The Gourds @ Bluebird Theater, Denver CO, 2002-09-07

I would call myself a fan of The Gourds.  They are a bluegrassy americana country band,  They got some traction in the early aughts with their cover of Snoop Dogg's song "Gin and Juice".  Often miss attributed to Subline or others.   If they played that at this show I don't know.  As I only captured the first 49 minutes for some reason.

I can't recall why this is abbreviated but I also can't even remember going to this show what so ever.  In my defense this was over twenty years ago and in the early aughts I was going to well over 100 shows a year.  What I did capture sounds pretty good I think.  They say from the stage that this was their first show in Denver ever.  I recall that they came back again next year.  They have been on hiatus since 2013.  Enjoy.

Meat Wave @ Lost Lake, Denver CO, 2022-11-09

Meat Wave put out a killer new album this year called Malign Hex.  It is an album that had me hooked from note one and is right up there with my favorite albums of 2022.

Lucky for me they rolled into Denver not long after I started playing the LP over and over.  Not surprisingly they are a fantastic live band as well.  They played songs from across their catalog and handled an equipment malfunction better than almost any band I have ever seen.  Looking forward to seeing them live again someday.  Enjoy.

The Black Halos @ The Bluebird, Denver CO, 2000-05-23

I been thinking about and listening to The Black Halos a lot lately since they just dropped a brand new album called 'How The Darkness Doubled'.  It is a rousing return with Rich Jones, Billy Hopeless, and Jay Millette all back in the fold.  Check it out on all your musical avenues.  It's rocks!  Great production too.  I'm loving it.

This 2000 Denver Black Halos show at the Bluebird had them opening up for L7.  Which I posted a while back.  HERE

They would have still been touring behind the self titled album in 2000.  The do play a few songs from the upcoming 2001 album The Violent Years.  Sound is pretty decent I think.  Billy has a lot of fun stage banter.  Enjoy.

Hank III @ Bluebird Theater, Denver CO, 2002-02-02

Here is another Hank III show from the early aughts. It doesn't feel like it was 20 years ago.  This was a Hank III headlining show where he played a 20 song country set before going into the Assjack stuff.

I think this one sounds really nice too.  I believe Tom brought out the Neuman microphones for this show.  The really make a nice capture.

I'm certain I traded this out on CDR back in the day.  This is a fresh transfer from the master.  I didn't do much to adjust the audio since it sounded so good.  Newly tracked and tagged.  I would consider this an upgrade if you have it already.  Enjoy.

Melvins @ Fox Theatre, Boulder CO, 2001-05-07

Melvins were on tour for the Electroretard album.  Kevin Rutmanis was on bass still.  They opened up with an abbreviated version of "Colossus of Destiny" which they released later that year as a stand alone album featuring a live recording of an extended noise experimental set they recorded in 1998.  My recording fades in on it so I must have missed the beginning.  It's not nearly as torturous at that album.

Hell of a setlist for this performance.  I think I might have some how missed the last two songs.  Setlist FM has Hung Bunny and Roman Bird Dog listed as being played last on this night.  That might be the case but since it was over 20 years ago now I don't recall.

Melvins were/are taper friendly and the Fox Theatre always was so my friend Tom and I ran a tall stand in the great sounding Fox and I think this came out really nice.  Enjoy.

Hank III & Assjack @ Fox Theatre, Boulder CO, 2001-05-07

This is from a run of shows that Hank III and Assjack did with the Melvins.  Hank III had shown up on the Melvins covers album Crybaby the year before so this wasn't as crazy of a pairing as it might have seemed.  He warns the crowd that if they came for the country music they are going to be disappointed.  He gives them a little taste with the first 3 songs and then it goes hard.

Maybe my favorite era of Assjack.  Kick ass band line up for these shows.  Hank III, Melvins, and the Fox were all taper friendly so we ran a tall stand for this one.  Sounds really nice I think.

I'm going to post the Melvins set from this night tomorrow.

Hayseed Dixie @ Fox Theatre, Boulder CO, 2002-06-21

Was looking for something new to post and remembered this show from back in 2002.  These guys recorded a bluegrass tribute to AC/DC on a lark in 2001 and it was so well done and fun that it garnered a lot of attention and they ended up touring behind it and recording a bunch of other albums over the years.

