bluebird Theater, Denver CO, 2002-09-17

Here is another band with a name fitting the Halloween season.  "Demons" also from Sweden like the Dahmers who I posted recently.  The "Demons" were most certainly an influence on that younger band since they proceeded them by a decade at least.  Both play that high energy rock n roll that Swedish bands do so well.

This show was from when they were touring the USA with New Bomb Turks in 2002.  I posted the NBT set awhile back.  I hadn't listed to these guys in bit and forgot how hard they rock.  I need to put on the vinyl that I have.  Great band.  Looks like they are still active a bit.  Need to check out their new stuff.  Enjoy.

Kingdom of Magic @ 3 Kings Tavern, Denver CO, 2011-07-22

Kingdom of Magic were a heavy Denver band in the aughts to early 10s.  Members for this show were Lucius Fairchild, Joseph Ramirez & Andrew Lindstrom I believe.  Man about town Sid Pink provides an intro for the band at this 2011 UMS set.

I saw 4 or 5 Kingdom Of Magic shows back then and it always a good heavy shit.  Fuck yeah!

The Dahmers @ HQ, Denver CO, 2024-04-20

The Rocky Mountain Ripper Fest is a hella good time every year.  Micah Morris, who also plays in Fast Eddy, has put it on that last 4 years and brings so many good underground rock n roll bands to Denver.  I saw so much fun rocking stuff over the 3 days this year.  I'm looking forward to see who's on the bill for next year.

The 2024 band that closed out the whole thing was The Dahmers from Sweden.  They are a horror themed punk rock / rock n roll band.  Upbeat good time songs about having Brain Spiders or being a Rat Boy.  Great high energy performance that sold me immediately  Love to see them again someday.

I think this turned out really nice and since we are rolling into the Halloween season I figured it would be a perfect show to post.  Enjoy.

SLAYER @ Fillmore Auditorium, Denver CO, 2001-11-30

Here is my recording of Slayer at the Fillmore in Denver back in the fall of 2001.  On tour for God Hates Us All.  The openers were American Headcharge and Chimaira. Who I don't recall actually seeing.  Might have been stuck in the always stupid long lines at this venue.  Who knows.

Killer setlist on this tour.  Great song after great song.  Not much stage banter.  They plowed right through the 18 songs.  This suffers sound wise from being at the Fillmore and it sounds like I was near the edge of the pit so there is some mic movement.  It is what it is.  Vocals are clear the rest is a bit muddy.    The Mandatory Suicide into Chemical Warfare is my favorite pairing.  Enjoy

Here is Ben Harper and The Innocent Criminals opening set from when the opened for PJ Harvey at the Macky Auditorium in Boulder Colorado back in 1995.  I posted the PJ set not long ago.

This is another MarcR recording.

I'm not sure I got into it until later but I was a fan of his guitar playing and the album Fight For Your Mind.  Been awhile since I had listened to any of his stuff.  Still digging it.  Fun to get to hear this show.

Short but sweet set.  Sounds real nice I think.  Enjoy.

Dale Crover (Melvins) @ Marquis Theatre, Denver CO, 2024-07-13

Dale Crover of the Melvins was out on tour playing drums for Redd Kross recently.  Before they played Dale came out and DJ's some songs for the crowd.  Including, CW McCall - Convoy, ? - Peanut Butter Jelly Time, Warlock Pinchers - Morrissey Rides A Cockhorse, Spinal Tap - Big Bottom, Jacqueline TaĆÆeb - 7 AM, The Rolling Stones - I Wanna Be Your Man, Sam The Sham & The Pharaoh - Lil' Red Riding Hood, Plague Vendor - Rougher Than Rough, and a couple others I didn't recognize.

After that he got up with an acoustic guitar and played a small selection of his solo songs and a Melvins song.  I've never seen Dale do anything but play drums so it was cool to see him in another light.  Good stuff.

Smashing Pumpkins @ Ogden Theatre, Denver CO, 1993-10-10

I was at this show and a massive Smashing Pumpkins fan in 1993.  Siamese Dream had dropped earlier that year and they just took off.  I had seen them on the Gish tour in Denver in 1991.  They played at the Denver Coliseum as part of a bill with Red Hot Chili Peppers and Pearl Jam.  That show made me a fan.

Years later, at the end of the 90s or beginning of the aughts, while I was doing a ton a CDR trading I acquired this 1993 Smashing Pumpkins Ogden show recording.  I remembered it be good but it got filled away in the boxes.  Recently I made an effort to pull all of my own recording that I had on CDR and all other Colorado shows.  I rediscovered this one in that exercise and then it came up in conversation around the same time.  I had to get it posted on here.

I immediately ripped the CDRs to WAVs and revisited it.  I suspect that this might be another MarcR recording as I've seen sources for this show listed as audience DAT but there were a lot of tapers so who knows.  It is also posted on the LMA.    https://archive.org/details/tsp1993-10-10.flac16/

It is the same source as this but the tracking wasn't complete.  The posted comment says that this show is notable not only the first performance of Drown and also that they didn't play Cherub Rock.  That is incorrect.  It's just not split out as a track on the LMA post.  The play it after some banter that must have been encore break.  The CDR source fades out in a few spots where lulls were removed I think.  Amazing finally with Starla.  Best SP show I ever saw in retrospect.

I corrected some audio level issues and massaged it a little bit.  The vocals are nice and clear and during the quite parts it is quite nice.  I remember this show being super loud so during those parts it gets a little muddy.  Some of that is just due to the way that room sounded back then.  Very listenable I think and a hell of a setlist.  Enjoy.

The Briefs @ Bluebird Theatre, Denver CO, 2002-06-11

This had to have been the first time I saw the Briefs.  It might have been their first time in Denver too.  Not sure about that.  They opened up for The Queers.  This show made me a fan and I remain one today.  One of my very favorite bands.  A band that I own a copy of almost everything that they have released on vinyl.  Great songs, biting lyrics, tongue in cheek attitude.

I caught another couple shows in the aughts.  A very memorable one at Climax Lounge (aka The Raven) where they came out wearing real fish as neckties.  They got tossed into the crowd who tossed them back.  It got really gross.

At this Bluebird show all the band members were wearing sexy police man costumes.  I think they might have bought them at the adult emporium that was next door to the Bluebird at the time.  They stood around acting like cops and vibeing people out.  It was pretty funny.  They carried on with that shtick on stage.  Promising not to arrest anyone.  Good fun.  They still play around a little bit and put out a great new album in 2019.  I would see them again in a heart beat.  Enjoy.

Steve Winwood, @ Ball Arena, Denver CO, 2024-08-29

Here is the Steve Winwood opening set from the Doobie Brothers show.  I had seen him one time before opening for Steely Dan at Redrocks.  This time we didn't get hailed on so that was nice.

Would have like to have heard Low Spark but pretty solid set.  Enjoy.

Doobie Brothers @ Ball Arena, Denver CO, 2024-08-29

My first time seeing the Doobies.  They have been around forever so I've heard lots of their songs over the years.  Kind of inescapable. They played some new stuff in the beginning of the set before getting to all the hits.  Great live band.  Steve Winwood opened up the show.  Good times.

Poison RuĆÆn @ D3 Arts, Denver CO, 2024-02-13

Poison RuĆÆn came to my attention in 2023.  Real interesting mix of post punk, d-beat, and punk n roll.  They remind me of the Wipers more than a little bit.  I played their album HƤrvest over and over. that year.

Was excited to see that they were coming to Denver in February of 2024.  They played at a newish all ages venue in town called D3 Arts.  Fun show that night with support from Denver bands Direct Threat and Of Feather And Bone.  Would go see Poison RuĆÆn again anytime.  They just dropped a new EP that I've been enjoying.  Check em out.

As always go out and support independent artist and venues of all kinds with you attention and money. They are working hard to bring us all the really cool stuff.

PJ Harvey @ Macky Auditorium, Boulder CO, 1995-10-05

Here is another excellent MarcR recording.  This time an a 'To Bring You My Love' era PJ Harvey show from October 5th 1995 at Macky Auditorium in Boulder Colorado.

Great setlist and performance.  I dug around to see if I could find this anywhere and found it on one blog fan site where it was called "Straight Outta Boulder".  Did find and sign that this had been shared or had been a bootleg CD.  1995 was a long time ago now.

Enjoy.

The Church and Ed Hardcourt @ Ogden Theatre, Denver CO, 2024-07-02

Here are the booked sets for the Afghan Whigs show I recently posted.  Ed Hardcourt plays with the Afghan Whigs on this tour so his opening set slowly blended in to theirs.  More and more of the AWs joined him onstage until Greg Dulli came out to sing on Ed's song Broken Keys with everyone.  Right after that is were the AW recording starts.  I liked Ed's set.  He plays guitar and keyboards and has an interesting way with words.

I feel like I may have seen the Church before but never knew anything but the hits.  They have been a band since 1980 and have a ton of album.  I had no idea that they had written a concept album about a future where Antarctica is good real-estate and the most popular rock star of the day possesses a musical weapon that could destroy the world.  Way to keep it fresh and interesting for them.  Enjoy.