Right before this show at the Fox they had just played the Telluride Bluegrass Festival.  So they weren't just some jokey novelty act.  People took them seriously in that world. Well maybe until they heard them play their song "I'm Keeping Your Poop".

This was an "evening with" if I recall so no opener and the band played two sets.  I've melded it all into one but I think the set break was after TNT.

The Fox always sounded great and it was fun to revisit this show.  Enjoy.

Slift @ HQ, Denver CO, 2022-10-11

Slift is a band from France that gets labeled stoner rock and while they do slot into that category I think it leans way harder into prog rock then some of the more stripped down rock stuff that I think of when I hear that genre applied.

That makes sense since my Phish loving friend talked me into going to the show.  It was already on my radar and I like to try and catch bands that have come a long way to play in Denver.  I might never get another chance to see them.  Slift had a cool projected light show for their whole set.

I wasn't familiar with their material at all going into the show but I enjoyed it.  I think it turned out pretty nice.  Enjoy.

Seaweed @ Lion's Park, Cheyenne WY, 1992-05-09

This is a recording from the box of Lantz cassettes.  He recorded this back in 1992.  As far as I know this hasn't circulated much if at all.  I'm from Cheyenne and never saw anything cool like this while I lived there.  I've never seen very many recordings out of Wyoming or many live Seaweed recordings.  Figured I would get it posted up.

This had to have been one of their first times touring out side of Washington state.  How they ended up in Wyoming I don't know but they seem to be having a good time.  All the songs are from the Weak LP, Despised EP, and assorted early singles.  Sound quality isn't amazing but the  vocals are pretty clear and I've had a good time listening to it over and over while I figured out the set list.  It is what it is.  Enjoy.

Here is another almost 20 years old Zeke show.  This one was on New Years Eve at the Larimer Lounge.  Touring behind Death Alley but they play some new songs from 'Til The Livin' End.  Pretty long Zeke show for the era.  Cool to hear "10 To The Riverside Blues".  That is a rare live one.  Hell of a setlist all around.

Zeke @ Bluebird Theatre, Denver CO, 1999-07-14

Heard the news not too long ago that Zeke guitarist Abe “Sonny” Riggs III had passed away.  He was part of the line up from Flat Tracker up to Death Alley.  He is on the cover of Kicked In The Teeth.

I saw Zeke a ton of times.  They came to Denver all the time.  I was thinking about it and I've seen Zeke at 7 different venues in Denver over the years.  Headlining, opening for other bands, Motorhead one time.  Total road dogs back in the 90s and 00s.

I have a couple other Zeke shows posted but neither have Sonny in the line up.  This show was at the Bluebird in Denver back in July of 1999.  Still on tour for Kicked In The Teeth but they play a bunch of Dirty Sanchez songs.

Lots of classic Marky and Donny shit talking.  Super fun show.

Eddie Spaghetti & The Railbenders @ Herman's Hideaway, Denver CO, 2005-01-21

Back in the early aughts Eddie Spaghetti from the Supersuckers had gotten friendly with the Denver band The Railbenders after they opened up a show for them at Tulagis in Boulder.  After that Eddie guested on a song on a Railbenders album and then came out a few times for some combo shows where The Railbenders were his back up band.

This was the 1st of those shows at Herman's Hideaway.  Eddie came back again in 2006 and played a similar show at Benders Tavern.  I have recordings of both but I think this one is superior so I decided to post this one up.

I think it would be safe to say this was a extravaganza.  Just look at that 50+ song setlist.  First Eddie came out an played some songs solo. Then he was joined by the Railbenders along with some Denver heavyweights Marty Jones on harmonica and Glenn Taylor on pedal steel.  At the end of Eddie's set there was a short break and the Railbenders played a set of their own songs before bringing Eddie back out to close out the show.  Almost 3 hours and 20 minutes of entertainment.

Things get a little bit fast and loose towards the end but Eddie saves the day with a 3 songs drug meddle with Non-Addictive Marijuana, I Want The Drugs, and Must Have Been High.

Crowd is pretty rowdy but I had the mics mounted up pretty high on a pole in front of the stage so it's not to chatty and I think it sounds pretty nice.  Enjoy.

Here is another recent show.  EYEHATEGOD at HQ last week.  EHG was going to play this room when it was called 3 Kings in April of 2019 but it was cancelled like everything else.

I caught an fantastic EHG set at Psycho Vegas this summer.  Extra long due to Elder getting rained out at the pool stage.  Was excited to be able to catch them again this year on my home turf.  They did not disappoint.  Get setlist and Mike banter.  Sounds pretty good too.  Enjoy

STÖNER @ HQ, Denver, CO, 2022-09-17

When I heard about Brant and Nick getting together to form a new band I was immediately interested in checking it out.  They first thing I heard was a live album that the band sort of distanced themselves from and I liked it but it didn't grab me like I was hoping.   I've enjoyed the two studio albums  that they have put out as well but I knew that this was just one of those bands you need to see live to fully get it.

I've been a fan of Brant and Nick's work since the early 90s.  I saw Kyuss back in 93.  This stuff hit's just right in a live setting and I'm glad I got to finally see them.  With this being kinda of a side project to all the other stuff these guys got going on you never know if they will keep this active.

Nice mix of songs from the 2 official albums and some cool covers.  Enjoy.

Belzebong @ Hi Dive, Denver CO, 2022-08-31

Denver is at a cross roads of 2 big interstates and is a long way from the next big concert markets.  So bands plotting tours out west almost always come to Denver.  Often there will be 2 or more great shows happening the same night.  The night of this Elder / Belzebong / Dreadnaught show at Hi Dive.  Spiritworld, 200 Stab Wounds, and Creeping Death was playing across the street at HQ.  Which I caught some of and recorded all of too.

One of my guidelines for which band to go see on nights like this is how far the band had to travel to get here.  If they have come from out of the county I almost always pick that band(s).  Underground metal bands have an uphill battle as it is but these days even getting into the US is difficult.  Many bands that were supposed to play Psycho Vegas this year who thought they had visas in hand were deigned entry into the county.

Belzebong is from Poland so they got bumped up to a must see.  No idea where I might ever get another chance to see them again.  Plus I love the heavy stoner doom they play.  They did not disappoint either.

Support underground venues and bands anyway you can if you love this stuff.

Hats off the the FOH crew at the Hi Dive for always killing it.  I think it consistently sounds amazing in that room.  It's my favorite for heavy music in Denver.   I think this recording sounds really nice for those reasons.  Enjoy.

Joe Bonamassa @ Bluebird Theater, Denver CO, 2007-01-27

I've enjoyed a lot of blues music over the years.  But I would consider myself a blues tourist for the most part.  I like to visit but I don't want to live there year round.  Which is how I found myself at Joe Bonamassa back in 2007.  I had never heard of him but my friend Twister talked me into coming out.

Not knowing how popular he was the show sold out and since my friend was already inside I paid a scalpers price and got in.  Joe was taper friendly at the time so we flew our mics on a tall stand right in front of the FOH area.  Sounds really great I think.  He gets really quite a few times during his set and the crowd was so into it there is minimal chatter.

I'm not sure why I have never posted this up until now.  I took a look in the archive and had started to track it out back in February of 2007 and just gave up.  Sites like Setlist.fm make it so much easier to figure out what was played these days.  Also the tourist thing.  I was more interested in posting stuff that I was really into.

Joe has moved on to much bigger venues since 2007.  I would be surprised if he ever plays a venue as intimate as the Bluebird again.  He does a lot of covers in the set.  I'm not familiar enough with his catalog to know how his song selection rates to a fan.  Like I said this sounds really nice so please enjoy.

Early Moods @ HQ, Denver CO, 2022-03-18

Early Moods formed in 2015 and plays a pretty straight ahead traditional doom metal.  Reminds me of Candlemass & Trouble for sure.  They have really started getting some attention this year and have a new self titled album out on Riding Easy.  They are up on bandcamp as well.  Go support these guys and lots of other fantastic artists on there.  I like them so much they are one of 2 bands that I caught twice at Psycho Vegas this year.

This show happened back in March of this year.  I sat on it for awhile since they played so many new songs.
